This guide is going to demonstrate how to report scope 2 emissions from the consumption of electricity from a grid in a state or territory.

You are required to report the consumption of electricity when it is purchased from the main electricity grid in a State or Territory or another source outside the facility and you consume over 20,000 kilowatt hours per activity in a reporting period.

You would also report the consumption of electricity if you have generated it onsite for use at the same facility. The generation and consumption of own use electricity is covered in a different presentation.

Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions are the emissions released to the atmosphere from the consumption of an energy commodity that was produced elsewhere.

For example, a power station burns coal to power its generators and in turn creates electricity. Burning the coal causes scope 1 (or direct) greenhouse emissions to be emitted. If the electricity is then supplied to the grid and consumed by a factory to power its machinery and lighting, the consumption of the electricity is considered to generate scope 2 (or indirect) emissions.

Consumers influence the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, being emitted by the power station, through their demand for electricity.

If you purchase your electricity from the grid that supplies electricity to the largest percentage of the population in your State or Territory then you are purchasing electricity from the main grid. In Western Australia, the main grid is considered to be the Southwest Interconnected System.

Each State or Territory has its own scope 2 emission factor that reflects how the electricity is generated, so it is important that you ensure that you have selected the correct State or Territory for your facility when you report your electricity consumption.

If you purchase your electricity from the grid that doesn’t supply electricity to the largest percentage of the population in your State or Territory then you are purchasing electricity from another source.

If your supplier provides you with a custom emission factor for the purchased electricity, then that is the factor you will use when reporting. Otherwise, you are required to use the default factor, which is the same as that for the Northern Territory.

Emissions and energy data, that is required under the NGER Act, is reported using the Emissions and Energy Reporting System (EERS), an online reporting program administered by the Clean Energy Regulator.

You are required to report each activity resulting in scope 2 emissions, from electricity consumption, for each of your facilities if the amount triggers the reporting threshold.

The first step to entering activity data is to select the facility you are entering data for from your corporate structure.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 10

Page 12: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

To start entering activity data, click on the ‘Add Activity’ button.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 11

Page 13: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

‘Activity Description’ is a free text field that allows you to enter a custom description for the particular activity.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 12

Page 14: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

To enter activity data, you will first need to select a source category for the available options in the drop down menu. In this instance, select ‘Scope 2 emissions’ from the ‘Source Category’ drop-down menu.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 13

Page 15: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

Now select if you are purchasing electricity from the main grid in a state or territory or from a grid other than the main grid.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 14

Page 16: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

Next, you will be required to enter the amount of electricity that you have purchased for the reporting period. This amount is entered in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 15

Page 17: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

Next, select the method that you are using to report your scope 2 emissions.

GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 16

Page 18: Reporting scope 2 emissions - Clean Energy Regulator€¦ · Web viewReporting scope 2 emissions A guide to reporting under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 This

If you are reporting electricity consumption from another source, then you will be prompted to select if you are using the default emission factors or enter the factor provided to you by your electricity supplier.
