Required Power Courses ECE 320 Energy Systems I/ECE 321 Energy Systems I lab:

Covers single-phase AC measurements, National Electrical Code, power quality, transformer parameters, transformer performance, single phase power flow, rotating DC machines, single phase rectifiers, DC-DC power electronic converters and switched mode power supplies. Prereq: ECE 212 and Physics 212. Coreq: ECE 321.

Power Technical Electives ECE 420 Energy Systems II (revised): Three-phase systems,

three-phase transformers, regulating transformers, winding theory, rotating waves, synchronous machines, per unit analysis, and induction machines. Lab projects on synchronous generators, three phase transformers and induction machines. – Prereq: ECE 320/1

Changes to power systems emphasis electives– At present stand -alone ECE 423– Will be two courses to improve coverage: ECE 421 and ECE 423

Power Technical Electives ECE 421 (ECE 404 in Fall 08) Introduction to Power Systems:

Review three phase basics, including V, I, P, & Q relationships. Introduce major power system components and their models. Combine component models to form power system model. Study large networks and power flow calculation methods. Laboratory and simulation exercises on power flow analysis. Prereq: ECE 420

ECE 423 Power Systems Analysis (modified from existing ECE 423): Develop and utilize techniques for the analysis of power systems. Principles of economic analysis, short circuit studies, and stability analysis. Introduce protective relaying and FACTS devices. Application of computer programs to power systems problems. Prereq ECE 420.

Power Technical Electives ECE 427 Power Electronics and AC Drives: Three phase

diode rectifiers, controlled three phase rectifiers, three phase voltage sourced converters, power electronic devices. Prereq: ECE 420.

Other options:

– WSU Protective Relaying Course: WSU EE 493/494 lab (offered with UI numbers)

– Undergraduates can enroll in 500 level courses as seniors if GPA above 2.8

Power Emphasis The Power emphasis prepares students for a variety of

careers with electric utilities, consulting firms, and with manufacturing and design firms. Students should take a total of 18 credits from the following: (a) 6 core credits: ECE 420 and 450, and (b) 3 core credits from: 410, 430, 440, and (c) 9 additional credits of technical electives including: 423, 427.
