RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
Quantitative Data Analysis
Findings obtained from the questionnaire has evidently demonstrated that the
respondents are agree that role play helps to improve their pronunciation skill as
shown in table 1. Most of the students agree that they are interested to learn the
English Language, as indicated by the mean 3.20. This shows that most of them are
of the same opinion that they are interested to learn English but they do not know
what is the best way to help them to learn English especially in learning
pronunciation skill.

active English Languageclassroom.
From the mean score, it can be concluded that majority of the respondents agreed
that they have problems when speaking in English. This can be proven from the
mean 3.00 (SD= 0.740). They believe that the problems they faced hinders them to
have a conversation in English with their friends (mean=3.05, SD=0.718). From my
opinion, the first problem that students face when speak in English is the confidence
level when speak English is low. This might be due to the weakness in pronunciation
skill. Most students feel not confident when speak English because they do not know
whether the words they pronounced are correct or not. As a result, they are refuse to
speak English with their friends because they will feel shy when their pronunciation is
not correct.
On the other hand, most respondents excited to be involved in role play if there is
chance to do it (mean=3.07, SD=0.691). They want to be involved in role play
because they think that role play is the best medium to help them improving their
pronunciation. This is because, during role play, they pronounce the words and theyheard their friends also pronounce the words. So, they are learn to correct their
pronunciation indirectly without being subconscious by themselves. High mean score
in statement 5 clearly support this finding where most respondents like role plays in
English. This is evident from the mean 3.10 (SD=0.662). They are enjoying role plays
because role plays allow them to show their ability to speak in English even though
they know that their pronunciation skill of words is not good. So, they think by joining
role plays can help them to improve their pronunciation.
It is glad to see that almost respondents perceive that the role plays has helped to
boost their pronunciation skill (mean=3.37,SD=0.615). This can be proven when they
confess that they feel confident to speak in English during role plays
(mean=3.20,SD=0.664). This show that, pronunciation affects the confidence level of
students during speak in English. When they know their pronunciation of words is
correct, they are able to pronounce the words without being hesitate the

pronunciation is either correct or not. As a result, they feel confident to speak with
others.
It is also interesting to note that the respondents truly believe that role plays can
create an active English language classroom. This is shown by the highest mean
score that is 3.40 (SD=0.621). The students believe that role plays can create
English language classroom because it gives fun to them. In a role playing situation,
students get the opportunity to practice skills they might not use on a regular basis.
Skills such as debating, acting, reasoning and negotiating can be flexed in
hypothetical situations when they cannot normally be used in a classic classroom
situation. Students are also able to adapt to situations they might not normally find
themselves in, forcing the creativity of the students to be exerted.
Interpretation of the findings implies that the respondents thought that role plasy can
improve their pronunciation skill. They also believe that it can create an active
learning classroom .

Qualitative Data Analysis
Data obtained from interview sessions was also analysed qualitatively.
1) The usage of English language among students of IPG Kent.
From the interview with a lecturer and students, it can be seen that the
students of IPG Kent do not use English frequently in their daily life. Here are
some responses from lecturer and the students about the usage of English
language in IPG Kent :
Students dont use enough English probably because they dont see the
purpose of using English.(Lecturer)
I think that students in IPG Kent do not use English language very much. We
usually speak based on our racist. Like the Malays speak Malay, the Chinese
speak Chinese. If we use English, we mainly use Manglish.(Student)

According to the interviewees (lecturer and students), students do not use
English frequently because they do not see the purpose of using English.
They prefer to use their mother tongue in their conversation. In my opinion,
this situation causes students to be weak in pronunciation skill in English
language. This is because, they are rarely use the language. When they rarely
use the language, they cannot get used their tongues to pronounce the
words. As a consequence, they are weak in pronouncing the words.
2) Do students of IPG Kent can pronounce English words correctly ?
Here some responses from interviewees which show whether students of IPG
Kent can pronounce English words correctly or not.
I think they were definitely have problem in certain difficult words, but
generally most of the students able to do basic pronunciation.(Lecturer)
From my observation, I think that most students cant pronounce English
words correctly because we dont use English very much. So, how can we
know if our pronunciation is correct or not. (Student)
It is clearly seen that most students cannot pronounce English words correctly
even though they are able to do basic pronunciation. This is because, they are
rarely use the language, so they do not have a chance to check whether they
pronounce the words with correct pronunciation or not.
3) Can role plays improve students pronunciation skill ?
I believe so, I truly believe in thatbecause role plays allow students to be able
use the language without being subconscious about themselves and give
them more freedom to act on different role as so far. So, I guess it would be
one of the most effective way to actually improve pronunciation .(Lecturer)

Yes, I do think that role plays can improve pronunciation among students
because it give students a chance to know their level of pronunciation skill
whether it is in a good level or not.(Student)
From the responses of the interviewees, it can be concluded that role plays
help students to enhance their pronunciation. Both lecturer and students truly
believe that role plays can boost students pronunciation. This is because, role
plays give students space to speak in English. It also allows and trains
students to be able use the language confidently. In addition, it gives students
a chance to know their level of pronunciation skill . From that, students will
learn how to pronounce the words correctly.
4) Does role play can create an active English language classroom ?
It is glad to hear that both lecturer and student are truly agree and believe that
role plays can create an English language classroom. Role play is an activity
which involves movement. During role play, students do not only make a
movement, but at the same time, they can have fun and can learn to improve
their communication skill in English. Here are their responses :
I strongly believe it, because role play gives students that security and
confidence to be someone else when they actually use the language. So, I
think it is really a good activity especially in English classroom.(Lecturer)
Yes, I do think so. Like I said before, role play is an activity and it is fun. So,
students can engage more in the activity. They can have a role and involve in
activityandrole play. It also involves movement, it doesnt really need to use
mental. We can have fun and at the same time we can learn.(Student)
