Audience Research

In our audience research we found that the favorite genre of music was R&B, this was expected by us because this genre of music dominates the charts and the charts are often considered to be made up of a predominantly younger market. We also found that most people prefer slow songs and like the videos to be slow as well, this makes sense because the favorite artist was Mariah Carey who is well known for her slow love song and accompanying videos.

Target Audience• In general our product is targeted towards both male and females

between the ages of 14 – 34 with a general interest in R&B and Soul music. This is because this is the average age group of people who are interested in this genre of music, as we found in our research.

• Due to the fact that teenagers and young adults are our main target audience, it is vital that we advertise our product in media sources that the audience will most likely see it in, things that they will buy such as celebrity gossip magazines and other youth based magazines and publications.

• It makes most sense to distribute the video on music channels such as MTV and VH1, which are hugely popular with the younger generation. The video would also receive a lot of promotion on video streaming websites such as You Tube and Vevo because these types of websites have become very popular in recent years.

Music Video Analysis:We Belong Together

By Mariah Carey

We Belong Together is a R&B ballad by Mariah Carey. The video features a lot of features we would expect from a love song video such as slow paced editing and slowed down motion to give it a dramatic and emotional effect.

These two shots are typical of an R&B video as they feature the performer in provocative positions wearing a lack of clothing to give across a sexy and sultry tone. As she appears to be wrapped up in sheets in one shot and sat in front of a head board in the other, they are both features of a bed, which itself has connotations of sex and love.

we chose to look at this shot because it is very unusual as we see the back of Mariah however we see the front of her through the mirror as she sings the song. We thought this was a nice and artistic shot that seemed to give off a lot of emotions although it is relatively simple to do.

These close ups are common of an R&B love song video as they give off a lot of facial emotion and establish who the star of the video is.

Music Video Analysis:Say Somethin’

By Mariah Carey

Say Somethin’ is a mid tempo Hip-Hop orientated song, we chose this because it is interesting what characteristics come into place when the genre is changed but is still the same artist.

In the video there is an aspect of trying to gain ‘street cred’ by using nicknames and featuring appearances from guest artists that maybe seen as hip and popular. In this case Snoop Dogg is used, as well as an appearance from Andre’ Leon Talley who is a prominent figure in the fashion industry, thus prompts the idea that Mariah may be trying to reach out to audiences in all different areas of media.

This video also emphasizes on aspects of celebrity lifestyles by featuring expensive brands of clothing such as Louis Vuitton. There are also shots of Mariah being chased round by paparazzi in an expensive Maserati (car) and on a shopping spree in an expensive looking store. This offers a sense of escapism for the audience by letting them have a ‘day in the life ‘ of a superstar.

Just like the We Belong Together video, there is a sexy atmosphere put across in this video, by Mariah wearing a lack of clothing and lying in various enticing positions.

Music Video Analysis:It’s Like That

By Mariah Carey

This is an up tempo track by Mariah Carey. The video is a lot more fast paced than the others in terms of editing, cinematography and of course, sound. It is interesting to see which things are different compared to the other videos, now that the song is faster and less emotional.

This low angle shot and close up establish Mariah as the prominent figure in the video and makes her look superior to all the other people featured on the screen.

This close up of Mariah's mid-section adds to the sexy tone because of her movement and lack of clothing, just like the other videos.

This shot shows how all the people appear to be having a good, fun time which is a contrast to the We Belong Together video in which everyone appears to be upset and emotional. This may be because the song is a more upbeat one played at party's where people want to have fun.

Unlike the other two videos this one has choreographed dance routines which compliment the beat of the music. This adds to the fun upbeat tone of the song to make the viewer have a fun time.

This video also has things in common with the other two, for example, it features a love interest, which add a touch of emotion to the otherwise emotionless video.
