Conventions of Trailers

From what I have researched I know the general conventions of trailers such as the release data of the film and the basic overview of the characters. All of these conventions will make a successful trailer.

• A majority of trailers include a general overview of the characters but in some cases they purposely try and hide the identity of the characters to make the film more intriguing.

• Sound effects are used to make the trailer more dramatic and can sync with the music to give a bigger effects.

• Camera angles are used to give characters social priority over other, no matter the genre there will always be a dominant figure which will usually be accompanied by a low angle. This gives the effect that the character is dominant over the rest.

• Release dates are always included within the end of the trailer to notify to the user when the movie will be released.

Convention of a Teen Comedy

Following the conventions of a successful Teen Comedy will make my own trailer more popular. This will help me when I comes to choose the characters for my trailer and the main story line.

• Most teen comedy trailers Introduce the characters at the start the trailer, I wish to use this in my own trailer as it gives the audience an insight of the movie and shows off the best bits of the characters.

• From what I have researched the setting of most teen comedy are located at American high schools, as I do not have access to a school in America I will use my own school as the main setting.

• I need to take advantage of high and low camera angles so I can show to the audience which characters are dominant within the scene.

• The music needs to appeal to the target audience which are teenagers, this means that the music shall be up beat and relate to the most popular genre.

What I need to include to make a successful trailer

I need to follow the conventions of both general and teen comedy conventions so I can get the most out of teen comedy trailer.

• Camera angles are a main factor within a trailer, teen comedies focuses on the high and low angles to show the social status of he characters. As teen comedy films usually have popular and unpopular kids the camera angles emphases the status to the audience.

• Music that is popular to teenagers at the time of making of trailer will make the trailer more appealing to my target audience. A lot of people refer to the music of the trailer and can really boost the popularity of the film.

• Props such as the pie in American Pie• Certain editing features need to be added such as colour collection, this makes the colours more

saturated and gives a professional look.

Target Audience – Teen Comedy

I have assessed the target audience for my trailer by using questionnaires and social networking sites.

The survey gave me a lot of results which helped me a lot with choosing my audience, I could find out the things that people like about teen comedies such as the destination and characters of the film.

The results for the survey are on the next two slides.

Here is a Wallwisher post that asks my audience “Things you would like you see in a Teen Comedy trailer”.

A lot of people asked for good looking girls within teen comedy films and music that appealed to them. The main setting for a Teen comedy film was in a high school which you will see in most successful films.

Target Audience – Teen Comedy

The results that I got from my survey tell me what I need to include within my trailer. I asked the age of my audience as I wanted to know what type of music and clothes attract to a 16 – 19 year old audience.

• Gender was a main factor when choosing colours and the type of humour included within the trailer, a majority of the questionnaire were male, this means that I need to cater for the male audience by adding in male colours and humour that attracts to a male audience.

• 100% of my audience said that the music and audio effects the viewing experience, this therefore suggests I need to think about the type of music and sound effects that are in my trailer.

• Fast paced editing was a feature that many people liked, I will try and add it in when needed but because of my genre its not really needed.

• I askes my audience which was there favourite genre of film, the genre that had the most votes was Teen Comedy.

• From the evidence I received fro my questionnaire the trailer should be between 1 – 2 minuets long, this means that I need to think about the time of each shot so it Is not to long.

Conventions of Ancillary Product

I have analysed multiple ancillary products such as the Super Bad and Means Girls posters.

The typical conventions that I looked at where introducing the characters on the main poster, this is done by enlarging the main character so you know they are the main focus of the film, for example the super bad poster has a picture of the three characters on it so the audience know they are the main characters.

Conventions I need to use

• Using stylized typography that relates to the film• Have the main character on the main cover• Use quotes from people that have reviewed you trailer.• Use a relevant colour scheme that matches the genre
