Who inspects colleges to ensure quality?
From 1902 -1992 colleges were inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Schools (HMI)
From 1992-2001 this became the responsibility of inspectors appointed by the Further Education Funding Council.
The Learning and Skills Act 2000 gave the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) the responsibility for the inspection of colleges in the further education sector and required that such inspections be carried out jointly with the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI).
In April 2007 Ofsted merged with ALI to provide an inspection service which includes all post-16 government funded education - but not Higher Education Institutes and Universities which are inspected by the Quality Assurance Agency.
3. Common Inspection framework for further education According to the Education and Inspections Act 2006, the Common InspectionFra
mework for further education was devised by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Ofsted.
