Research Center on Concrete Infrastructure (CRIB)More than just a research centre, CRIB is a unique experience offered by an energetic and ambitious multidisciplinary team full of ideas and projects.

The members of the CRIB team share a strong commitment to cutting-edge research, training, and technology transfer. The centre provides a multidisciplinary environment driven by real synergy between experts in materials science, structural engineering, and economic analysis.

Funded by the Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Nature et Technologies, CRIB is a strategic cluster dedicated to developing new materials and tools to help predict and lengthen the service life of new structures and structures needing repair.

CRIB researchers study the financial, social, and environmental costs involved in constructing and maintaining concrete structures. The CRIB scientific program is driven by a sustainable resource development strategy.

CRIB brings together several complementary multidisciplinary teams composed of civil, geological, and mining engineers, chemists, and economic analysts. Their research focuses on three main areas:

> Extending the service life of new structures

> Optimizing the repair and maintenance of existing structures

> Sustainable development and innovative technology

The mission of CRIB is to develop new materials, innovative techniques, and state-of-the-art technological tools to help Quebec engineers and managers optimize the design of new concrete structures, while at the same time improving the maintenance and security of existing structures. CRIB researchers are also active in the area of cost assessment and industrial and mining waste conver-sion, recycling, and stabilization.

100 %

CRIB researchers are proud to present their new laboratory on the sustainable development of public infrastructure. Funded in large part by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the 1,388 m2 laboratory was built on the southern end of the Adrien-Pouliot building and represents an investment of over $17.5 million, including equipment costs. The new facility will help CRIB researchers better meet requirements for infrastructure safety studies by enabling them to test full-scale components, study the effects of material degradation on the behaviour of engineering structures (alkali-silica reaction (ASR), corrosion, etc.), and experiment on entire segments of existing structures. With this world-class lab, CRIB scientists will be able to innovate and provide research and educational opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students alike. The laboratory further strengthens CRIB’s position by adding to the top-notch facilities already available in Quebec City, Montreal, and Sherbrooke.

CRIB-Laval’s shotcrete team was recognized in the spring of 2013 by the American Shot-crete Association (ASA) for “their exemplary leadership and support in establishing and developing the shotcrete industry.”

CRIB scientists are also stepping up their participation in various knowledge-sharing events. The International Federation for Structural Concrete chose CRIB to host the 10th FIB International Symposium in Civil Engineering in Quebec City, July 21–23, 2014. FIB is a leading international association whose mission is to advance knowledge on concrete and concrete structures. The event will be an opportunity for graduate students to share information with the international scientific community. Researchers and industry stakeholders from around the world will be on hand to share information and discuss their research experiences.

Joining CRIB means —

Membership in a dynamic, multidisciplinary research team made up of

> Professors with diverse backgrounds and expertise

> A technical and professional team that helps run and promote the centre

> Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows

> Undergraduate interns

Access to an active national and international network through collaboration with

> Regroupement francophone pour la recherche et la formation sur le béton (RF)2B (École des Mines de Douai, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, ENS Cachan, INSA Toulouse, INSA Lyon, Université de Liège)

> Other international consortiums and associations (ACBM, IFSTAR, RILEM, etc.)

The opportunity to use state-of-the-art laboratory equipment

> Laboratoire d’étude de la durée de vie des infra-structures (Université Laval), inaugurated in 2006

> Laboratoire de recherche sur le comportement structural des grands ouvrages de génie civil (Polytechnique Montréal), inaugurated in 2006

> Laboratoire intégré de recherche en valorisation des matériaux et de structures innovatrices et durables (Université de Sherbrooke), inaugurated in 2007

> Laboratoire sur le développement durable des infra-structures publiques (Université Laval), inaugurated in 2012

More scholarship opportunities > 24 scholarships have been awarded in the past

three years

> ACI awards five graduate scholarships every year

Participation in a wide range of stimulating activities> CRIB organizes two student meetings a year, held

alternately in Montreal, Quebec City, or Sherbrooke

> CRIB regularly takes part in the Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition and the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race

> CRIB actively participates in training at the CREATE summer school on innovations in optimal manage-ment of concrete structures
