UPDATENOVEMBER 2017

A century ago, a small group of UBC’s earliest graduates formed an alumni association – known today as alumni UBC. At the first meeting, there were only 71 members on the rolls. Today, there are more than 325,000 UBC alumni, spanning more than 140 countries.

To mark their association’s 100th anniversary, alumni can choose from a suite of programs designed to involve them in the celebrations. A recent signature event was a stylish Welcome Home Party held during Homecoming in September. Billed as the “Party of the Century,” this food, cocktail and dance extravaganza sold out, with 500 alumni and friends in attendance.

There are plenty of other activities for grads to take part in – wherever they live in the world – to help us reach our goal of100,000 connections during the course of this year. For example, they can represent their location in our global network by adding a virtual pin and their profile to an online map. The tool also allows them to add a photo, share memories, or record and upload a short video message. Another anniversary program is “100 Dinners.” Alumni can choose to host private gatherings

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ALUMNI UBC / AVP, ALUMNIwith UBC friends living in their area, or they can search for open invitations (or set one up), which provides the opportunity to make some new connections. alumni UBC is supporting these efforts by helping with the event-planning and promotion. And, of course, there are still all the usual ways of connecting, such as taking advantage of career programming, joining our social networks, or volunteering.

I’m delighted to report that, only halfway through the year, we are already well on the way to exceeding our goal, with more than 66,000 connections made to date. This bodes well for the ultimate goal of our new five-year strategic pan, which became operational this spring: engaging 50 per cent of alumni annually by 2022, and doubling the number of alumni involved with UBC at a deeper level as senior volunteers, donors and advocates. Onwards and upwards.

HOMECOMING AND THE PARTY OF THE CENTURY

For once, a warm sunny day dawned for Homecoming, enticing more than 12,000 alumni, students and friends to come and experience the best of UBC. As well as the satisfaction of a convincing T-birds win on the football field, alumni had the opportunity to attend open houses, reunions, and absorbing workshops and presentations. They also enjoyed free admission to UBC attractions – from the Pacific Museum of the Earth to the Nitobe Memorial Garden – and an alumni BBQ kept them well-fuelled.

At the end of the day, executive director of alumni UBC Jeff Todd welcomed 500 alumni and guests to a lavish Welcome Home Party. Bolstered by a 31-10 win by the UBC Thunderbirds football team over the Saskatchewan Huskies earlier in the day, spirits were high. The party featured some of the city’s biggest culinary stars: Andrea Carlson (Burdock and Co.), Clement Chan (Torafuku), David Hawksworth (Hawksworth), and Angus An (Maenam), the latter a UBC grad who began his culinary training shortly after completing a fine arts degree at UBC in 2002. After tasting and sipping their way through a dozen stations, attendees kicked up their heels to Vancouver’s favourite house band, Dr. Strangelove, and enjoyed a selection of handcrafted cocktails at the Century Bar fronted by Grant Sceney, 2016 Vancouver Bartender of the Year.

GOAL 1 | BROADER ENGAGEMENTEnsure more alumni benefit from the collective resources of UBC and the global alumni network, and more students become familiar with alumni UBC.

UBC DIALOGUES: CAN WE RAISE CHILDREN IN VANCOUVER?

Vancouver has developed a reputation as a difficult place to raise kids. The high cost of childcare and the difficulty finding suitable housing have led many prospective parents to delay starting a family or explore alternatives, such as life in the suburbs. Given the challenges, as well as the risks posed by the proliferation of unlicensed childcare facilities, how can government, employers, developers and community groups work together to build a more child-friendly Vancouver? This was the question posed at the second instalment of this year’s UBC Dialogues, which drew 150 alumni and friends and was held at the Creekside Community Recreation Centre. Moderated by CBC’s Stephen Quinn, the panel included community and UBC experts – among them alumni Lynell Anderson, BCom’80, CPA, CGA, a public policy researcher and community engagement specialist, and Martin Guhn, PhD’09, an assistant professor with the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health.

TASTE OF KAMLOOPS: A BC CRAFT BEER EVENING

On September 28, Joe Wiebe, BFA’04, MFA’06, author of the BC bestseller Craft Beer Revolution: The Insider’s Guide to B.C. Breweries, hosted an evening of craft beer tasting at Red Collar Brewing in Kamloops. This sold-out program brought together more than 60 alumni and friends at the popular brewery, founded by David and Annamarie Beardsell, BEd’87. Attendees also enjoy guided tours.

GLOBAL ALUMNI NETWORK ACTIVITY

Recent programs in some of alumni UBC’s regional markets include a collaborative Alumni Pub Night and Canada 150 celebration with SFU in Ottawa in August; the first of our alumni UBC 100 Dinners in Quanghzhou; alumni gatherings in Beijing and Shanghai; and the annual Montreal Summer BBQ & Potluck in Parc Angrignon.

OKANAGAN ALUMNIGHTS

In September, alumni UBC hosted its third Okanagan alumNIGHTS at three locations in the valley: Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton. More than 60 alumni from both UBC campuses were in attendance, and senior student leaders were also invited this year in order to give them a taste of what to expect when they graduate. With a diverse crowd in attendance, alumni UBC staff facilitated a lively networking activity, and many meaningful contacts were made, including one between a student leader and a recent graduate who discovered their shared passion for entrepreneurship.

UBC OKANAGAN: CREATE 2017

Addressing more than 2,500 members of the Class of 2021 at this fall’s CREATE program, alumna Tara Cookson, BA’09, shared the power of saying “yes” to opportunities. For her, UBC Okanagan served as a gateway into the world, and the university’s Go Global program served as her mode of transportation.

Tara shared how saying “yes” while at UBC Okanagan took her on a path that included international research, writing her first book, and a Gates Scholarship at Cambridge. No matter where across the globe her work takes her, alumni UBC keeps her connected to UBC and to the Okanagan, where it all started. Watch Tara Cookson’s inspiring presentation here.

ALUMNI CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The alumni career development program continued throughout the summer with an online networking session and an alumnus-led webinar on “Leveraging the Mastermind Group,” (a group of like-minded professionals who support each other, provide mentorship, and collectively move each member of the group towards greater success). More than 100 alumni took part in these two programs.

A pilot six-week Career Agility online program also concluded over the summer. With the feedback received, some final tweaks were made to the program before it was marketed to alumni. Within days, it was fully subscribed, with 25 participants taking part in the first cohort and another 25 signing up for the waitlist. The second cohort will take part in January, and this offering will continue to grow. A new initiative is one-on-one career coaching sessions with a UBC Master of Counselling practicum student.

ROBERT H. LEE ALUMNI CENTRE

The Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre continues to be a major hub of activity on the Vancouver campus. This past quarter, the centre hosted 92 meetings and events, including a regional engagement session held by the Canadian Federal Ministry of Agriculture; a gala fundraiser for the Vancouver Writers Festival; and a UBC Day of Learning to remember and learn from the injustice of Japanese-Canadian internment 75 years ago during WWII, and to mark the 5th anniversary of the UBC honorary degree ceremony for the 76 Japanese-Canadian students expelled in 1942.

ALUMNI UBC ADVISORY COUNCIL

The fall meeting of the alumni UBC Advisory Council took place on September 15. Connie Fair was introduced as the new vice-chair, and the Graduate Student Society representative, Taran Dhillon, was welcomed to the group. Other new members include Alan Ehrenholz, AMS president; Trophy Ewila, UBC Student Union Okanagan representative; and new Faculty of Education representative Judy Halbert, MEd’90. Council members greatly appreciated having alumni UBC board members Randy Findlay, Barb Anderson, Valerie Casselton and Ross Langford in attendance. Dr. Helen Burt, AVP Research and Innovation, provided council members with an update on UBC’s innovation strategy. Members also had a lively discussion about current revenue streams for the alumni association and engaged in a blue-sky brainstorming session for revenue-generation ideas. The council will meet again in April.

ALUMNI BUILDER AWARDS PROGRAM

Created exclusively to commemorate the 100th year of alumni UBC, the Alumni Builder Awards recognize more than 75 alumni, representing all faculties, who have supported the work of alumni UBC and the University and enriched the lives of others. The recipients were selected by UBC faculty, advisory councils, and other leadership groups and will receive their awards at events held in various locations throughout the year. View the list of recipients here.

GOAL 2 | DEEPER ENGAGEMENTDeepen connection with key alumni, so UBC benefits from their voice, influence, skills and capacity.

ALUMNI UBC TRAVEL CLUB

Our biennial expedition voyage through Canada’s Northwest Passage took place in August with UBC study leader Professor Greg Henry and 20 travellers. Professor Henry’s research is focused on climate change, and he works in Arctic communities to help northern students understand and interpret observations of environmental change made by elders.

ALUMNI GATHERING WITH PROFESSOR ONO – LONDON, UK

On September 1, while in London, UK, to speak at the 2017 World Academic Summit, Professor Ono hosted an alumni and friends gathering. Barbara Miles provided welcoming remarks to the 38 guests in attendance, and Professor Ono shared an update since his last visit to London. The presentations were followed by a Q&A.

ALUMNI UBC BREAKFAST SERIES IN TORONTO

This September, alumni UBC launched a new breakfast series in Toronto, featuring successful local grads who speak to their career path after graduation. Attendees have the opportunity to ask them questions in an informal setting. On the eve of the Toronto International Film Festival, filmmaker Sidney Chiu, BA’02, hosted 17 alumni at the inaugural breakfast and spoke about his career in independent film production.
