Abstract Menopause is generally defined as cessation of periods for 12 months or as time of

cessation of ovarian function resulting in permanent amenorrhoea. Menopause normally

occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years; the average being 47 years. Menopause is thus a gradual and natural transitional phase of adjustment between the active and

inactive ovarian function and occupies several years of a women’s life and involves

biological and psychological changes adjustment. During reproductive years, women is

protected by female hormones, i.e. estrogen and progesterone. With menopause, women

enter an estrogen deficient phase in their lives, which accelerates the ageing process resulting into greater vulnerability to psychosomatic problems. Hot flushes, sweating,

change in mood and libido is some of the important outcomes affecting the quality of life

(QoL) in menopausal women. QoL covers physical, functional, emotional, social, and cognitive variables in up to 85% of menopausal women. Long term use of hormone is

associated with increased risks for venous thromboembolism, coronary events, stroke and breast cancer

. In classical unani text, though menopausal transition is not mentioned as

such but its clinical features can be correlated with complications occurring due to

Ehtebase haiz (Amenorrhoea) and documented many drugs which are in use to relieve the signs and symptoms related to menopausal syndrome such as Soya, Asgandh, Alsi,

Branjasif etc. This review paper focuses on herbal preparations which are useful in menopausal syndrome.

Documentation in Ayurvedic Clinical Practice: Present

Scenario

Smita Arora* Ch. Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan, Khera Dabar,

New Delhi-110073(Govt. of NCT Delhi), India

Abstract Ayurveda is a science which is practiced since centuries. It is not only limited to

Ayurvedic hospitals/clinics and pharmacies on a small/large scales. In spite of this

long-term use, there are several issues in Ayurveda which cause some concerns

globally as well as locally in India, regarding its usefulness and safety. One of the

reasons for this in spite of its long-term use is lack of systematic documentation and

scientific publication. Many a times, Ayurveda physicians get a great success in

treating some chronic disease but these cases go unnoticed and undocumented, thus

limiting the benefit only to a few people. There are a few isolated efforts which are

started but many a times a proper format is not followed which makes it difficult to

retrieve data or analyze it completely. This paper discusses in brief the importance of

documentation and its need in Ayurveda in the present scenario.

Ayurvedic Herbs in the Management of Geriatric

Problems: A Review

Sarvesh Kumar Singh1*, Kshipra Rajoria

1National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, India

2M.J.F. Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Abstract Geriatric problems are of much concern for medical professionals in the present day scenario. More toxic and adverse effect of allopathic medicines is reported in common

problems of old age due to altered metabolic activities in old age. Ayurvedic herbs are

better in the management of geriatric problems. These herbs are classified in classical Ayurvedic texts as Rasayana. The Rasayana is a specialized type of treatment that leads

to an overall improvement in the formation and maintenance of the living tissues and

helps in the prevention of ageing, improving of resistance against diseases, bodily strength and process of improving mental faculties. A lot of clinical and experimental

work is done to investigate these properties of Ayurvedic herbs. This shows that these herbs have the properties to slow down the natural process of ageing and can

successfully manage the common geriatrics problems.

Evaluation of Bioactive Compounds and Antibacterial

Effect of Xanthium Indicum

Antony S*, Sunitha Kumari K Malankara Catholic College, Mariagiri, Kaliakkavilai, Kanya Kumari District, Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract Xanthium indicum L. is a common herbaceous weed found in India. One gram of the

plant leaf was taken and different biochemical constituents, viz., moisture content, total

carbohydrates, chlorophyll, free fatty acid, glucose, total lipid, protein, amino acid, calcium ascorbic acid and total alkaloid were estimated. The results indicated that

significantly low levels of moisture content, total carbohydrates, chlorophyll and free

fatty acid were present in the plant material. At the same time, high level of calcium (205 mg/100 g) and ascorbic acid (484 mg/100 g) was given in the present study. The

antimicrobial activity of X. indicum extracts exhibited low antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC741) whereas moderate antibacterial activity against

Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC740) and Escherichia coli (MTCC443) and significantly

high antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia (MTCC 109). Further research work is needed for the alternate medicinal drug preparation.

Dyslipidemia Cause or Consequence of Diabetes:

Reanalyzing the Pathogenesis with the

Vision of Ayurveda

Divya Kajaria *, Chandola H.M. Ch. Brahm Prakash Ayurveda Charaka Samsthana, New Delhi, India

Abstract Treatment aims at disrupting the pathogenesis and therefore accurate knowledge of

pathogenesis is sine qua non for conquering the disease. Searching successful remedy with erroneous lead in the pathogenesis is like shooting an arrow in the dark. Diabetes is

presently the most threatening disease, noosing the human being because of lacuna in proper knowledge of pathogenesis. Though researches have opened the hidden mystery of

pathogenesis even at the level of genes and now it is possible to track even the molecular

signaling but the ultimate results remain unchanged, i.e., the disease is still incurable. Are we hunting truth in right direction? Sometimes the hope of future light may come

from the beams of the past. In the present paper, the authors have discussed the

pathogenesis of diabetes according to both Ayurvedic and modern view and have tried to mark out the difference between their approaches and its consequences.
