RESEARCH ON WHY PARENTS ARE BEING DUMPED INTO

OLD AGE HOMES AND THEIR LIFE THERE

“Parents are a treasure that children should guard zealously. Putting them into old age homes must never be the first but

always the last option. Treat your parents as assets not liability. Let them feel wanted and not a burden..”

Problem statement

• Our research is basically a pure research. It is more on the emotional and social side. The problem here is that the parents are being abandoned by their own children and are dumped carelessly into old age homes.

Why are parents being dumped into old age homes (considering the ones who are dumped for reasons that are not as valid as they are projected to be)

Objectives of the study

1. Reminding the youngsters their moral responsibilities and duties towards their parents

2. Reminding them that aping the western culture has somehow degraded our Indian culture

3. To find out how many out of the total old people are actually abandoned

Hypothesis

• Assuming that most of the parents are dumped into old age homes because their

children are not willing to take their responsibilities

• The methods used were:

• Under interviewing we used personal unstructured interview

• Under observation method we used disguised (covert) observation

Questionnaire- general outline

• Sir/ madam may I know your name?• May I know your age (current)?• What was your age when you came here?• If I am not hurting your sentiments, can I know the reason

why you landed up here?• How do you find the atmosphere here? Is it homely and

friendly enough?

(Asking more number of questions would hurt their sentiments and they would feel that they are reliving their past wounds)

Note: our topic being more on the social and emotional grounds, we had to face many restrictions from the old age home authorities while talking to the old people as it could have revived their wounds

• The Mumbai Police and HelpAge India initiated a special helpline for senior citizens because “Most of them complain of physical abuse (hot oil burns, wax drops on skin, cigarette burns, etc.) and mental tortures for property,” says Arun Sonawane of HelpAge India. When everything else fails, the children resort to abandoning them

• The helpline registers almost 400 calls a week with more than 100 reporting abuse from families.

• “We admit 25 to 30 such cases to old age homes every month. At times, the elderly are dropped in front of the hospital and left for the worst,” informs Suhas Salvi, a social worker at KEM Hospital

Inferences derived from our observation

• In the modern world, old age homes have emerged as an unavoidable necessity

• Even Indians, who boast about their respect for elders, now consider them as a boon in disguise

• Though the elderly people have law on their side (Article 41 of the Indian Constitution obliges the Government to provide for the welfare of old people, section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, requires the off springs (daughter and son) to maintain their old parents and Section 20(3) of the Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act, 1956, makes it obligatory for a person to maintain his or her aged parents) no parent would like to drag their own children to court for the sake of maintenance.

• Most of them are dumped because they don’t want have any burden on their shoulders

• from our interaction with these elderly people it was evident that in some of the cases they were dumped by their own sons just to please their wives

• Also to avoid taking care of them (in case of handicaps and disease stricken people)

• Also, Senior citizens fail to adjust to the urban ways adopted by their kids, while children fail to comprehend their parents

touch to make them feel secure...just speak properly to entertain them…just ask if they are feeling hungry...just make them their bed ...just let them live in peace to make them feel like a king and a queen....

• Take them regularly to places where they would love to go

• Allow the ladies to take the charge of the kitchens once in a while

• They don’t need materialistic comforts, all they need is few soothing words

• Thus, our hypothesis is proved to be correct

• Relationships bring happiness and not the Physical facilities. The irony is that most of the time, we run for physical facilities without focusing on relationships
