. DIRECTOR'S NOTES"SHOW BOAT' - What is it about this work that makes a Director want to take it on? In mycase - the music - the wonderful, glorious, Jerome Kern Score - first and last, the music.

Anything else? How about a book that gives a Directorthe following elements with which towork: Interesting characters, strong conflicts, robust comedy, unabashed sentimentality, and an opportunity for spectacle and theatricality - in a book that reflects an obviousaffection for theatre and theatre people.

Finally, how about a message? - a "something serious" to add to the story -like a statementabout racial prejudice and injustice.

These are the elements that attracted me to this work - the elements that I have attempted tobring out in our production. I hope you will have as much enjoyment viewing the show as Ihave had working with it.

KATHLEEN EMMONS - Ellie - Kathleen makes her first appearance onour stage after completing the role of Winifred in West Valley College's"Once Upon A Mattress" earlier this year. A native Californian, she attendsSan Jose State where she is a Theatre Arts Major and she studies dancingwith Benny Smith. She has appeared in local productions of "Wizard ofOZ", "Cinderella", Grease", "Damn Yankees" and West Side Story".Kathleen is married, has a 2-year old son and enjoys crafts and interiordecorating in addition to the arts.

ED WISCHMEYER - Frank - Well, Ed is back and West Valley LightOpera's got him. That's true, Ed was in our orchestra pit for severalproductionsand then moved to the Midwest, but now that he's back, we'vemoved him from the pit to the stage! With a PhD from MIT, he is a softwareengineer for ESL and is single and very available. He states that thehighlight of his career to date was being the lead software engineer on the"Topo" home robot. We hope his 'villainous' role in this melodrama doesn'tgive him any ideas in creating a mean robot! He likes square dancing andflying (as an instructor). So, gals, if you wanna fly high - in the sky - Ed'syour rnanl

STEPHEN VON TILL - Steve - This is Stephen's second show, he madehis debut in "Annie" and his daughter, Katherine, who plays Kim Ravenalas a child, also performed in "Annie" as the smallest orphan. Stephen has aBA in Humanities from Michigan State University and earned his LawDegree at the University of Illinois. His law office is in Fremont and heenjoys playing guitar and softball and attending the Shakespeare Festivalin Ashland, Oregon. In addition to Katie, Stephen and wife, Beth, also havea son, Steve, Jr. attending Mitty High School. Welcome back, Stephen andKatie.

ROBERT SOLIS - Joe - Another talented newcomer to WVLO, Robert ismajoring in Theater Arts at SJSUand has also had 3years of mime trainingwith Sue Hargrave. At Newark High School, Robert was the recipient of 2Best Supporting Actor Awards and most recently appeared in SCP's"Damn Yankees". At PMI he is employed as a QA Technician and hishobbies include mime, art, running, science fiction and getting married toLinda Kessel! Don't let those hobbies keep you away from futurecommunity theater productions! And we hope you achieve your ambitionof having your own mime company I

BEVERLY OLIVIER-BLOUNT - Queenie - Not only is this Beverly's debut,it is her first stage appearance as well and we are proud of herperformance. She has had 15years of violin training and 3 years of voice.Beverly came to the Bay Area with her husband, Walker and daughter,Stephanie, when they were relocated by IBM from Los Angeles in 1971.She is a student nurse with Evergreen Valley College and wants toeventually become a registered psychiatric nurse. In addition to herhobbies of singing, playing violin and racquetball, Beverly indicates that aVocal Gospel Concert in Maui, Hawaii, has been the highlight of hersinging career. Thank you, Beverly, for sharing your wonderful talentswith us for this production.

LINDA COVINGTON - Magnolia Hawkes - A resident of our Bay Areasince 1980, Linda makes her debut with WVLO, but has been busy on otherstages this year. She just completed the role of Laurey in Foothill College'sproduction of "Oklahoma I" and had appeared with Gilbert & Sullivan inSan Jose earlier. She has a Bachelor of Music and had been an oratoriosoloist and recitalist until moving West. At the age of 12, she becameinterested in music and took piano at Milwaukee's "Skylight Theatre" andlater was cast as Edith in "Pirates of Penzance" in Jr. High. With a busyhusband and three sons, Linda stills finds time to teach voice. We are alsodelighted she takes time to participate in community theater. We lookforward to seeing Linda back on our stage again.

BILL WILKINSON - Gaylord Ravenal - Bill also makes his debut on ourstaqe with WVLO, but has performed here with SDG as the Russian Tenorin "Fiddler On The Roof" last year. Bill earned his BA in Economics at theUniversity of Minnesota by singing in coffee houses, so he knows how tosell a song. A self-employed financial planner, Bill has set his goal to beworth $1 Million by the year 2000! Better watch out Bill; with that goal, combined with all your "Southern" charm and your hobbies of skiing, golfand tennis, you'll have all those gals out there flocking to your door!

LES DALE - Captain Andy Hawkes - Even though this is Les's sixthproduction with WVLO, it is his first principal role. You will remember himas FOR in "Annie", and in minor roles in "Man of La Mancha", "StudentPrince", "Brigadoon", and "Wonderful Town". Hewas bit by the acting bugback in 1979 when his daughter, Julie, convinced him he should auditionfor "Gypsy" for SCPo He did and was given the role of Pops, and since thenLes has been creating characters for numerous shows. His wife, Elizabeth, enjoys working on the technical staff and is always a ready volunteer. Lesis an engineer for Pacific Bell and is one of those almost extinct Bay Areanatives.

MARGE HAND - Parthy Ann Hawkes - Playing Les Dale's wife on stagewill mark Marge's nineteenth appearance with WVLO and will bring backmemories for she played Les's daughter, Rose, in his first performance in"Gypsy". She says Les got younger 'cause she couldn't possibly have agedthat much! Marge was last seen as Vera in last season's production of"Mame" and her list of credits include most of the leading characters in themajor musicals - Dolly in "Hello, Doily", Golde in "Fiddler", Agnes in "I Do!I Do!", Elizabeth Barrett Browning in "Robert & Elizabeth", and two roleswhich earned her ERMA awards, Aunt Eller in "Oklahoma!" and ProfessorKenyon in "Good News". She has just been elected Charter President ofthe Local Quota Club, a service organization which works for the speechand hearing impaired, so she will keep busy with community projects forsome time. Her family projects are limited to husband, Ed, since the last oftheir three daughters is at college.

LINDA KESSEL - Julie - Another Linda who is also making her debut withWVLO. A graduate of SJSU with a Bachelor of Music Degree, she hasstudied classical voice for 10 years and is currently studing with JeanneGarson. She has performed with the San Jose Community Opera Theaterfor four years, was the Mother in "Amahl and the Night Visitors" and will beperforming the role of Florence Pike in "Albert Herring" in March, 1985.She performed in several plays and musicals, including "Damn Yankees","You Can't Take It With You", and "Arsenic and Old Lace", and won a Bankof America award for drama. A secretary for VIA Systems, Inc. ofSunnyvale, Linda is engaged to Robert Solis (our Joe) and they areplanning an April wedding. We wish them much happiness, but certainlyhope they will return to grace our stage with their talents again soon.

BEN KANTER - Director- Ben makes his directing debut with West ValleyLight Opera, but is well-known in the Bay Area; both for his directing andhis performances. He teaches at DeAnza College in the SpeechDepartment and holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Stage Directingt-orn Florida State University. Ben also earned a degree in Theatre fromWayne State University in Detroit and completed graduate study inTheatre at Denver University. Over the past 25 years he has acted asdirecting assistant in San Diego, Seattle, Washington, D.C.; worked on amusical that opened on Broadway; and acted, directed and worked as atechnician in professional, college and community theaters across thecountry. Local audiences will remember him as Horace Vandergelder inSCP's "Hello, Doily", and as Charlie Cowell in CAST's ''The Music Man".He will be directing "Life With Father" for SCP in January. Some of thefamous people that Ben has met and/or worked with over the years includeMae West, Cesar Romero, Martha Raye, Eve LeGallienne, George Abbott,Martha Graham, Lily Tomlin and Dick Van Patten. But the real "star" inBen's life are his lovely wife, Lucy, and his darling, little daughter.

WANDA SAXTON - Music Director - Because "Show Boat" is her favoriteshow, it was easy to convince Wanda that she should take up her mightybaton once again. Her most recent WVLOshow was "Annie" and of coursewe could not forget her "behind-the-scenes" orchestra for "Man of LaMancha" which received such excellent reviews. Wanda received her BAat the University of New Hampshire and will soon acquire her MA from SanJose State. She is an Administrative Assistant for Talbot Tours, Inc. andjust recently became a grandma for the first time. With her many talents, versatility, and love for community theater, Wanda is a welcome member toour staff.

DIANE REYNOLDS - Choral Director- This is Diane's second productionas Choral Director. her first being our Award-winning "Annie" last season. She made her first stage appearance at the age of 5 (we won't say how longago that was!) and has been studying and performing ever since, in USOshows, movies, TV, as church organist, and in community theater. Dianehas performed as the on-stage pianist in Montalvo's "70, Girls, 70" andmost recently on our stage in "Rogers & Hart, A Musical Celebration" andshe has been one of WVLO's most dedicated pianists. An accountant forGeneral Electric, Diane is the proud mother of Rick, an orchestra memberin this production, and daughter, Robin, a multi-talented young lady in ourensemble. She says her career ambition is to keep up theatrically with Rick& Robin - better get yourself a pair of motorized dance shoes, Mother!

PATTI D. FORD - Choregrapher - Our regular subscribers will rememberthis talented young lady as the whiny-voiced Gloria Upson in "Mame" andthe giggly Velma in "West Side Story". But Patti is also an excellant dancer, having 'wowed em' with a tap dance at the age of 3, she has had years ofdancing lessons and for several years has worked closely with BarbaraValente as assistant choreographer in "West Side Story" and most recently"Eubie". Besides theater she fills her life with husband. Byron Westlund(also a talented performer) and daughter, Kezziah (which means a goldenshepherd). We are very pleased to have Patti on our staff in her firstposition as Choreographer for WVLO.
