The selection of indicators for this publication was guided by national relevancy and compliance with the global list of SDGs indicators, as well as usage for 2020 VNR, availability of the time-series data and disaggregation dimensions required. Additionally, the performance (trend) by SDGs indicators is presented. All relative indicators are calculated applying the usual residence population, except a few indicators marked with asterisk, for which the stable population was used.

Dear Readers,

The Republic of Moldova, along with other 192 countries members of the United Nations has undertaken the commitment to implement the UN Resolution on the Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the General Assembly Resolution on the 25th of September 2015. This Agenda is going to accomplish what has been initiated within the Millennium Development Goals, representing a plan of action for People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships. The main purpose of agenda is to eradicate the poverty by 2030 in all its dimensions and to ensure sustainable development all over the world increasing the prosperity of humans and economies while protecting the environment and the planet overall.

The 2030 global Agenda provides a new approach on development, emphasizing on promotion of human rights, people’s interests being placed at the center of the development process, which could be accomplished in a sustainable way by empowering the people to participate, contribute and benefit of economic, cultural, social and political development. Due to this, the world is to implement the Agenda through its 17 Goals and 169 specific targets, covering all key dimensions of development: economic, social, and environment.

The Republic of Moldova has embraced the global agenda through its adaptation to the country-specific context, in order to make it meaningful, feasible and impactful at the country level. Hence, in consultation with the line ministries, public institutions, civil society, businesses, academia and development partners, the National Bureau of Statistics has led the process of setting up the national monitoring framework for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including the comprehensive set of national statistical indicators which enables the measurement, monitoring and reporting of the sustainable development strategic objectives and progress achieved in implementing the 2030 Global Agenda.

In the context of the first Voluntary National Review, presented by the Republic of Moldova in 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics, as the coordinator of the national statistical system, is pleased to present this publication describing the current status of Moldova in the context of the 17 Goals. The publication includes the core set of statistical indicators, with appropriate data disaggregation to capture the no one left behind principle, used for the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Moldova. While the full set of national SDGs indicators, compiled following the global indicator framework developed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs), can be found on the NBS official website.
