1 INTRODUCTION

The present Requirements Specification (RS) outlines the project, development, performance and testing requirements for the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR), which is part of the Integrated Navigation (INAV).

1.1 Equipment Purpose

The purpose of the VDR is:

To maintain a store, in a secure and retrievable form, of information concerning the position, movement, physical status, command and control of a ship over the period leading up to and following an incident having an impact thereon.

Information contained in a VDR should be made available to both the Administration and the ship owner. This information is for use during any subsequent safety investigation to identify the cause(s) of the incident.

1.2 Equipment Overview

VDR means a complete system, including:

any items required to interface with the sources of input signals, their processing and encoding;

the final recording medium;

the playback equipment;

the power supply and dedicated reserve power source.

The exchange of data between the VDR and other equipment or Subsystems (S/S) shall be made through external interfaces, which are described later in this document.

1.3 Document Overview

This document is organised as follows:

Section 1: Provides an overview of the VDR and defines the scope of the document;

Section 2: Lists the reference documents drawn upon by this document;

Section 3: Lists the definitions and the acronyms;

Section 4: Defines the functional and non-functional requirements that the VDR must satisfy.

4.2.6.2 Maintenance Levels Definition

[RS-VDR-0460]

Maintenance activities defined by the Final Customer (MM) for the VDR are organized into five levels:

On board:

o 1st level: maintenance operations are carried out by means of on board resources;

o 2nd level alfa: maintenance operations are performed by on board crew with support of ashore personnel.

Ashore:

o 2nd level bravo: maintenance operations are carried out on board by means of ashore resources;

o 3rd level: maintenance operations are carried out by ashore personnel or ashore resources, without intervention of the on board resources. Maintenance is carried out both on board and ashore and, potentially, also with support from the equipment Supplier;

o 4th level: maintenance operations are carried out at the equipment Suppliers’s premises, with its direct involvement.

automatic, periodic equipment check;

continuous performance monitoring.

The disruption of the BITE circuitry shall not affect other operational functions.

The BITE function shall be:

On-Line: performed during normal operation, without affecting the operational functions and the system performances;

Off-Line: performed during preventive maintenance.

[End of requirement]

4.2.7.2 Performances

[RS_VDR_0500]

The BITE shall detect no less than:

85% of failures trough on-line BITE;

90% of failures trough on-line and off-line BITE;

100% of safety critical failures.

Hidden failures, not detected by the BITE, shall be investigable by using manual test procedures and external means, if necessary.

[End of requirement]

[RS_VDR_0510]

The BITE shall be able to:

Isolate faults down to 1 LRU for more than 80% of the detectable failures (through on line or off line tests).

Isolate fault down to a maximum of 3 LRUs for more than 95% of the detected failures (through on line or off line tests).

In case of BITE ambiguity in the isolation of the failed LRU, this shall be isolated using manual test procedures and external means, if necessary.
