The AMS Survey aims to provide a profile of the installed health capacity in Brazil, registering all health facilities in operation. All individual or collective health care services, including diagnosis and therapy, for profit or not for profit, private or public, with in patient and/or outpatient care, are surveyed. The data gathered through the AMS Survey is essential to know the state of the health sector in Brazil, enabling the identification of areas that lack certain services and the needs or opportunities for public and private investment, as well as support the assessment of official policies regarding installed capacity. Mammography availability increased across the country. This equipment had a national ratio of 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. Between 1999 and 2005, there is a tendency toward a better distribution of mammography equipment through out the national territory. The number of Brazilian regions without mammography equipment was 280 in 1999, dropping to 178 in 2005. In 2005, this equipment had a national ratio of 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, ranging from 0.9 in the North to 2.2 in the Southeast Region. Taking a look at the total of health establishments distributed by municipality, there was an increase of establishments in all regions. The number of hospitals surveyed by the AMS in 2005 was 7,155, a drop of 243 in this kind of establishments compared to the numbers obtained by the AMS 2002. Establishments with inpatient care in 2005, represent 9.3% of all health facilities. NOTE: The data between the 2 surveys was interpolated. The ratio of beds per 1,000 inhabitants in 2005 was 2.4. The AMS Survey aims to provide a profile of the installed health capacity in Brazil, registering all health facilities in operation.
