A JOURNEY TO OUTER SPACET

he world famous NationalAeronautics and SpaceAdministration (NASA) centre inCape Canaveral, Florida, USAbrings to our minds a destination of

awe, wonder and admiration. A destinationwhich many of us have only dreamt about. But students from the Manav RachnaInternational Schools (almost 100 innumber) saw their dream unfold into realityas these students walked into an arena whichopened in front of their eyes ‘The closestthing to space on Earth!’

They saw first-hand the vision of NASA :‘ To reach for new heights and reveal theunknown so that what we do and learn willbenefit all humankind.’ And according toinformation : To do that, thousands of peoplehave been working around the world for 50years, trying to answer some basic questions. What's out there in space? How do we getthere? What will we find? For these students it was all about

‘exploring the dramatic past, the thrillingpresent and the exciting future of America'shuman space flight.’ Their visit to the

Kennedy Space Centre, the Space shuttles orthe Apollo 11 and XII space-crafts or sittingin the ‘cockpit’ of a space shuttle was like adream come true. With specialized guides totake them on this magical journey onlymeant that their thirst to know more andmore about outer space only increased. TheAstronaut Training Experience was yetanother learning experience and notforgetting the lunch with an astronaut. Our students and their teachers have

shared their experiences to NASA and theUnited States of America in the inside pagesof August 2013 REPORTER ----

It has been the combined efforts ofthe teachers, Principal Ma'am , HeadMistress Mam and us which hashelped us get good results. Regularhard work, a daily schedule for studiesand a balanced approach towardstudies and co-curricular activitieswent a long way in getting a goodresult. Also, the efforts of my teachersand parents gave me the impetus tocontinue with full enthusiasm anddiligence. My mother has always been my

biggest inspiration as she has alwaysbeen a pillar of support for methrough thick and thin. Hercontinued guidance and inspiration isalways a great help to me. I put in atleast 3hours of self study daily and tried to follow aregular schedule for all the activities to get therequired results.Read a lot! Extra reading beyond NCERT

and course books is the way to go to betteryour results, especially in the languages. A goodgrip on English also helps a lot in the subjectivesubjects. And, of course, there is no substitutefor practice. I wish to pursue Clinical Psychology or

Neuropsychology in a reputed internationaluniversity, such as Harvard or Cambridge. Till

then, I aim to delve deeper into my syllabus aswell as widen my horizons by taking up newhobbies and courses.

Givingproper guidance, motivating me, solving my

Regular hard work and minimum 4hours of self study are must. CCA, Dance,Music, Sports are all equally important to de -stress oneself and perform better. . My futureplans are to get admission in good engineeringcollege, complete my B.Tech in architecture, getsome job experience, do my MBA from IIMAhmedabad and set a mark in business. AfterB.Tech, I may go for IAS also.

Geetika Dhama, MRIS Charmwood

There were many things which helped me toscore 10 CGPA like support from my familyand teachers . My hard work and focus and myfriends who provided a helping hand wheneverI needed their help. I was inspired by myparents and teachers who kept motivating me .Their attitude and personality had always mademe try the things which I thought I couldnever achieve .Studying for two to three hourson daily basis helped me get a good result. Iwould like to tell my juniors that it is really easyto get 10 CGPA with hard work and I must tellthem that they should take their F.A.'s seriouslyas they have a major impact on our CGPA . Iwould also like to say that even if you study for1 hour, just study with complete concentrationand enjoy the studies . Enjoying is reallyimportant while studying because until andunless you study from your heart you can'tmake the best of it . I have opted forcommerce in 10+2 and then I am interested inlaw so I may pursue it . I have thought of manymore things . I enjoy poetry but would notlike to make it my profession . ‘Boards’- this very word fills almost all ofus with dread and aversion. Almost thewhole of our lives, we are told thateverything, right from our college to

our careers, is synonymous to what we score inour board examinations. Parents, teachers, aunts, uncles, and even our friends in the end lay somuch stress on these exams that we feel that togive these exams are what we are born for. ClassXII becomes the most dreaded classes, instead ofbeing the most memorable last year of school.Suddenly, all the aspirations of mum, dad, aunts, uncles, their family friends and god knows whodepends on us as we are given fairly constantreminders to score well in these exams. Watchingmovies becomes a sin, and becoming an unsocialcreature, who shuts up in his room and studiesfrom 4 am to 12 pm is what is expected of us.Family comparisons become the hallmark ofevening ( and later, afternoon, morning and nightsas well) and everyone you talk to has a very deepunderlying interest in what your future careeroption would be, as if you are his long lost child.Even if you are very determined as to what to doahead, your relatives at parties, weddings and allthe social occasions become very keen to thrusttheir knowledge about different career streams onyour head, whether accurate or not. Your familyfriends become superior to you, if they havechosen a stream like law or medical, and you wantto take up something like English Honours. Yourbest friends, who supported you through thickand thin, start eyeing you as their competitors andyour higher marks in internals threaten theminside out. Classroom gossips are replaced by studyplans ( often inaccurate to show that how less youstudy). Every word from your teacher becomesthe precious golden apple, which will guide youto the heights of life. So anyways, boards arerelated to a lot of uncomfortable, unexplainableand later, extremely funny incidences. As I wentthrough my first ( and thankfully the last) set ofboards exams, a lot of myths were decoded, and awhole set of facts came before me, which I wouldlove to share with my juniors ( and hopefullylessen somewhat of their trauma).

MYTHS BUSTED ‘Our whole career and life depends on

boards’. Absolutely false. A good score in Boards helps us getinto renowned colleges, but in the end, colleges are

just mere stepping stones of your career. Your caliber, hard work and right choices in the end can cover upfor poor score in boards.

‘Higher the boards’ percentage, moreintelligent you are’.

It’s one of the worst things I have heard about theseexams. It’s not necessary that the topper of the schoolhas the highest IQ. No offenses, but a lot of toppers Imet were more affluent in rote learning than actuallyunderstanding the text. For them, intake of knowledgewas limited only to what the course demanded ofthem. But yes, the most intelligent or not, boardstopper are definitely the most hardworking.

‘ You won’t be able to face anyone if youscore low’

Even if you flunk, you really don’t have to face anyonebesides your parents and teachers. Boards are justexams, and a low score should simply be taken as alearning experience. It’s not the end of life.

FACTS No matter what a big shot holds a workshop for

you and gives you tips on ‘what is expected tocome in boards this year’, please study everything!2013 exams were the proof that nobody besidesthe paper setters can tell you that what is to comein the exams.

Do not rely solely on the previous years’ papers.Consider them practice papers, not full proofguidelines.

Your friends may tell you that they don’t/ hardlystudy, but don’t base your preparation on theirsbecause at the end of the day, they are going to befar more prepared than what you expect.

Quantity doesn’t matter, but quality does. Youmay study for 10 hours a day, but still acquirenothing if your mind and heart is not into whatyou are reading.

Please don’t forget that class XII studies are notto pass the boards! Enjoy the subject, and derivethe most out of it. Each page is filled with stuffto equip your knowledge in the long run. Don’tjust spill the information out on the answer sheetand forget it forever. If you are truly dedicatedto your subject, the subject will never betray youin boards.

Annanya Gupta (10)with the CGPA system, there is lesser tension andstress. But the only way to score a 10 CGPA is tostay focused throughout the year and score well inthe Formative Assessments conducted.

Shobhna Awasthi (10)The biggest difficulty I had to face while preparingfor the exams was the pressure which I had inflictedon myself. My parents and friends always supportedme, and my teachers were always there for mewhenever I needed help. All this support from mypeople helped me perform better.

Sahil Madan (10)It wasn't tough for me to score a 10 CGPA ; all I hadto do was to get good grades in the FAs conductedand give my best in the extra curricular activities. My seniors, who had got such good gradesthemselves, were my source of inspiration.

Saloni Pasrija (10)It is because of everyone's support that I could getsuch good grades. I feel that the CGPA system hasmade scoring a lot more easier. Now, irrespective ofwhether you get 91 or 100, your grade will still bethe same.

Reya Mahajan (10)The secret behind my success was regular practiceand success. My teachers and friends supported me

throughout. In future, I want to do an engineeringcourse from IIT

Apurva Garg (10)I feel that the CGPA system still has many defects. There should be more divisions as the one who hasgot 100 is kept in the same bracket as the onescoring 91. However, the CGPA system allows us tobe more creative and we are judged on all aspects.Without the perpetual support from my family, Iwouldn't have been able to score this much.

Neha Shah (9.8) I feel that the boards with the marks would havebeen better, as we would have got to know the realmarks we secured. Scoring has become much easiernow. I want to take up non medical in class XI andpursue BTech later.

Nandita Mangla (9.6)I am in favour of the CGPA system as it has

eradicated the major differences in marks. I want topursue architecture after school. Without thesupport of my father and the guidance of mybrother, I wouldn't have been able to score as much.

Simran Thukral (9.4)CGPA system is a lot better because of the benefitof Scores Upgradation. For my grades, I would liketo give the credit to my dear parents, teachers andto myself ofcourse. I want to pursue a Masters ofScience degree in future.

Aayush Garg (9.4)For me, scoring 9.4 was very tough. Maths andScience are my weak subjects which really made ithard for me to obtain much marks. But because ofthe motivation of my teachers, I found success in theend. In future, I want to do Mechanical Engineering.

Ashima ( 9.2)CGPA system has helped me a lot to score better. For me, there is a simple way to get good marks. Ifyou are in X standard, you should study for 10 hoursa day, if you are in XI, you must study for 11 hours aday, and so on. Class X has been really wonderfulfor me and without the help of my teachers andparents, my grades would not have been thesemuch. I want to become a Software Engineer infuture.

Vardan Gupta ( 9) I would like to give a tip to my juniors, SSt was a loteasier in the previous class, but it suddenly becomestough in this grade. One has to pay more attentionto it than before. CGPA system is not favourableaccording to me, as the one who scores 95 and 99will have the same grades in the end. My motherand teachers are the reason behind my success.

Anjana Sharma is working as a PE teachercurrently in MRIS 21 C. She is incharge of allthe sports activities of the school. Born inHoshiarpur and brought up in Ludhiana,

Anjana’s first achievement in handball was when shewas in class V, when she played for her state, Punjab. After a break of 2 years from the game because ofpersonal issues, she returned to it when she was inVII std. In VIII, she played her first Nationals and thenshe continued representing the state till 2007, till sheshifted to Faridabad after she got married.

“Anjana is a very humble soul, and has thequality of perseverance which very few possess. Sheis an ongoing silent worker who believes inaccomplishing the task. As a PE teacher, Anjana isextraordinarily patient with the children and shemakes the children disciplined by focusing on selfdiscipline”, says Ikwinder Singh, Principle MRIS Sector21, who encouraged the sports star at all times eversince she joined the school.

Having heard about the numerous achievementsof Anjana Sharma, the image which formed in myhead was fully contrary to how the Sports Star cameout to be. The door opened and Anjana, holder ofvarious national and state awards in her game-handball, walked in. Her attitude was devoid of anypride or arrogance at her countless achievements; herfeet were firmly planted to the ground. Indeed, humility was the first thing about her that struck me.As I started the interview, her gentle voice made mewonder how this over achiever and PE teacher at MRISSec 21 disciplined the children, but as I proceeded withmy questions, she came about to me as a very strongwoman, extremely passionate about sports, whoindeed had the ability to instill the same vigor forsports in her children.

How long have you been with MR?My stay has been of a blissful 5 years. What are the awards you have won?My biggest achievement is Maharaja Ranjeet Singhaward, which is the highest in Punjab. Besides this, Ihave won many national and state awards wherein Irepresented Punjab, and have been honored by theUniversity of Punjab as well as Guru Nanak DevUniversity. What is the criterion of Maharaja Ranjeet

Singh Award?I had to fill in the forms, and the nominations for thebest took place. Points were awarded to eachcandidate as per his/her achievements in the past, andI made it to the merit list. My rank was 7 in Punjab. What sport did you get the award for?Handball, which is my forte. Who is your inspiration?Gurpreet Purewal is my inspiration. She is aninternational player in the same sport, and is currentlythe DSP of Ludhiana. Why did you choose sports as your

profession?I was good in sports, and my interest was at par with

my talent. Fot me, this reason was enough to pursuesports. Any hurdles which you had to pass while

choosing an ‘off beat’ profession likesports?

Yes, at that time in the state of Punjab and belongingto the Sharma family, girls were not encouraged totake up sports. We were pushed more into professionslike Accountancy and Engineering. Should sports be given more importance?Yes, sports should be made an essential part of ourroutine. In today’s stressed lives, sports are the biggeststress buster one can ask for. What role does MR play in your sports

career? Ikwinder Ma’am has been very supportive. She hasnever stopped me from going into any championshipsor competitions and forever pushes me forward toachieve new goals. Sanyogita Ma’am has also beenvery encouraging. Dr. OP Bhalla’s blessings give methe courage to achieve new heights. Who all would you like to give credit to for

your success? My brother and mother were the first ones whoencouraged my choice. Later, when I got married,my husband and dear in-laws helped me pursuesports and never stopped me from anything. Despitethe fact that I have a daughter, they never pressuredme with the big responsibility. If not without myfamily, I would have never even dreamt of going thisahead. What for you is a more powerful element,

fate or hard work?Fate does play an important role in life, but if youwork hard enough, nothing can stop you from gettingwhat you want.

Memories of school Educational trips are treasures which are alearning experience and they are a welcome break in theroutine for both students and teachers. While their purpose isessentially to educate in a recreational manner.Manav Rachna International School, Sector – 14, Faridabad

organized an educational trip to Indira Gandhi MemorialMuseum on 4 May, 2013 for the students of Grade 4 and 5. Thetrip carried fun, excitement and willingness to acquireinformation along with it. The trip had loads of interesting factsand findings especially for many of those who were visiting themusuem for the first time. Students got acquainted with thebelongings of the Indira Gandhi’s family. Students left themuseum with the feeling of appreciation in their heart towardssuch great leaders. The visit motivated students to learn moreabout such places of historical and political importance.

Adubious incident from the story ofQueen Victoria goes, when QueenVictoria received a guest who pouredtea into his saucer and drank from it,

she promptly did the same. Good mannersdictated that making her guest comfortabletrumped Her Majesty’s standards. In summer of 2009, Michaelle Jean, the

Governor General of Canada, ate raw sealmeat at Nunavut’s 10th anniversarycelebrations. She was criticized by much ofthe international press. As in Europe, that timethe opposition to the seal hunts was on a highand a ban on seal products was poised to gointo effect. The Governor-General was apparently

inspired by a visit earlier to a High School inRankin Inlet, where she met with youngstudents and asked: "What do you wantpeople in the south to know about you?", anda student responded: "The seal is our life; theseal is our way of life." Her attempt to inspirethe youth of her home country got her inpublic critics. Different times and different places but

both stories are about respecting other cultureand being cautious about your conduct, withgrace. Demising of good manners has become a

very common sight. Few of the biggestbugbears which we come across are: thosewho never bother to apologize for theirtardiness, those who never feel that it’simportant to place the chairs back in placeafter the meeting is over, those who never

bother to say thank you for a belated birthdaygift. The list is exhaustive, but the irony ofsituation is that what seems boorish to someseems perfectly ok to others.Display of good manners is not restricted to

addition of polite vocabulary in ourdictionary; it is a few steps ahead of that. Thesteps an individual takes to make the otherperson feel comfortable, as illustrated in theQueen Victoria’s apocryphal. Making otherpeople feel small is height of rudeness.Be kind, be gracious, be charming. Ask

‘Can I disturb you’, before asking a doubt orexpressing yourself after a long pause. Say‘sorry’ the next time you tramp on someone’sfeet. Don’t gaze at someone else’s attire, don’tgrudge, don’t be loud about other’s faults, walk the extra step to make people in yourcompany comfortable. Good manners, politeness is tax-free and does not changewith age, only gets more polished withpractice. Let’s not keep good etiquettes a part of

daily lesson for the growing kids alone, let’sadopt it! After all, kids learn the best fromwhat they see and do. There is reason whyIndian culture taught us the best form of noncontact gesture, Namaste! All it takes toexpress reverence is a little bow along withhands joined and fingers pointing your chin!Step ahead and do your part in building asofter society!

M aking one realize ones’ dream isyet another name foreducation. We at MRIS provide

all the facilities and opportunities for ourstudents to have ‘hands-on’ or liveexperience for their learning. We evenbelieve in giving International exposure toour students and in this endeavor weplanned an eleven days trip to KENNEDYSPACE CENTRE,NASA, USA where thestudents could actually see the launch padsand interact with the astronauts and peepinto their lives and see as to how theyactually live in space. The thought of travelling to NASA was

initself so exhilarating and welcoming, andthe cherry on the cake was when we sawthat the itinerary included Washington DCand New York along with Orlando. It wasfinally decided that a group of 33 studentsescorted by 4 teachers would undertakethe trip. The places visited were not only orderly,

serene and pollution free but the greeneryall around made the country more beautifuland placid and each one of us was motivatedto make an endeavor to make our countrylike theirs. The visit to Kennedy space Centre was

very knowledgeable and exciting.Thestudents were encouraged to take part in avariety of activities like exposure tosimulators, designing rockets, and actuallysitting in a dummy rocket and giving ordersto various members of the crew where each

one experienced as to how things functionin space. They also experienced the G forcecentrifuge, rocket launch in a simulator, crewcapsule design activity and many more suchexperiences. The students had a fun filledand interactive learning session with theteam of young budding astronauts and thequeries of each one was put to rest. Themysteries remained no longer mysteries andthe questions that we all had were answeredto our satisfaction. One of the most exciting and enriching

experience was to have lunch with anAstronaut Mr.Jim Reily where the studentsgot a chance to interact with him and havea first-hand information about his life stylewhen he was in a spaceship. Students wereeven motivated and guided to take upASTRONAUTICAL ENGINEERING asa profession which seemed very challengingand interesting. The content of STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Math’s) wasre-enforced. NASA visit and the activitiesdesigned helped the students to improvetheir skills and enhance their engagementwith STEM disciplines. It provided hands onlearning opportunities and professionaldevelopment activities. It was truly anexperience in itself and we feel proud andblessed to have had an experience like this.

REACHING FOR THE STARS …

Though I am not wanderlust bynature, however, when I was askedif I would want to go to USA, I

grabbed the opportunity with both thehands. One of the main reasons wasthat I always wanted to visit NASA andget hands on experience about the lifeof an astronaut. It was definitely an experience of a

lifetime. We visited Washington DCwhich enabled us to see many places ofhistoric importance like WashingtonMonument, the Capital, LincolnMemorial, Martin Luther KingMemorial, the White House etc. Apartfrom that I saw many museums andgovernment buildings. Florida offeredthe child in me to be free and enjoyDisneyland, The Universal studios andof course the Coco beach. Theunderstanding that the StudentAstronaut Experience Training offeredwas an eye opener for all those who feltthat the life of an astronaut was allglamorous and glitz, it made us realizethe hardships of the astronauts who risktheir lives for the welfare of humanityat large. The lunch with US astronautJim Reilly was another feather in the

cap. New York is a city that never

sleeps. From amazing museumsand art galleries to theater torestaurants to central park, everything about New York isamazing. It’s big, crowded, and fastpaced. At New York, we visitedone of the prestigious building“Empire State Building” from thespectacular lobby, all the way upto the majestic 102nd floorobservatory every inch of thisbuilding has a story to tell, Statueof Liberty the symbol of freedomand independence. The busiestand happening place Time Squarewas amazing.New Jersey was an enriching

travel experience, and gave achance to both the students andteachers to explore new culturesand people.India and the US are similar in

many aspects. The United Statesof America is a land as diverse andunique as its people like India. 'Ifvariety is the spice of life' thenAmerican society is most certainly

at the helm of the spice list.Americans are known to valueand respect their individuality. They possess a spirit that hasremained undaunted even in theeye of the storm of globalcontradiction. The people ofAmerica personify resilience andequality. They take their friendlynature to the next level and showgenuine concern for global issues.Punctuality is another importantvalue which Americans are knownfor. The country coined thephrase “Time is Money’ andobviously lives the phrase. This educational trip most

importantly helped in invokingmany life skills in the students likeself dependence, feeling ofbelongingness, dignity of labour, team spirit and a sense of pridetowards one’s own country.

“The journey of a thousand milesbegins with a single step”

T he school trip to the United States of America was trulythe most exciting and memorable trip I’ve everexperienced. With the group of 32 lively children who

made every moment so special with their zeal and enthusiasmthat we wished that this journey never comes to an end. Thebeautiful lanes of Washington DC and the history of Americanwars and the memorials built in the memory of great leadersand soldiers took us back to history and we were left amazed tosee the beautiful architecture.

The beautiful landscape and wide lanes of Orlandomesmerized each one of us. Visit to the Universal Studio andDisneyland took me 20 years back and I felt like a child enjoyingthe thrill and the excitement like all other children. It was indeeda different world altogether……..

After experiencing the simulation of a space shuttle androcket launch at NASA there was a new experience awaiting atNew York, the city of Skyscrapers. The high end brands spread allacross the streets of New York were so fascinating that all of uscouldn’t resist from shopping. We wished to stay at the TimeSquare all through the night as it was like experiencing day withlights all around. The street was bustling with young and happyfaces.

The entire experience cannot be summed up in few wordsbut will always remain as a wonderful memory in our hearts anda great learning experience for all of us.

The students alsovisited the Ground Zero which is the WorldTrade Center Site followed by a visit to TimesSquare, the crossroad of the world, it is thebusiest pedestrian intersection in the worldwhich was lit up beautifully, it is the heart ofNew York, endless life roaming in the streetsof Times Square in all times of day and night, surrounded by endless shops. New York is aplace where one could shop till they drop. The Statue of Liberty is a visit which could

A group of students from ManavRachna International School,Charmwood, Faridabad touredNASA and experienced the ‘Lifeof an Astronaut’ first hand.

W e, the students of Manav RachnaInternational School, Sector 14with our teachers went to oneof the most sought after

destination: THE UNITED STATES OFAMERICA. There were 33 students whowent on this trip along with 4 teachers –ourPrincipal Ma’am Mrs. Mamta Wadhwa, ourjunior coordinator Mrs. Monica Kathuria andour two subject teachers Mrs. Monica Kumarand Mr. Tanuj Sharma. We departed on 14thMay, 2013 at 4pm from the school andreached IGI terminal 3 by 5.30 pm. We allwere very excited, as we reached the airportwe met our journey mentor Ms. Aranditaand took our flight to Washington D.C. wereached our destination on 15th May.

Our journey started with a city tourof Washington D.C. On the very firstday we visited the Lincoln Memorial,White House, Capitol and thePresidential Memorial. The nextday we visited the SmithsonianNational Air and SpaceMuseum. Then we took a

flight to Orlando. Before we could actuallystart our educational two day journey wewent to refresh ourselves. We went to CocoaBeach which was a very beautiful beach andwe really enjoyed and we all had great funover there. There after we went to KennedySpace Centre (KSC). After being divided intogroups we enjoyed and experienced differenttypes of activities and micro gravity. It was anenthralling experience. We then made paperrockets and then the educators at NASA alsoexplained us about zero gravity and we alsoenjoyed various rides. The next day of KSCwe went on a bus tour, we got to see thelaunch pad sites, the vehicular assemblybuilding and other important sites within thecentre. The highlight of the day was lunchwith an astronaut and this is how our NASAtour came to an end and everybody reallyenjoyed these two days of knowledge and asthis was once in a lifetime opportunity.I would also love to record the time spent

in the hotel room with my roommates. I willnever forget cooking maggi in the middle ofnight, at times shedding tears when I missedmy mother and I also remember how on myshopping trip I forgot about the time in Indiaand disturbed my mother in middle of thenight just to tell her about the small gifts Ibought for my siblings. I will also rememberhow the teacher used to catch us in themiddle of night for not sleeping. I really missthe time when my friends were just a roomaway and how I spent most of the night chit-

chatting with them, surfing the net, makingprogrammes for the next day, painting ournails and selecting clothes for the next day.OH! How I miss those days.On the third day in Orlando we visited the

most adventurous and fun-filled location.Being in the Universal studios was like beingon an island of unlimited adventure. We wentto many rides and theme parks. The first ridewas an incredible hulk roller coaster. Itspiraled us around in a speed of nearly 105km /hr. We also went to see the stimulator ofSpiderman which was amazing. Then wewent to the water rides and we got drenched, but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The nexttheme park we went was Harry Potter’sforbidden journey ride. It was as if we were inthe magical Harry Potter world. After all thesewonderful moments we went to anotheradventurous ride called The Horror RollerCoaster. It was the most terrifying but themost amazing ride at the Universal Studios.Nobody in our group felt like leaving thisadventure filled experience. Those whomissed out on some of the rides definitelyhave a reason to come back and those whodid not miss anything , we are pretty sure wewill be BACK for more fun and adventure.Disneyland – the Magical world of Mickey

Mouse is a dream of every child to be a part ofit. As we entered the magical kingdom wecould actually feel the presence of DisneyWorld. I was mesmerized by the Disney parade.NEW YORK is the city of skyscrapers and it

is also called the city which never sleeps andindeed it is a city which never sleeps and wefeel extremely lucky to have got a chance tovisit one of the most amazing cities. In NewYork we visited The Empire State Building–the tallest building in Manhattan. It had themost amazing overview especially from the86th floor. We also visited The Statue of Libertywhich was on Liberty Island. Time Square isthe most happening part of New York city. Itis full of colour and activity.

I would like to thank our school and theschool management for organizing thetrip and parents for sponsoring us andour journey mentor Miss Arandita fortaking good care of us and ensuredthat we were all very comfortable atall times. All through the journey MissArandita was very supportive and herway of describing the places of touristinterest was superb as she made herdescription very lively and vivid. Those eleven days, the people, the

We, the students of MRIS Charmwoodl assembled at thenight of 12th May, 2013 at school from where we thendrove to the airport by bus. Our first stop once weboarded the aircraft was at the magnificient and grand

airport of Dubai where we did a lot of shopping. Then we flew toWashington D.C. where we did a city tour. We saw Capitol Hill,Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, White House and thecherry blossom trees which china had gifted to USA as a token ofpeace. The weather at D.C. was quite moist and it was slightly raining. The next day we saw the Smithsonian air and space museum. It wasvery big and had many kinds of planes in it.. Then we flew to Orlando . Disneyland. was a very interesting place

with many fun rides to try. There we saw many Disney characters likeLilo and Stitch or Minnie and Mickey mouse. The next day we wentto NASA for our SATX training. It was a lot of fun in the rotatorwhere they rotated us at 360 degree for about 3 minutes or so. Thenwe went for the spinning wheel where we sat in a seat and theyrevolved us around a ball and we had to throw a ball or Frisbee at theperson on the other end of the wheel. Then we went in to an actualcontrol room and we even did a mock launch with a rocket we madeout of paper. The next day we went to NASA visitor’s centre wherewe saw many real artifacts and models of rockets and shuttles. Welearnt about many types of problems that astronauts faced and thenhow they were solved. We also learnt about many tragedies and howthe astronauts died in them. It was a very sad thing to hear. Then wewent on to have lunch with an astronaut. We asked him a lot ofquestions and he answered them with quite enthusiasm. We caughtour flight and left for New York. We went for our city tour which wasquite interesting. We saw the Empire State building which was a verytall building. Now in place of ground zero two fountains are going tobe made in honor of the two towers which had crashed. We also sawthe Statue of Liberty through a ferry ride. It was very beautiful. Eachand every experience teaches a child life skills like adjusting, politeness, punctuality, and also to have lots of fun. This experience is a grandprivilege and I shall cherish it forever.

I played the role ofPAO (public affairs officer ) also we made small paper rockets andlaunched them. We did the trajectory chair exercise to know inwhich direction and according to what calculations rockets arelaunched and on what basis is their trajectory (path) decided. We metan astronaut and had lunch with him. We saw the rocket garden andthe Astronaut hall of Fame

SimranTrip to NASA with 32 students and three of my colleague was

“ T he word impossible doesn’t exist inhuman dictionary” is not anexaggerated saying. It is based on

the result shown by human endeavour. Winners always focus on mastering the

ability to accomplish. Once we conceive an ideaand back it up with strong belief, we candefinitely succeed. The term ‘Impossible’ itselfcomprises the word ‘I’ ‘M’ ‘Possible’, whichimplies nothing is here in this world that is notpossible. Impossible is considered as an opinionrather than the fact. It can be used in thetemporary sense as it is nothing permanent.

Every person who strongly believesthat anything is possible and can be achieved, isindeed inwardly optimistic who never allows, failures to come. There are numerous examplesfrom the lives of common people which enhancethe vision of possibility. Louis Braille was a blindeducationist who devised the touch system ofreading and writing for the blind. Helen Kellerwas both blind and deaf, but became an educatorof the blind.

How the degree of possibility could beraised to such an extent and lead to a greatsuccess which was completely impossible at thevery beginning of their life? It is nothing buttheir willpower, determination and confidence inachieving their goal. We are only making ourdestiny, shaping our life and deciding our fate.God has bestowed enormous powers andqualities on human beings. Man is the supremeof all his creations.

Every body is free to dream. Butdreams should not remain In our heads. Theseshould become a reality; otherwise they continueto live at the back of the mind forever trapped inthe midst of our thoughts. But how can one aimat fulfilling one’s dreams whose journey has beenfull of obstacles and failure? Obviously one willbe frustrated with impossibility. But here one

should remember that failure is the pillar ofsuccess. Some may experience passing through asmooth paved road as they move towards theirgoal. On the other had, for others, the road maybe quite a bumpy one, with frequent stops, missed exists and road blocks.

Circumstances may be adverse but itshould not deter us. Carlyle said that genius isanother name for the capability to take infinitepains. History of human civilization tells us aboutmany such great leaders and their efforts whichwere beyond imagination. It is nothing but thewillpower and the indomitable determination ofa person which makes impossible possible. Thestory of man’s progress from barbarism tocivilization is nothing but a story of hisdedication pitted against all hostile forces ofnature, which can be achieved by anyone throughcontinuous process of concentration on nobleobjectives.

Today, man has landed on the moonwhich was believed to be a god. With theadvancements in modern science and technologyand the conviction of man, the posterity will bewitness to how many inhabits the moon andprocreates the human race there.

Swami Vivekananda said the ‘karma candirectly lead one to supreme goal’. Dedicationtowards work is what makes the journey of life ameaningful endeavour. According to Sophocoles,‘Heaven will never help the man who will notact’. There is nothing impossible in thistechnologically advanced world if the efforts areon. The most important formula to makeimpossible possible, undesirable desirable, failuresuccess, fruitless fruitful, is by using the word‘right’. By taking the right decision at the righttime at the right place in the right direction, wecan reach the right destination.

From the fall of night,to the rise of day; Science is the only thoughtThat makes me sayI'll be a Scientist one day!

Though I know my thoughts do sway.but it's for sure the theory of pendulummotion, that foundations to it lay!For a matter of time science fills me withanticipation, the next moment it deprives me of oxygen...and feel like rushin' to the nearest station.

Be it anyway it's indeed my passion, although Mom believes it's mere myimagination.None on earth discovers my endeavour forcreation, the impulse that I get on hearin' "Invention"!

Sir. Einstien really got me amazed,at times when with anger my zeros I gazed..but now me is content,on knowin' the fact, thrice to suspension hetoo was intent!

Ouch! and my senses quivered with a slam, with those tonnes of books right o'er my head,BAM!I had been on my study desk since hours, learning laws of relativity....which not my brainregistered as yet,me now full of woes!

The time had flung,my neat, "blank" notebook still to my handclung,The dusk had now arrived......"next will be dawn!",I criedthen with a hope i smiled, and Up my desk I winded.

A ction embodied in one’s effort is the real key to success andhappiness. There is no success and resultant happiness withoutaction. You can derive satisfaction and happiness in havingdone your best even though the result did not turn out to be

as expected or desired. That is why it is said in the Gita ‘Do your duty, unmindful of the results’.No one can expect a very easy life and also a very successful one at

the same time. The rewards one gets in life are usually commensuratewith the efforts one puts in. It is astonishing what intelligent effort canaccomplish when channelised in the right direction. Success is not easy:If it was, everyone would be successful. However, the success ladder isnot as difficult to climb as it might seem. Each time we overcome anobstacle or solve a problem, the task we are attempting becomes easier, till finally what once looked impossible becomes routine. Countlessefforts by themselves, despite countless falls, imply the power to rise. When we are at the bottom of the ladder, the top seems inaccessible

and the obstacle at the top, insuperable. But they are not. The earlyconquests are the toughest. The more you succeed, the easier itbecomes to do so, till eventually success grows into a habit. Thus, success follows success. Nothing is impossible for a man with a purposeand a determination to persist with it. The world stands aside to let passthe man who knows where he is going and steps put with confidence, courage and determination. One of the ingredients that makes for success is hard work. But if

you like and love your work, you will never find it hard, tiring orboring, no matter how long you happen to be at it. Any knowledgeyou may acquire or any skill you may develop, will be the result ofconsistent effort. Of course, hard work is not the soul or onlyingredient in the recipe for success. There should be a purpose to allwork, and a worthy goal at which to aim and advance. Never venture, never win, no risk, no gain. Fortune favours the brave. In life, we haveto take bold decisions and take them quickly and thoughtfully. One more ‘mantra’ for success in life is : never be dogmatic and stick

and stick to a career linked to your academic attainments alone, if youfeel there are greener pastures for youto exploit you talent to yourfullest advantage.Loo, scores of doctors, engineers and etc., going in for the coveted

civil services with remarkable success; with some of them even goingfor the art subjects. The same hold true in the case of the youngbadminton sensation ‘saina nehwal’. Though only 18 years old, she hadearned the title of ‘The most Promising Player’. She has an endless listof achievements and now her name has been included in the top 10women badminton players of the world. Her determination has givenher the success, she enjoys today.

But to make impossible – possible, he stressed that individual’smental and physical well being plays a pivotal role. He congratulated thePrincipal and the staff alike for all the successful endeavors. Ms. Nisha Bhalla& Ms. Sanyogita Sharma also addressed the teaching staff on this occasion.

“I can fly higher than an eagle ‘coz you are the wind beneath mywings”… These are the lovely words of the song with which Principal Ms.Ikwinder S. Singh culminated her presentation and thanked all the membersof the management for their incessant support and guidance.

MEETING THE STAFFDr OP Bhalla visited MRIS, Sector 21 C, along with other dignitaries. Lord Krishna and Sudama’s

friendship is a classic exampleof genuine friendship. Joy and

Sorrow, Success and Failure, GoodFortune and Misfortune, are sharedequally by both the friends. Afriend in need is a friend indeed. One who stands by one’s friendsduring times of adversity is a truefriend. Selfless love is the very baseof true friendship, let us see how…A selfish friend is rich in words and poor in deeds, i.e. he is ahypocrite. He talks tall but when you are in trouble, he leavesyou in the lurch. In biology, there is a term given to animals that live

together in which one of the animals benefits from the otherwithout affecting the other, this is known as commensalism, there is also parasitism where one benefits and the other isharmed. A selfish friend is always after grinding his own axe;he does not care about your welfare at all .Therefore, a selfishfriend is at the very least commensals if not parasitic.True friendship involves self-sacrifice mutually. A true friend

foregoes pleasure and convenience. He goes out of his wayand faces difficulties in his way with joy and even with pride, indeed, a true friend will not feel burdened at the notion ofhelping you out, and instead, they will have a feeling of elationthat screams out “Yes! I was able to be of help to my dearfriend!” True friends shoulder the burden of life equally forthey feel that they sail in the same boat and that if the boat isto sink they have to swim together.

A friend in need is the medicine of life. He standsby us through thick and thin, in joy and sorrow. He seeks toinspire us and bring us great joy. He is always loyal andfaithful. He is never a victim of misunderstanding. A friend inneed is a true guide; he will guide us skillfully through thewooly maze that is life and will help us decipher out goal, something we cannot do alone.

Flattery and being a yes-man are not virtues thatbelong to a true friend, they are open and plain. A true friendwill openly tell his friend that they have gone on the wrongpath and strive to bring them back to the path ofrighteousness.

However, in today’s world of horror, a true friend israre. Indeed, Lucky is the man who has a true friend-a friendin need.3ws

During her course of study, Neha provedher metal by scoring more than 9 credits in allthe three semesters separately. In lieu to herexcellent performance, an equally promisingplatform was extended to her by MRIU in theform of international opportunity ofconducting her M.Tech Dissertation at Facultyof Technology, Lahti University of AppliedSciences (LUAS), Finland. She represented herUniversity and the country in InternationalSeminar held on 28th May 2013 where shepresented her research work before scientistsof different universities at Finland. She wonappreciation for her work and admiration ofher colleagues at Lahti University. Read abouther experiences in Finland:

The main objective of my master’s thesiswas “Enhancement of biomass and lipidproduction of microalgae in mixed populationsin waste water” which I carried out in LahtiUniversity of Applied Sciences (LUAS), Finlandfrom January 2013 to May 2013.

This Master’s thesis assesses the potentialof microalgae for waste water purification andbiodiesel production in single and mixedpopulations. The wastewater used in theseexperiments was pressed from mixture of newmunicipal organic waste and partly compostedgarden waste. The species that have beenchosen for growth during the experiments areEuglena gracilis, Selenastrum sp. and Chlorellapyrenoidosa and their various combinations. The experiments have been carried out at lab-scale and photobioreactors. Samples weretaken on a regular interval (3 times a week)for determination of growth (DW), growth rateand nutrient consumption. Microscopy wasused for calculation of cell concentrations(cells mL-1) in the end of the cultivation.

The experiments show suitability of the

single and mixed populations of strains to thewastewater in the laboratory scale and reactorscale. Results showed that biomass yield in themixed cultures was mainly lower than purecultures but there was enhancement in lipidproduction when E.gracilis and Selenastrumwere cultured together. However resultsindicate that cultivation in mixed populationscan reach higher lipid production but fatty acidprofile of E.gracilis is not optimal for biodieselapplications.

The working culture in Finland is one ofthe most precise and effective workingmethod, I believe. They plan their work in sucha way that they don’t have to compromisewith their time for family. There, people workin absolute details for every task and come upwith new and innovative ideas. They believethat even a small idea can be worth a try. Theresources in the labs were unlimited and theytrusted me with their expensive instruments. The labs were very well maintained and all theresearchers took special care about thecleanliness of the labs. An internal lab meetingwas conducted every Friday where theresearchers put their issues to theadministrator and they were solved by nextweek. The "Finns" are the most smiling andwarm people I have ever seen. They are alwayswilling to help others in every way possible.Fortunately, I was amidst people who acceptedme as a part of their culture and society andintroduced me to various aspects of Finnishculture. My supervisor, Dr. Silja Kostia, invitedme to meet her family and also was kindenough to teach me how to ski! Myimmediate supervisor, Ms Marika Tikka, alsohelped me a lot at both professional andpersonal fronts.

Lahti is a beautiful city by a lake and hasa small population. It was really interesting tosee people thanking the bus driver whilemoving out of the bus! The Europeans have animpeccable sense of timing and punctuality. Also, I have learnt to value people from everysection of the society. Socially, I believe I havegrown as an individual tremendously.

What lies behind you and what lies in frontof you, pales in comparison to what liesinside of you.- Ralph Waldo EmersonEver since we breathed our first on this

planet, we have been focusing on knowingnuances of the outside world. But little do weknow that more important than that, is toknow OUR true selves. We need to connectwith our own self before connecting withothers around us, because if we are notcomfortable and at peace with ourselves, wecannot be comfortable and with peace withanyone around us. Instead of asking others about what field we

should choose for ourselves, we should listen toour conscience, analyse our strengths andweaknesses and then set targets for ourselves. The following example might be clichéd, butits authenticity cannot be argued. DhirubhaiAmbani was a gas station attendant. Later, hewent on to found one of the major companiesof India. It was believed that excellence onlycame with experienceSachin Ramesh Tendulkar was 16 when he

entered the International cricket arena andhypnotized everyone with what he could dowith the cricket bat. He single handedly rockedIndian cricket.A farmer’s son, Bill Gates, was a school

dropout. His passion led him to formMicrosoft, which was the first company tobring the ‘computer’ to common peoplelike us. Even Albert Einstein, whose name is now

synonymous with ‘genius’, was a mediocrestudent at school, constantly rebuked by histeachers. Little did they know about hisintellect. He went on to change the way welook at Physics, giving us the Special andGeneral Theories of relativity among otherequally remarkable findings. All of these people are considered successful

by us. But what makes them so special? They had one thing in common. They

pursued their passion. Their journey wasn’t,obviously, a cakewalk but nevertheless theyachieved what they wanted. They listened tothe little voice inside their head and did not letthe dreams get clouded by what other peoplehad to say. They were never bogged down byothers’ criticism and had a clear idea of theirgoal and were determined to achieve it.Nowadays we worry about the cut-throat

competition for getting admissions in collegesof our choice and even the jobs we wish for. Isour worry justified? When we don ouroptimistic glasses, we see that there are a vastnumber of opportunities coming up in everysphere.

Be it the IT industry, the medical line, sports, business or even entertainment, for a strongwilled and hardworking individual, gettingwhere s/he wishes to is not very difficult. We should not just jump into the

bandwagon and blindly follow the trend, wherethere are engineers, chartered accountants anddoctors sprouting up everywhere. Ours is alucky generation to have so many fields openfor us.If we choose to do something we love, then

we never have to work in our lives! While setting our goals we should make sure

that we are pursuing something which we arepassionate about. We should live our own life and not a

borrowed one i.e. one inspired by what otherswant me to do and questions like ‘What wouldothers say?’Once we start understanding what lies inside

of us and we’re able to groom ourselvesaccordingly, the journey to success will bemuch easier .Once we are clear with WHY wewant to achieve something, our mind willautomatically lay out in front of us several ways,as to HOW to achieve it.

T o be very honest, it was my belief inmyself which got me through. Therewere times when I was down, really. But my wonderful teachers and

friends helped me get myself together.A big thanks to all my teachers, especially

my Principal, Ms. Sanyogita Sharma, whohelped me at every step, be it their expertise intheir subjects or their wise words. And ofcourse, my mother. For those endless mugs ofcoffee when I used to pull off all-nights duringthe examinations and for staying by my sideduring the ups and the downs.Just before the exam days, one of my cousins

suggested me this movie called Rocky. It starsSylvester Stallone. He plays Rocky Balboa, who'sa small time boxer and is considered a 'bum', anobody by his friends and other people. That doesnot deter him from dreaming big. He works reallyhard, faces all adversities with courage ,stands up onhis own feet, and is ultimately crowned the worldchampion. His strong will gets him through. It gaveme strength to work hard and inspired me to put in allmy efforts into my studies. So, Rocky Balboa was myinspiration! What I personally feel is that the number of hours put

W ith students away for summer break, it is the most ideal time for teachers torefresh their own learning and rejuvenate the scholar within. Hence, themonth of May was earmarked with a couple of workshops for the staff

members, organized at Manav Rachna International school, Sector 46, Gurgaon. The three day work shop ‘Dance in Education’ was conducted by ‘Project Meraki’

from 20th _ 22nd May ’13 for Toddlers to Grade 2.The workshop was indeed acomprehensive exercise which made the teachers understand, that how movement, danceand rhythm can be incorporated in classrooms to benefit children. If used well, it can be agreat tool for teachers to use it for students who have learning difficulties or have a dislikefor a subject. The workshop emphasized on stress relieving activities and the importanceof correct posture.

A two day self –defence workshop for the staff members was organized in the wake ofrecent increase in crime rate against women. Mr Mihir Mondal the Taekwondo instructorof our school facilitated the workshop. We were given hands on experience on varioustechniques which can be used against the assaulter . Stress was laid upon the fact thatdefending oneself requires confidence and presence of mind more than physical strength.

‘Inclusive Education ‘the most imperative requirement of the existing time was conductedby the team of special educators of our school. It helped the teachers to understand how achild can be identified through various symptoms and at the same time giving enough timeto the observations made by the teachers before coming to a conclusion. Sensitivity andempathy plays a vital role in dealing with a child with probable special needs.

Micro teaching was conducted by various subject teachers to share best practices adoptedin the class rooms. Workshops on Vedic Maths, Cybernetics and Edu-Comp were tooattended by the teachers.

The school intends to train its teachers well enough to enable them to impart theirlearning with students which is an amalgamation of technology and personal touch withcomplete preparedness and fervor.

Sport can be exciting, challenging and rewarding. However, thelegacy of sport is severely damaged, and the integrity of athletes isundermined, by the use of performance enhancing drugs and

doping activity. Anti-doping programs seek to preserve what isintrinsically valuable about sport. This intrinsic value is often referred to as"the spirit of sport", and is characterized by the values such as ethics, fairplay and honesty , health, excellence in performance , respect for rulesand laws among others. Doping is fundamentally contrary to the spirit ofsport. Anti doping plays an important role in sport. It ensures that allspectators and participants of sport are confident that the competition isfair and that the word 'champion' reflects the integrity of all the athleteswho compete.

Manav Rachna International University (MRIU) has been a pioneerin the field of sports promotion with the belief that clean sport is theonly real sport. MRIU has taken conscientious efforts in this direction byseeking the guidance of National Anti Doping Agency. NADA hopes towipe out the devil of doping from grass roots level. MRIU has taken upvarious research projects to educate young sportspersons about the ill-effects of doping. Also it has collaborated with NADA research projectsby deputing experts and trainees. MRIU is dedicated to creating novelsolutions to modern day doping issues in sports and competition throughresearch and evidence. NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERSAsugar substitute is a food additive that duplicates the effect of sugar

in taste. Now a day’s consumption of sweeteners has become aroutine among people. Everyone is using them without proper

knowledge and guidance. A study was conducted by Department ofNutrition and Dietetics, faculty of Applied Science on awareness andavailability of natural and artificial sweeteners and its effect on health inFaridabad district. Purposive random sampling was done and 100 subjectswere selected those were consuming sweeteners. The age group selectedfor the sampling was 20 years and above. A detailed questionnaire wasfilled and Market survey was done to find out the availability of naturaland artificial sweeteners in the market. It was found that availability ofnatural sweeteners was very less than the artificial sweeteners. Naturalsweeteners were not easily available in local markets. Non availability ofnatural sweeteners was one of the reasons for the consumption of artificialsweeteners by the consumers. Out of 100 samples 91% samples wereconsuming artificial sweeteners and only 7% were consuming naturalsweeteners. Various reasons of consumption were found to be diabetes, figure consciousness, weight management and for a healthy lifestyle.
