Introduction

Re-exports are products of foreign origin that have entered Cyprus but are "re-exported" in

substantially the same condition as when imported. Re-exports are previously recorded as

imports. Re-exports are included in total exports (total exports include domestic exports and

re-exports). Therefore, it should be noted that re exports do not have a substantial

contribution to the local economy.

At the end of the 70s re-exports started to have an upward trend and in 1982 they almost

doubled from the previous year to €100 million. By 1990 re-exports tripled and by 1995

they increased to €539 million. Since 1996, re-exports increased from €715 million to a pick

of €893 million in 2013. In 2014, re-exports dropped to 1996 level of around €709 million.

Minerals and fuels for ships and airplanes constitute around 33% of total re-exports from

Cyprus. Electrical machinery equipment which constitutes about 21% of total re-exports, has

noted a remarkable increase in the last few years. Re-exports are traditionally directed

mainly to EU countries. In 2014 the EU absorbed 60,8% (€431) of total re-exports from

Cyprus, from 60,7% (€542) in 2013.
