Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management aka Research Data ToolKit (RDTK)
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management About the project
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management ~£450k – 50% JISC funded – October 2011 to March 2013
• one of 27 projects in the phase two of the JISC Managing Research Data Programme (JISCMRD) {1}
• JISCMRD continues earlier work which the demonstrates the benefits of improved research data management (RDM) {2}
• ties in with HEFCE University Modernisation Fund (UMF) Shared Services and Cloud Programme {3}

Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Information Hertfordshire – HHSRI – SSAHRI – STRI
• 2.0 FTE Project team from Information Hertfordshire working with Research Groups across University of Hertfordshire
• Stakeholder Forum to assist engagement and disseminate
• Steering Group to oversee and revisit policy if necessary
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Mission
The objectives of the project are to audit current best practice and develop technology demonstrators with the assistance of leading UH research groups; and reflect these developments back into the wider internal and external research community via a Research Data ToolKit.
The overall aim is to contribute to the efficacy and quality of research data planning, and establish and cement good data management practice in line with local and national policy
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Motivation
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management National Policy Context
• The management of research data is recognised as one of the most pressing challenges facing the higher education and research sectors {1}
• Research data generated by publicly-funded research is seen as a public good and should be available for verification and re-use {4}
• All UK Research Councils require their grant holders to manage and retain their research data for re-use, unless there are specific and valid reasons not to do so {5}
• Research data can also be the subject of requests under Freedom of Information legislation or Environmental Information Regulations

Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Local Policy Context
• UPR12 Data Management Policy {6}
• Section 7 – Research Data + Appendix III University Guide To Research Data Management {6}
…the University recognises the value of data as an institutional resource and considers that value to be increased through the widespread and appropriate use of data…
…Data Stewards are responsible and accountable… …for the purposes of research data, the Principal Investigator is the Data Steward

Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Benefit
• Appropriate data management planning will be necessary to attract funding • A data management plan is a useful device for both project planning and operational
efficiency
• RDM best practice protects against data loss and damage and personal/corporate reputational damage
• Some of the hidden costs of RDM may be transferred to central services
• Published ‘data’ can attract citations
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Research Data ToolKit
Research Data ToolKit Best practice guidance and pilot services
The Research Data ToolKit {7} will be distilled from 8 work packages covering:
• audit RDM practice at UH
• develop data management planning
• technology demonstrators for day-to-day RDM
• consider regulatory and legal issues such as
IPR, data protection, licensing
• technology demonstrators for long term curation of ‘published’ datasets

Research Data ToolKit Audit good (and bad) RDM practice at UH
• targeted at Research Groups from each of the Research Institutes, assisted by the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) {8}
• other engagement welcomed, early interventions possible
• aim is for knowledge transfer from experienced RDM practitioners to all staff holding valuable data

{9}
Research Data ToolKit Data management planning • build on the ‘checklist’ from the University Guide
To Research Data Management
• Cathy Tong, Information Manager (Research Support) can assist {10}
• Use DCC DMPonline - data management planning tool {11}
• UH specific versions of DMPonline to follow

{12}
Research Data ToolKit Pilot services for day to day RDM
Leverage the ‘local cloud’ {13} then look to the commercial cloud for, for example:
• Networked storage and backup for research groups with students and external collaborators
• Shared document and data management systems
• Database hosting

Research Data ToolKit Regulatory and legal issues
• Can we share this data?
• Does our data need a license?
• What about security standards?
• Can we use a datacentre located in Iceland?
• What do we need in a Service Level Agreement?
Research Data ToolKit Data Publishing infrastructure
• UH Research Archive {14} extended to support data
• Digital Object Identifiers for data {15}
• Citations for Datasets
• Open access or restricted via Shibboleth/Athens

Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Impact
Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Impact {16}
with the impact of… ü embedding best practice RDM
ü satisfying policy
ü enhancing research excellence
ü increasing share of research income
The Research Data ToolKit will enable us to…
• plan our data management better
• look after our working data better
• extend the value and life of our data
