Genre - Rock Description of key elements Mise en scene – Costumes/Make up/Props Costumes – Usually the costumes used within rock music are quite dark usually the black, dark red, dark grey and dark purple are the most common colours used on the clothing within the rock genre. The clothing is usually leather or sometimes ripped to show the edginess of the music. They also tend to have a lot of piercings and tattoos. Make up – Within rock the make up is thick and dark heavily using eye shadow and eye liner to enhance their appearance so they stand out as males don’t usually wear make up. Their face is usually quite pale to bring out the eye make up more and to hide facial features to bring across a more mysterious look. Props – In rock music the most common prop is the instruments. They usually have outrageous guitars and guitar straps that are the main focus in the video as they are the things that attract our eyes. Also the drummer usually has the bands logo or name written on the base drum so you can recognise what band it is. They also usually have long hair to cover their face away this also adds to the mysterious looks of the band. History Rock music was originated from ‘Rock and Roll’ in the 1950’s America. In splits into sub genres like heavy metal, gothic, Indie-Rock, Pop-Rock, Punk, Comedy rock and soft rock. rock has based and stereotyped around the electric guitar which is usually used as part of a rock group with bass guitar and drums. Rock music was a favourite for the mods and the rockers in Britain in the 1960’s and also the hippies. In the 1970’s it was known as ‘Punk culture’ which was listened to groups of people recognized as ‘emos’ or ‘goths’ with this rock music was associated with social attitudes to race, sex and drug use.

Culture The culture related around rock is rebellious towards rules and society, they try to be not like the ordinary also tend to be quite alienated within their groups they wont venture outside it their social group. They tend to wear a lot of makeup and dark clothing this is to create a mysterious look and too hide facial features to make them look un-human. They also have jet black hair to go with the gothic and emo theme within the music. The culture also includes tattoos as this is rebellious and permanent thing on your body.

Audience The audience stereotyped with rock music is festival lovers as this is the place they can express themselves with others who share the same interests. They have they’re own way of dance which is called ‘Mosh pot’ its where groups of people run into each other and push each other around. The audience of rock music can also be stereotyped as ‘emos’ or ‘goths’ as it’s the dark instrumental based music that it featured within these groups.
