Living with Roommates Moving into residence is an exciting time for everyone and there are many people from different backgrounds to meet. The most important person you are going to meet will probably be your roommate(s). In most cases you will not have met your roommate(s) before move in day and will probably have a lot of questions about who they are, what they are about and how they spend their time. Keep in mind that communication is the key to any relationship and it is no different with your roommate. Communication is an ongoing process and not discussing those “small” things will eventually catch up to you. There is a list of suggested things to discuss on the residence website at www.cambriancollege.ca/residence. You should schedule a time during your first week to discuss the topics and come to a decision about how to live together, there is a “Roommate Contract” that can be found on the residence website that can be used as a guide to get to know each other and decide how you would like to live together over the next year. Make sure to have honest conversations with your roommate(s) throughout the year to ensure everyone is still happy with the living arrangements. THINGS TO REMEMBER

• Keep the communication lines open • Be honest about how you feel and what you are thinking • Be willing to compromise • Give your roommate the respect, consideration and understanding you want in return • Discuss problems as they arise with your roommate, not with other residents • If things change, be sure to let your roommate know. It is normal for your ideas, feelings or even habits

to change. • Ask your RA for help if you need it…that is what they are there for!

Roommate Conflict Try as you might, even the best of roommates sometimes run into challenges. During the year you may have trouble understanding your roommate(s) and why they do certain things. This is normal and you are not alone. Your Resident Advisors are there to help you get through any challenges that may come up. The Residents Advisor will first suggest that you have an honest conversation with your roommate(s) however if that does not help the situation the Resident Advisor will assist you through the rest of the process which will include discussing the situation with all roommate(s). There are also resources on the residence website at www.cambriancollege.ca/residence that can help you talk to your roommate about the conflict. Room Change The regular roommate conflict process includes a mediation between roommates by the Resident Advisor. If that process is not successful, the conflict will be referred to the Residence Life Coordinator. If the conflict cannot be resolved, then there is a possibility that a room change will occur. There is a form that the resident requesting to move rooms must fill out and bring to the Residence Life Coordinator. Depending on the situation there may be an administrative fee associated with a room change. Please note that there will be no room changes prior to September 25th, 2017. Decorating Your Suite

• The only acceptable form of fasteners that are allowed are white sticky pads called Magic Mounts or white sticky tac.

• You may not decorate any window in your suite or townhouse except for special occasions approved by management.

• You may not decorate the outside of your entrance door except for special occasions approved by management.

• Decorations should be fire-retardant or flame-proof. • Strings of indoor lights should not be in direct contact with any flammable materials and should not be

left on while a room is unattended. • Artificial snow is not permitted in the residence. • Residence Management may require that decorations be removed if they are deemed inappropriate,

excessive, or a fire hazard. Healthy Living

Page 8: Residence Handbook - Cambrian Cover 2017-2018

It is important to us that while at residence you are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle so here are some strategies to help you, and other residents, stay healthy:

• Keep up to date on your immunizations • Wash your hands frequently • Don’t share drinks or cigarettes • Limit your contact with others when you are ill • Get plenty of rest • Eat a balanced diet • Live a balanced life • Maintain a clean suite

WILD ANIMALS Due to our location there may be the possibility of coming into contact with wild animals. If a sighting of any animal that is of concern is reported, informational posters will be displayed in all Residences. Please report all wild animal sightings that create concern to the Residence Service Desk at 705-566-8101 x7583 and/or Campus Security at x7911. Residence Security The Residence offers great security from the moment you pass through the main entrance, until you unlock your suite door to let yourself in. We believe the safety and security of our students and staff is paramount and have staff on duty 24 hours a day. To that end, we require that all visitors in the building be registered prior to entry and provide a valid piece of photo-identification. All expectations put in place by the Residence Management and the college are for your safety and protection. We expect you to lock your room and suite/townhouse door at all times and do not leave your valuables unattended as neither the residence or the college are responsible for missing items. As a resident you are responsible for any damages and/or RCLS infractions that occur as a result of leaving doors and windows in your suite/townhouse unlocked. If you have any safety concerns throughout the year please contact the Residence Service Desk at ext. 7583 for immediate assistance or schedule an appointment with the Residence Life Office to discuss your concerns. Do not leave your suite/house door open at anytime. This would include having your door “propped open”. Why can’t you leave your door open or propped open ? Each suite/townhouse is equipped with a fire rated door that allows for a barrier if a fire was to happen in Residence. The suite/townhouse door must be kept closed in order to allow for this barrier to work. Staff will remind residents to close their suite/townhouse door while doing their rounds or close any unlocked door as required. Lock your suite/townhouse doors at all times and do not leave your valuables unattended. You must have a valid room access key to enter any of the corridors and your key will only grant you access to your own room and the common areas. SUPPORTING YOUR SUCCESS – PERSONALLY & ACADEMICALLY Moving into residence is an exciting time, but it can also be difficult. Our residence life program offers you many different resources and services to help you be successful. Go to our website, www.cambriancollege.ca/residence, to learn more about these programs. E-Chug The Alcohol e-CheckUpToGo is an interactive web survey that allows college and university students to enter information about their drinking patterns and receive feedback about their use of alcohol. The assessment takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, is self-guided, and requires no face-to-face contact time with a counselor or administrator. E-Toke

Page 9: Residence Handbook - Cambrian Cover 2017-2018

The Marijuana e-CheckUpToGo is a marijuana-specific brief assessment and feedback tool designed to reduce marijuana use among college students. The assessment takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, is self-guided, and requires no face-to-face contact time with a counselor or administrator. iCopeU Stressed out? Anxious? Feeling down? Or, simply curious to learn more about how to effectively cope with the challenges of student life? This interactive website has games, videos, and multiple resources that will help you cope with some of the things that you may find challenging or stressful while living in residence.

Emergency Fire Procedures & Lockdown Procedures DORM BUILDING If there is a fire in your suite:

• Advise all suite occupants to leave • Close all doors behind you • Pull closest fire alarm • Use nearest stairwell to get to Residence Service desk to inform the Residence Staff of the situation

If you hear the fire alarm If there is no smoke, leave the building using the nearest stairwell exit, you are not allowed to use the elevator. Ensure you close your suite door when you leave. Once you have left the building you are required to gather with your floor at Lot 10. If due to smoke or heat you must remain in your suite, protect yourself from the smoke by staying low. Stay in your suite until you are rescued or you are told you are able to leave. This may take time. To keep smoke from entering your suite, use wet towels at the bottom of your door and attempt to cover air vents. If smoke enters your suite call the fire department and tell them where you are located. If there is no smoke coming in from outside, open a window for fresh air and hang a sheet from the window to show rescuers where you are located. Do not return into your house until it is declared safe to do so by a fire official. TOWNHOUSES If there is a fire in your townhouse:

• Pull the fire alarm located in your townhouse • Advise all townhouse occupants to leave • Close the door behind you when you leave • Wait outside your house for a Residence Staff member to meet you and inform them of the situation • Wait for further instruction from the Residence Staff member

If you hear the fire alarm You must leave your townhouse. Gather with your housemates in the courtyard and wait for further instruction from the Residence Staff. Do not return into your house until it is declared safe to do by a fire official. Lockdown Procedures In some emergency situations, such as ones involving firearms, evacuation may not be a safe response alternative. In these cases, sheltering in place or “lockdown” may be the preferred option for preserving life. The Evacuation Wardens, Security personnel and/or Residence Staff may advise you to “lockdown” and to take shelter. If lockdown becomes necessary:

• Remain at your current location • Stay away from windows • Close blinds and doors. Lock doors, if possible

Page 10: Residence Handbook - Cambrian Cover 2017-2018

• Take cover, crouch, or sit on the floor • Wait for an all-clear signal from Residence Staff, Security personnel, and/or Emergency Services
