Research into similar products!Overview:

For my research I have viewed videos in the indie/rock genre and used my findings from these videos to help me plan my indie/rock music video. I have looked at the basic video conventions and the most used narrative and technical conventions and took my findings into consideration when planning my video. For example many indie/rock videos use colour schemes like red, black and white because these colours represent the genre. Also basic video conventions used are scenes of the band performing the video in between other clips.

Camerawork! In many indie/rock videos basic camerawork is used to help show the audience what genre the music video is. High angle, low angle, close-up, mid shot and establishing shots are used to help represent the genre of music in the video. Close ups are used on the instruments to show the audience that these instruments are being used in the video which helps represent the genre of music. High angles and low angles are used to show dominance and vulnerability in the video, which may relate to the music in the video. An establishing shot or a master shot may be used to introduce the band or the setting which may also relate to the music in the video. For example in the Foo Fighters – All My Life there are many close-ups of the band playing the instruments and of the band members.

Editing and Sound!EditingSlow paced and fast paced editing is used in music videos for the indie/rock genre to match the pace of the music and the beat, this makes the video better because it is in sync, because if there was a slow song with fast paced editing being used it wouldn’t look professionally good for example in the Foo Fighters – The Pretender music video the editing is fast paced in the chorus because the music is fast and upbeat so the images used match the beat. SoundThe sound used in indie/rock music videos is mainly non-diegetic because there is usually a storyline so the music isn’t heard by the characters in the video, but in many music videos there are clips of the band playing the song, this is when the music is diegetic because the band can here the music. For example in The Killers – Mr Brightside the band are featured playing the music in the video therefore the sound is diegetic. If there is a storyline in the video there is mainly ambience sound during the video and dialogue featured in the video.

Mise-en-scene!ColourThe colour scheme for many indie/rock music videos is red, black and white, but not all indie/rock videos feature this colour scheme. For example in the Foo Fighters – The Pretender the colours scheme is mainly black, red and white because of the clothing and the background colour.Costume and PropsThe costume worn by the band members usually relates to the genre of music they are in or it relates to the video in general, for example in Foo Fighters – All My Life the lead singer is wearing stereotypical indie clothing to show his genre. On the other hand in The Killers – Mr Brightside the band are wearing clothing which relates to the setting they are in which was 19th century clothing. The props used show the genre of the music video, guitars, drums and microphones are used to show the music video is for an indie/rock band.Lighting and SettingThe lighting used in some indie/rock videos is used to show the emotion in the video and therefore the song, in Nickelback – How you remind me, the lighting is dark in many parts because the mood of the song is dark and gloomy, but when the lead singer sees his old lover the lighting changes to bright to show he is happy. The setting usually relates to the song or it is simply a warehouse where the band are performing the song.
