Intertextuality

The way they have introduced the music video looks like it’s a movie which is similar to other videos that Lady Gaga had done (e.g. Paparazzi). Even though the font is different the colours hat are used and the way that the text is set out is very similar to text used for the film “Jackie Brown”.

BricolageLady Gaga gives a new meaning to the 1950’s housewife as she plays with it and changes it by putting poison into the syrup and killing everyone in the diner.

Referencing popular culture

Here Beyoncé is wearing glasses that are similar to the ones Lady Gaga was wearing in her other video (Paparazzi) which makes a reference to the well known character from Disney, Mickey Mouse.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé wear the costume that look similar to a super hero costume. This some what links them to characters such as Wonder woman. This also contrasts with the job of a super hero as they are killing people instead of saving them.

She also uses the brand wonder bread to reference a certain time period.

The truck that they use has the name ‘Pussy Wagon’ on it which is the same truck that the film Kill Bill used in one of the scenes.

HomageThe ending of the song could be interpreted as a homage of the film Thelma and Louise as they are on the run with the shadow of the helicopter that is behind them.
