Resampling of Industries
In July 1986 the Bureau of Labor Statistics published thefirst results of a systematic process, called recycling, for up-dating the Producer Price Index sample for the mining andmanufacturing sectors on an industry-by-industry basis. Ef-fective with this report, the second set of recycled industriesis now being introduced.
Recycling will not automatically be carried out for everyindustry on a periodic basis; instead, industries will be re-sampled as needed. When the structure, membership, technology, or product mix of an industry has shiftedsignificantly, the sample for that industry will be updated toreflect current conditions more accurately.
Thirty-five manufacturing and two mining industries thathave been recycled are being introduced this month. Indexesfor these industries $nd most of their products will continueto appear in table 5 of the detailed monthly report, ProducerPrice Indexes.

Resampling of Industries
In July 1986 the Bureau of Labor Statistics published thefirst results of a systematic process of resampling to updatethe Producer Price Index sample for the domestic miningand manufacturing sectors on an industry-by-industry basis. The second effort was completed in January 1987. Effec-tive with this report, the third set of resampled industriesis introduced. Under the resampling procedure, the samplefor an industry is updated to reflect current conditions moreaccurately when the structure, membership, technology, orproduct mix of an industry has shifted significantly.
Thirty resampled manufacturing industries are being in-troduced this month. Indexes for these industries and mostof their products will continue to appear in table 5 of thedetailed monthly report, Producer Price Indexes.

In July 1986, the Bureau of Labor Statistics published thefirst results of a systematic process of resampling to updatethe Producer Price Index sample for the domestic miningand manufacturing sectors on an industry-by-industry basis.Subsequent efforts were completed in January 1987 and July1987. Effective with this release, the fourth set of resam-pled industries is introduced. Under the resampling proce-dure, the sample for an industry is updated to reflect currentconditions more accurately when the structure, membership, technology, or product mix of an industry has shifted sig-nificantly.
Thirty-six resampled manufacturing industries and oneresampled mining industry are being introduced this month.Indexes for these industries and most of their products willcontinue to appear in table 5 of the monthly report, ProducerPrice Indexes.
In addition, the scheduled air cargo, air courier, and charterair transportation portions of the air transportation, certifi-cated carriers index (sic 4511) are being introduced into thePPI system this month. When the air passenger portion ofthe index is collected in the PPI, an overall 4-digit indexcovering scheduled air cargo and air passenger services willbe published. At that time, the SIC coding will shift from the1972 numbering (SIC 4511) to that of 1987 (SIC 4512).
