STOP MOTION ANIMATION

Page 2: Research Presentation

Stop Frame is a type of animation that mainly includes an imaging device taking a picture of a frame (shot) of movement. It is making a physical object seem as if it is moving on its own with out anyone moving it. This type of animation is made up of multiple different frames that vary in speed, genre and theme.

Frame rate is the amount of singular shots, know as frames, in that second. The abbreviation of this is known as Frames Per Second (FPS). The frame rate has a large impact on the overall turnout of the animation, especially on the fluency and smoothness of it. This is because the more frames you have in each second the more small movements there are, the less you have the more jumpy it is going to look, the more you have the smoother it’s going to look. As well as affecting quality, the frame rate can also influence on the animation speed, the more or less frames you have, the faster or slower the animation looks and/or feels.

PERSISTENCE OF VISION

What is it?Persistence of vision is the phenomenon of the eye by which an afterimage is thought to persist for approximately one twenty-fifth of a second on the retina. It’s a relationship between the brain and the eye to make us believe that an object is moving by itself when it isn’t.

Two examples of effectiveness:

More than 10 images per second: Image appears to move24 images per second: Image seems to be smoother and flow frequently.

PINGU:The Pingu animation uses a slower rate of frames per second, however it doesn’t result in a lack of smooth quality. The animation is original and that’s what most people like about it, its simplicity, originality and the story line. You don’t know what the characters are saying as there is no dialog, but you can still work out what is going on and what they are saying even though it isn't evidently shown.

PIONEERS

William Horner:William George Horner was a British Mathematician that ended up being the inventor of the modern Zoetrope, it was officially created in 1834 in England, and was renamed by him to; ‘Daedalum’ as the original model was made in China around 180 AD by Ting Huan.ZOETROPE:The Zoetrope is one of several animation toys which were invented in the 19th century, as people experimented with ways to make moving pictures. The modern meaning of this is called ‘The Wheel Of Life’

PIONEERS

Edward Muybridge:Formally known as ‘Eadweard James Muybridge’ was an English photographer and was known for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion and in motion-

picture projection.

DEVELOPERS OF ANIMATION

What Are They?

There are multiple materials people use when making a stop animation, however there are some which are used more frequently than others.

Some of the most popular stop motion animations, such as Wallace and Gromit, use the same types of materials for one reason or another, one of the main resources is molding clay.

STOP MOTION MATERIALS

The advantages of using clay:• Easy to mold into different shapes

and positions.• More precise movements for what

you want.• Can be more appealing to the

audience.
