DAVIESS COUNTY TEST PLOTS
PURPOSE: To provide reliable data on the yield potential of the brands that are best suited for this area. Through these plots we attempt to provide educational information in an unbiased and scientific form to the producers of the area. PLOT LOCATION: Variety trials were implemented in all areas of the county. Plots were located to the west, south, and east of Owensboro, representing various soil types, planting dates, and rainfall amounts. COUNTY-WIDE PLOT FORMAT: To increase the comparison of a variety from one plot to another, we developed a plot design that required each plot to follow the same plan. In the plan we required that the check be placed after every three varieties so that we could make a reliable adjusted yield calculation. An adjusted yield calculation was figured using the surrounding check yields as a basis. Also, to allow the check variety to be evaluated, the third check in each plot was calculated and adjusted on an individual basis and the results enclosed in parenthesis.
To allow producers to gauge the dry-down ability of the hybrids, we have included the maturity days of each one.

2016 Crop Year in Review Clint Hardy Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Education – Daviess County Farmers and owners who rent land to farm businesses for crop production are completely aware of the influence weather has on soil, growing plants and profitability as it relates to the effect on yield. The 2016 growing season weather delivered great difficulty in achieving timeliness as it relates to ideal planting dates for crops grown in this area and in crop care due to wind and rain delays. As summer arrived, continued weather challenges caused considerable flooding and crop losses in lowlands and created an environment suitable for disease development. This greatly increased production expense due to implementing additional control strategies, yet disappointing yields followed in corn and tobacco, driving profitability to negative margins for many. Conversations through the winter months pertained less to weather or basketball and more on the continued depression in commodity price and profit outlook. The story could already be seen in the winter fields as far fewer wheat acres were planted in Daviess County than in recent years due to lower revenue insurance price guarantees and enterprise budgets which indicated minimal profit potential given reasonable yields. Many experienced minimal profit in 2015, heightening the concern for 2016 and requiring producers to make difficult decisions in terms of renegotiating rental agreements, selling machinery, and refinancing debt. As for production, every farm business evaluated individual fields to determine if crop rotation should be broken for continued soybean production or corn, given yield history. As with most winters in recent years, 2016 didn’t provide an early spring. Snow in mid-January followed by additional precipitation and freezing temperatures in February kept fields wet but the freeze/thaw action is always beneficial for soil structure improvement. Cold temperatures continued through the first week of March, delaying tobacco greenhouse seeding until the second week for most farms. As always, longer days and warmer temperatures in March helped dry fields but consistent rain during the month prevented much from being accomplished in the field until the final days of the month. April arrived bringing continued rain through the first week with drier, warmer conditions set to arrive by mid-month. The very earliest corn was planted late in the second week with most producers getting a good run in through that weekend until the first half of the third week when heavy rain and cold temperatures returned on Thursday. We didn’t realize it then, but those five days would prove to be the only corn planted in optimal soil conditions during the ideal planting window this year. Rain continued the last two weeks of April leaving much concern for wheat flowering in wet, although cool conditions. Many cornfields were emerging slowly with a yellowed appearance and some were noticing slug damage in no-till fields.
Sun and dry soils returned planters to the field late in the first week of May
through the following Monday but a storm of historic significance unleashed wind, rain, and more hail than anyone had ever seen around noon on Tuesday, May 10. Warmer weather in the days leading up to this had begun to green up stressed corn, wheat seed head development had initiated, and some tobacco had been set near Rome. The May storm changed the trajectory of the county for the rest of the growing season. Thousands of acres of corn were severely affected by hail damage and surface water remained after several inches of rain. In addition to crop damage, tens of millions of dollars in property damage to homes and autos occurred, affecting almost the entire county. The storm brought a nearly five-mile wide band of hail that initiated in the west half of the county and continued east all the way through Whitesville. Calm air and sunshine returned the very next day but cool temperatures persisted the rest of the week, slowing regrowth in damaged corn. Heavily saturated fields and flooding in low lying areas delayed field work until the next week. Weather late in the month would turn around, allowing corn to be planted or replanted and soybean planting to begin.
June arrived and brought ideal growing conditions. Soybean planting was ongoing
through the month with some of the fields flooded in May still having late corn planted in the first week. Hot and dry during most of the month, some irrigation began and by the end of the month, many were discussing the need for rain. Heavy wind late in the month caused green snap in many west county cornfields but no rain. Wheat harvest got underway and the cool temperatures during the wet flowering period held head scab to low levels, providing high quality wheat. Those needing rain would get plenty in the days to follow.
The first round of rain fell over the Fourth of July weekend. Fireworks events
were cancelled across the county but farmers and landowners were not disappointed. The mid-April corn was in full tassel so the weekend rain provided a great source of hope for the summer crops growing across the county. Then weather unleashed on Friday, July 8. Severe straight-line wind to the county toppled trees, downed powerlines, caused significant building damage, severely leaned tobacco over, and leveled many late-planted cornfields. Wet soils allowed roots to pull instead of the typical broken stalks but the unknown effect on yield would persist to harvest. The second week of July would bring even more heavy rain on soils still wet from the previous week. Significant soil erosion occurred, not typical during the growing season and tobacco wilted down, reminding everyone of the terrible 2015 tobacco year. Flood waters again rose in Panther and tributary creek bottom lands. Much of this water went down over the next 12 hours, leaving soybeans covered in mud, which would be washed off by yet another storm late in the third week. Some fields remained flooded for several days costing a few thousand acres of corn and soybeans in the lowest bottom lands and the destruction of hundreds of acres of tobacco.
August came and brought further crop destruction in the form of southern corn leaf rust infection across the county. The earliest corn was past the point of yield loss but tens of thousands of acres remained at risk. Widespread fungicide application was implemented resulting in additional production expense to a deteriorating crop. As tobacco began to ripen, the evidence of a growing season conducive for disease showed up as well. Hundreds of acres of tobacco was severely affected by frogeye leaf spot, and bacterial rot left some fields covered in leaves at harvest. The heavy rains of July had moved on but additional rain in August provided the moisture needed for soybean pod fill. Tobacco harvest began with the battle of crooked stalks and ground suckers obstructing progress.
Disease and frequent soil saturation caused an early demise to the corn crop;
moisture below 20 percent initiated harvest on Labor Day weekend for many farms. Early planted corn yields were not exceptional but acceptable, given the weather events it had endured. As corn continued to dry and combines moved on to the late corn, yields declined drastically. Several thousand acres of Daviess County corn had very disappointing yields. Following a very difficult 2015, additional losses could provide challenges for most producers. The soybean yield turned out to be pleasing and much needed to offset losses in tobacco and corn.
Even fewer wheat acres were planted in 2016 compared to 2015, a testimony to
the challenge of budgeting a profit with high production expenses and low commodity prices. As producers plan for 2017, the discussion will return to the previous winter. How long can we afford disappointing burley tobacco yield and price, while inputs continue to increase? How can cash rent costs be sustainable given the negative profit opportunity? Will land prices continue their trend of increasing during the long-term downward trend? Should we stay in rotation or go heavy on soybeans, reducing yield risk while keeping working capital in the bank?
While 2016 was a year many will be happy to move past, we should be reminded
that opportunities arise in the face of difficult periods. We are always a phone call or visit away at the Cooperative Extension Service. Let us help you prepare for success in 2017. Clint Hardy Daviess County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Education
