Transcript of Research music video - Goodwins Theory
By Sanaa El-Haouzi
In his theory, Goodwin feels that traditional narrative analysis doesn’t necessarily apply to pop videos as they approach narrative from a different angle to other Media texts such as novels and films.
The pop video uses the singer both as a narrator and as a character , For example Amy Winehouse’s –Black to Black and also Tear dry on their own
The singer often looks directly at the camera- this is an extension of performance and trying to involve the viewers at home with the performance
Structured differently to different media texts
The way they visualise the lyrics and organise them into one of three narratives
They follow:
Verse and chorus
Lots of repetition of the same image or shots
A visual link of sound to image, beat or lyric
They have a closure
This relates to the idea of having visual pleasure or entertainment while watching a music video. The visualisation of a song may go beyond its original meaning, sometimes it provides a image that encourages repeated viewing so it therefore promotes the music.
Goodwin states three types of relations between songs and videos:
1) illustration :
This is when the visual images support the lyrics of the song, For example, numbers in action music video
2) Amplifcation :
This is when the visual images support the lyrics of the song and add new layers of meaning
3) Disjuncture :
There is a little connection between what we see and the lyrics or the song, the images might contradict
Owl City have used illustrative ideas in
their videos before, for example in
‘Fireflies’ when Adam (The artist behind
Owl City, Adam Young) is singing and as
he says ‘fireflies’ the word fireflies comes
up on the screen to a little toy gadget.
In Kanye West’s music video
‘Homecoming’ he clearly shows his
home but the audience can work out
that the song is literally a
‘homecoming’ and it is him walking
around a city that he knows.
In Fat Boy Slims music video
‘Praise You’ there is no relation
from the video to the lyrics
