You recently received genetic screening during your

pregnancy and the results show a severe chromosomal

abnormality or severe disability of the developing fetus you are conceiving.

Would you continue conceiving the child?

Consider this:

Page 3: Reproductive Technology

Consider this:

You and your husband are carriers of sickle cell

genes. Will you consider genetic selection of you

fertilized embryos to avoid passing on the disease to

your child?

Page 4: Reproductive Technology

Consider this:

You and your husband have contracted with a surrogate who helped you carry your child. As your child grows, would you tell

him how he was conceived? Would you let the surrogate take part in your child’s life if

she insists to?

Just because Reproductive Technology has been resolving problems of infertility and responding to

the desire of want-to-be-parents, should this experimentation and life manipulation be accepted and legally recognized in this modern time? Up to

what extent should human beings allow themselves to be subject to experimentation in order to achieve their desire for procreation?

Page 6: Reproductive Technology

is clinically accepted as the inability to conceive after 12 months of actively trying to conceive.

1 in 10 Filipinos is suffering one or more conditions that prevent them from conceiving

In the Philippines, there is still no direct and specific rule and law on the matter of reproductive technology.

Children conceived or born during the marriage of the parents are legitimate.Children conceived as a result of artificial

insemination of the wife with the sperm of the husband or that of a donor or both are

likewise legitimate children of the husband and his wife, provided, that both of them

authorized or ratified such insemination in a written instrument executed and signed by them before the birth of the child. The

instrument shall be recorded in the civil registry together with the birth certificate

of the child.

is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. Ideally, it would be used to fix defective genes that cause diseases and other genetic complications.

Page 12: Reproductive Technology

is a prenatal test in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is removed from the sac surrounding the fetus for testing. The test can be done to look for birth defects and genetic problems in the developing baby.

Page 13: Reproductive Technology

is the procedure when sperm are inserted directly into a woman's cervix, fallopian tubes, or uterus. This makes the trip shorter for the sperm and bypasses any possible obstructions.

Page 14: Reproductive Technology

IVF involves combining eggs and sperm outside the body in a laboratory. Once an embryo or embryos form, they are then placed in the uterus. This procedure was once known as "test-tube babies”

Louise Brown, England 1978

Page 15: Reproductive Technology

is a micromanipulation procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg to attempt fertilization, used with male infertility or couples with prior IVF fertilization failure. (ASRM, n.d.)

Page 16: Reproductive Technology

is an arrangement in which a woman carries and births the biological child of another individual or couple who will raise the child.

So God created human beings, making them to be like Himself. He created them male and female.

“I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will become the mother of nations, and there will be kings among her descendants.”

Behold, children are a gift

of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb.

For everything there is a season,

and a time for every matter under heaven. A time to be born, and a

time to die

Do you not know that your bodies are

temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from

God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God

with your bodies.

Undergoing reproductive treatments is very costly and these treatments do not guarantee that a child will result.

Reproductive Technology practices selective reduction which aborts some implanted, developing embryos so the others have a better chance to survive, because if not, it may lead to multiple pregnancy.

Surrogates receive payment for producing a child beyond expenses they incur. Like the selling of organs, such arrangements wrongly commercialize the body.

Legal battles between the sets of parents involved in one child’s life are emerging.

Reproductive Technology violates the "one flesh" model of marriage in Scripture

Page 19: Reproductive Technology

Human procreation means that children should come into being as a direct result of the love-making of their parents, where they are accepted as a ‘gift’ and blessing and not as a ‘product’ of doctors and technicians.

Surrogacy is an experiment in child welfare. It also weakens the integrity and functionality of the family by confusing relationships

The marital act is not a manufacturing process, and children are not products.

The expansive use of reproductive technology deprives the children of the right to be conceived, carried in the womb, brought into the world and brought up within marriage. It hinders the natural and Godly course of life to take place.

Page 20: Reproductive Technology

Ethical issues of medical technology can be confusing and at times

frustrating. Christians nevertheless bear a responsibility to think biblically

about all areas of life. The Scriptures are to be the ultimate authority and

final judge on all things, as they represent the clear and consistent

Word of our great God.

God alone can give life. He made human beings according to

His own image and children are His gift to them.
