Admission Criteria for UW Internal Medicine Residency

In order to have a complete application and be considered for interview, please submit your application through ERAS and include:

1. Current curriculum vitae 2. Personal statement 3. Medical School transcript 4. Dean’s letter 5. Letters of recommendation: a minimum of two from internists who clinically supervised your work. We are accepting applications for the Internal Medicine Residency only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please contact your medical school for assistance with filing this electronic application. The Internal Medicine Residency Program has the following application criteria:

* Minimum scores of 210 on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (if you failed Step 1 or Step 2 more than once, your application will not be considered) OR Minimum four months of recent hands-on United States clinical experience. For U.S. medical students, clinical rotations during medical school meet this requirement. The following visa information is provided in compliance with NRMP requirements.

PERMANENT RESIDENT VISA - Permanent residents can remain in the United States indefinitely. MCWAH does not provide sponsorship to individuals who are pursuing Permanent Resident visas.

VISITOR EXCHANGE VISA (J-1) - To be appropriate for GME, this visa must be sponsored by ECFMG. International Medical Graduates who have participated in the Exchange Visitor Program as a researcher during the twelve-month period preceding the proposed commencement of a program of graduate medical education are ineligible for sponsorship. It is very difficult to convert J-1 sponsorship from a school to ECFMG. ECFMG will not sponsor an individual for longer than seven years. J visa holders are not permitted to moonlight. Please contact the ECFMG for further information on J-1 visas.

TEMPORARY PROFESSIONAL WORKERS (H-1B) – The MCW Department of Medicine and Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals sponsor H-1B visas for highly qualified applicants. Those seeking H-1B status for GME must have passed all three steps of USMLE. The total amount of continuous time permitted in H-1B classification is 6 years; no extensions are permitted. MCWAH will not pursue an H-1B visa for an applicant unless he/she has already passed USMLE Step 3 and the Clinical Skills Assessment.

University of Washington Program

Criteria for International Medical Graduates

University of Washington Medicine Residency Program will accept applications from International Medical Graduates only if they meet the following criteria:

* The applicant must be a permanent resident of one of these states: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, or Idaho.

Or

* The applicant must be sponsored by a faculty member of the University of Washington School of Medicine who has a personal or professional relationship with the applicant. The sponsoring faculty member must write a letter to the Medicine Residency Program Director, describing the relationship with the applicant (for example, common ties with the applicant’s school, serving as clinical or research supervisor during electives at the University of Washington, etc.) and some information about the applicant’s academic background and qualifications. This letter must be submitted electronically via the ERAS Post Office.

* The applicant must apply through the ECFMG ERAS program.

And

* Documentation of successful completion of an Internal Medicine clinical clerkship and/or subinternship of at least eight weeks’ duration at an ACGME accredited U.S., Puerto Rican, or Canadian medical school. o This training must have involved direct patient care responsibilities. Observer status or consultation rotations do not meet this requirement. A letter of recommendation from the supervising physician for this training must accompany your application. It must include the date, location, and type of clerkship or subinternship experience. This letter must be submitted electronically via the ERAS post office. o The University of Washington Medicine Residency Program cannot arrange for these experiences at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

o These clinical experiences must have been completed by November 30, 2006.

Or * Documentation of successful completion of at least four months of residency training in Internal Medicine at an ACGME accredited U.S., Puerto Rican, or Canadian program. o This training must have involved direct patient care responsibilities. INFORMATION FOR ALL MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATESAll application materials for the residency programs at Virginia Mason Medical Center MUST be forwarded to us through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). No faxed or paper copies will be considered for PGY-1 positions.

All applicants must be candidates for an MD or DO degree from an approved school of medicine or college of osteopathy upon application.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is REQUIRED prior to the start of our resident training programs. Make sure you sign up for an ACLS certification course during your 4th year. Check with your Dean’s office regarding ACLS training information.

Only graduates from medical schools that are recognized by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners are eligible. To be considered for a position in our program, IMG applicants must have successfully completed USMLE™ Steps 1 & 2, the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA®), and the Test of English as a Foreign Language™ (TOEFL®) by the 31st of Jan in order for the ECFMG status report to be updated prior to the NRMP Rank Order List deadline in February. Matched residents requiring ECFMG certification need to be certified by 30 April prior to beginning our program.** For applicants with Foreign Visas, only J1 visas are offered by UTHSCSA programs. **

photosCompetitive applicants will be invited for an interview at the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen, TX. Interviews are held during the months of November, December, and January. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their application, transcript, USLME scores, letters of recommendation (including your dean's letter), and interviews.

The following are requirements for application to our program:

1. Candidates must have clinical experience in the United States. 2. A minimum of 2 letters of recommendation must be from physicians practicing in the United States. These letters must be from physicians who have worked with the applicant in the clinic setting. 3. ** Candidates with multiple fails on the USMLE or COMLEX tests will not be considered. ** 4. Candidates must have passing scores posted in ERAS for both steps one and two of the USMLE or COMPLEX tests by 30 January. 5. Beginning 1 July 2003, all UTHSCSA programs are required to perform Security Background Checks (SBC) on all applicants for Graduate Medical Education (GME) positions. All applicants will need to complete, sign, and submit the SBC form prior to being offered a GME position. Refusal to do so will remove a candidate from consideration for any UTHSCSA GME programs, including the RAHC IM residency. Background checks are performed by University Police, and information gathered will be regarded as confidential and will not be made a part of the applicant's file and will be destroyed after 180 days. Convictions within the last 10 years may effect employability, and will be reviewed on a case by case basis by the Associate Dean for GME. This policy does not automatically disqualify all individuals with conviction records.

Interview Selection:

To expedite the selection process, we evaluate each application prior to extending an invitation to interview. A formal interview is required to be considered for the program.

A complete application and all supporting data must be mailed to ERAS so that a complete application can be evaluated by the Residency Selection Committee. The committee will not review incomplete applications.

When applications are reviewed, candidates will be notified by e-mail of the Committee's decision. Extension of interview offers will begin in the last week of October.

Our Internal Medicine Residency, Combined FM/IM Residency and Geriatric/Internal Medicine Residency Programs will join obstetrics and gynecology, family practice, emergency medicine, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and transitional year programs in receiving residency applications over the Internet using ERAS - the Electronic Residency Application Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
