Introduction

The Conmee Township Prospecting Project area covered by this

report was originally explored for iron. This area is the most

eastern part of the Matawin Iron Range. Pyritized magnetite-

jasper banded iron formation is commonly found here. Gold

mineralization occurs in this area where quartz veins are present

in the iron formation, in mineralized shear zones and in felsic

and intermediate intrusive rocks.

During a preliminary reconnaissance of the township, I

located an outcrop which was very gossanous in appearance due to

the high content of iron carbonates. This outcrop represents a

mineralized shear zone in gabbroic country rock. Further sampling

and investigation of this outcrop revealed the presence of

visible gold in quartz veinlets within the iron carbonates. Fire

assays of rock material adjacent- to the visible gold sample

returned assays of up to .19 ounces per ton gold.

Subsequent to this discovery, I staked a block claim of four

claim units in the area proximal to the gold showing for further

study. Heavy overburden covers the area making traditional

prospecting methods difficult as the outcrop exposure is less

than one percent. The results of this study indicate that the

mineralized zone which carries gold is probably narrow and

elongated, as are most of the mineralized shear zones of the

immediate area. Sampling of the gabbroic country rock further

supports this hypothesis. A program of overburden removal would

be very beneficial in determining the true extent of this gold

zone .

Location and Access

The Conmee Township Project is located in Northwestern

Ontario in Conmee Township of the Thunder Bay Mining Division.

The project area is located approximately 90 kilometers west of

the City of Thunder Bay. The mining claims covered in this report

are T.B. 963102, 964308, 94059B, 9B4307; portions of these now

form part of the block claim 1194226. The northern part of block

claim 1194226 is most easily accessed by Highway 11-17 from

Thunder Bay to Mokomon Road in Conmee Township. Access to the

southern portion of claim 1194226 is best accessed from

Concession number five from the south or from the Gold Lake area.

No roads traverse the property and the claim itself is diagonally

divided into two parts by a low, wet marshlands. Each of the two

parts are accessible on foot from Mokomon Road, but the traverse

across the marsh dividing the two parts is best made when it is

frozen.

Gold Lake is quite close to the study area and may be used by

float-equipped aircraft.

f\ n alternate route of access can be made by highway tt 1 02

CDawson Road) which runs through Kaministiquia then turning at

Sistonens' Corner and following highway 11-17 east three

kilometers. Some of the bush roads in Adrian Township in the east

portion may be of some assistance in gaining access to the most

westerly portion of the study area, but this is not recommended

due to the poor condition of the bush roads (winter access

roads).

Page 5: REPORT ON PROSPECTING AND SAMPLING · returned assays of up to .19 ounces per ton gold. Subsequent to this discovery, I staked a block claim of four claim units in the area proximal

Geology

The project area is near the Abitibi (Shebandowan Section)-

Quetico subprovincial boundary. The general area is underlain by

rocks of Archean age and are covered to a great extent by

Pleistocene and recent deposits. Some of this area had been

mapped by T.L. Tanton in the 1920's. Carter, 1984 describes the

study area as Keewatin-type metavolcanics, consisting

predominantly of a tightly Folded sequence oF ultramaFic, maFic,

and intermediate Flows. The study area Forms the most easterly

portion oF the Mattawin Iron Formation. Much oF the study area is

composed oF gabbroic rock and extensive zones oF jasper-magnetite

banded iron Formation. The Thunder Lake ault and the Mokomon

Fault are the major Faults oF the area.

At least three other gold occurrences are known in this area,

one oF which is associated with the intrusion oF a granitic stock

in the near vicinity. One oF these other occurrences was also a

visible gold showing. Gold reserves oF undisclosed tonnage and

grade are also evident here. Copper, silver and molybdenum are

also known to occur in the area.

Regolith From the immediate study area show the presence oF

Timiskaming type deFormed conglomerates and chemical

metasediments. Samples oF banded iron Formation with injected

massive sulphides have been Found-in the area which have not been

analyzed For their economic potential.

Page 6: REPORT ON PROSPECTING AND SAMPLING · returned assays of up to .19 ounces per ton gold. Subsequent to this discovery, I staked a block claim of four claim units in the area proximal

Work Done

Additional intensive traverses, hand stripping and rock

sampling was performed in the vicinity of the previous visible

gold showing. More rock samples were taken For visual analysis

with a 16 X hand lense From various locations throughout the

study area. Fire assays were perFormed on the best mineralized

samples.

A Further attempt was made throughout the area to try to

locate any Further outcrops oF material similar to that oF the

shear zone. A Focused attempt was made to locate any mineralized

regolith with the aid oF a sensitive metal detector. Tracing oF

surFace Float has been used in the past to help locate ore

bodies. A baseline was set up as a reFerence line For Field data.

Results and Recommendations

Traverses oF the study area indicate that bedrock exposure

here is oF very limited extent, typically less than one percent

exposure. The highest assay From the gold zone was .19 opt. Au

and a v isible gold sample was taken From an outcrop oF limited

extent. Rock units adjacent to the visible gold showing do not

run high gold values. The country rock gold values are typically

about 35 ppb Au. Rock sampling oF the surrounding area revealed

gabbroic rocks which are poorly mineralized.

Previously slabbed and polished regolith From the shear area

show hematized quartz veins Filling Fractures around clasts oF

altered maFic material (probably gabbroic). The dimensions oF the

Page 7: REPORT ON PROSPECTING AND SAMPLING · returned assays of up to .19 ounces per ton gold. Subsequent to this discovery, I staked a block claim of four claim units in the area proximal

r zone itself were undeterminable at this time due to heavy

overburden. There is a strong possibility that the shear zone

trends in a similar direction, subparallel to the Thunder Lake

Fault. Contours From magnetometer surveys tend to show somewhat

conflicting information for the trend of the stratigraphy.

However, the gabbroic material in the shear may suggest that the

shear postdates both the banded iron formation and the gabbroic

intrusions. The intimate association of the auriferous quartz

veinlets with the iron formation is apparent. The "uartz veinlets

may be located along the fractured fold noses of the deformed

iron formation stratigraphy. Nearby outcrops show extensive

fracturing with hematite veinlets infilling the fractures.

In the absence of foliage in the early spring, I w as able to

visually locate a minor fault which trends south-south west for

nearly one quarter mile. This fault intersects the location of

the visible gold showing. Further inspection of this feature is

warranted. (The VLF survey that I had proposed was intended to

locate the trend of this feature. The fault strike is traceable

as a slight depression along the ground.) Further work in the way

of overburden removal would be beneficial to further development

of this gold showing.
