A network of DNA banks (www.dnabank-network.org) was established in spring 2007, supported by the German Science Foundation(DFG). The network covers the whole range of biological diversity and will be maintained by four partner institutions: the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology Munich (ZSM), the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM), the Zoological Forschungs-museum Alexander Koenig Bonn (ZFMK) and the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures Braunschweig (DSMZ). The main focus of the network is to enhance taxonomic, systematic, genetic, and evolutionary studies by providing high quality DNA material.

Scientists will have the opportunity to

obtain DNA samples to extend and complement previous studies.

obtain DNA extracts for new taxonomic, systematic, conservation genetic and evolutionary studies.

deposit DNA samples under optimal DNA storage conditions andfree of charge. The donors of DNA samples are guaranteed freeaccess to their samples and have the possibility to block the release of the DNA to other scientists for a limited time period.

support good scientific practice as the deposition of DNA sampleswarrants a general verifiability of the already obtained and published results, following the “Proposals for safeguarding good scientific practice” by the DFG.
