REPORT ON THE INUAGRATION OF Y-V- 4 LEAD CLUB World Organ Donation Day Awareness Program on “Importance of Organ Donation” Organisers: Dr. Ngaitlang Mary Tariang Assistant Professor of Social Work, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) & Ms.Krishna Priya P S, MOHAN Foundation, Bangalore. February 11, 2020 Y-V-4 “LEAD CLUB” (Youth Voice For –Life Even After Death) Club, an idea that stemmed from an awareness activity conducted in Christ (Deemed to be University) Main Campus under the guidance of Dr. Mary Tariang on the importance of Organ Donation and Transplantation .This awareness session paved the path towards formulating the club that intent to empower students and general public with adequate knowledge about the importance of organ donation and to educate their role in spreading the awareness.Post rigorous meetings and multiple discussions the club emerged in the month of August 2019 with an objective to destigmatize about organ donation and in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization started to promote organ donation in 1997 in Chennai by philanthropists and medical professionals led by Dr. Sunil Shroff. In India around 6000 die every day waiting for organ transplant, every 17 minutes someone dies waiting for transplant, every 13 minutes someone is added to a waiting list. About 1,00,000 is the number of kidney transplant that are required in India every year. There is a huge need for organs. With such an alarming rate it is the misconceptions and lack of awareness that are the sole reasons. Through the Y-V-4 LEAD CLUB, the service-learning project of MSW students Christ (Deemed to be University) aims to address the myths, misconceptions and stigma towards organ donation through various awareness campaigns and activities.This initiative by Ms. Krishna Priya P S, MSW student and the transplant Coordinator MOHAN Foundation, under the supervision of Dr.

Information System),MOHAN Foundation, and Jeevasarthakathe organized their

first event on 16th of September Monday, 2019 at 1pm in Central Block CHRIST

(Deemed to be University), Main Campus, Hosur Road.

The event raised the flag with Organ Donation Procession that kicked off

from the main gate of Christ (Deemed to be University) that was decked up for

the day. The procession included student volunteers of Y-V-4 LEAD CLUB

from Masters of Social Work campaigning on the lines of ‘Be a thinker, be a

doer, be a donor, donate organs, change the ending to someone’s story’. The

student coordinators set up awareness booth thathad the research team working

on data collection and creating awareness throughbrochures and handouts.

At 12:45 PM the Y-V-4 LEAD CLUB had its official inauguration in

front of the Central Block by the esteemed guests of honourDr. Kishore Phadke,

Convener, Jeevasarthakathe and Mr. Sridhar Hanchinal Honourable director of

Mohan foundation felicitated by Dr. Victor Paul HOD, Department of

Sociology and Social Work. The event began with a prayer song by Ms.

Nithyashree followed by Dr. Rory Truell, Secretary General of the International

Federation of Social Workers addressing the gathering. The occasion was

blessed by the presence of other esteemed guests from the International

Federation of Social Workers, Faculty and the students of MSW.

The students of the Masters of Social work performed flash mob, mime and

street play as part of the

awareness campaigning.

They conveyed the message

on the importance and the

facts about organ donation,

they addressed the myths and

stigma that persists with

same. The event was a huge

success collaborating 100+ participants, students and coordinators working

enthusiastically and tirelessly towards the event. Ms.Krishna Priya, transplant

co-ordinator of Mohan Foundation delivered the vote of thanks and concluded

the event. The club looks forward in conducting more events both in

universities and taking its baby steps in raising awareness among the

communities and the public domain.
