The Repository Documentation Utility can be used to automatically capture information about the metadata in your repository into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. This utility makes use of the Informatica Metadata Exchange SDK interfaces to access the repository. It is available on the Microsoft Windows platform only.

Note: This utility is a free download available on the Informatica Developer Network. The download also comes with source code for the program. No technical support for this utility is provided by Informatica technical support.

The following features are available in Repository Documentation Utility:

Connection subtype

Connect string

User name

Code page name

Yes or No flag – To indicate if this connection is used as part of a source or target connection within a session

Repository Object Details Report

This report provides a list of all workflows in the repository along with their dependent object names including worklets, sessions, mappings, transformations, sources, and targets. The following information is written into the Excel spreadsheet for each workflow in the repository:

Mapping name associated with the session

Sources used in the mapping along with source database type, source DBD name

Targets used in the mapping along with target database type

Transformations used in the mapping along with transformation type

Known Issues

If a source or target database type is overwritten at the session level to flat file, then they are not reflected in the report.

Source or Target associated connections are not displayed. Instead, the report displays all the source and target connections used in the session.

Installation and Configuration

Prerequisites

You need the following components installed before you can run the Repository Documentation Utility:

- Informatica Metadata Exchange SDK 7.x

- Informatica PowerCenter Repository Server 7.x

- Microsoft Excel

Installation

From the Repository Documentation Utility download package, run the setup program.

The Repository Documentation Utility runs on Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 only.

Running the Repository Documentation Utility

1. From the Start>Programs menu select Repository Documentation Tool.

2. After you start the program, enter the connection information for the repository you want to browse.

3. Select the option to choose either the whole repository or a folder.

If you choose the whole repository, the Repository Documentation Utility will go through every folder of the selected repository and creates the documentation for the entire repository. If you choose the folder option, the utility displays a drop down box where you can choose a single folder.

4. Select continue and the utility creates the excel output in the utility installation directory.

If you choose the whole repository it takes longer for the Repository Documentation Utility to complete its task. View the progress bar at the bottom for progress.

Output/Documentation

When the utility completes running, you can find the output in the repositoryname.xls file in the RepositoryDoc Tool installation folder. This Excel file contains both connection usage report and repository object details report. If there are problems with some of the entries in the repository, the error messages will be written in the corresponding cell in the Excel sheet and it will be marked red.
