Report on FDP –“Machine Learning with Python”

To meet the ever-demanding needs of knowledge industry, Faculty development programmes

(FDP) have always been an effective tool to enhance teaching and research capabilities of

educators. Aiming at developing competences in recent advances in Information Technologies,

New Horizon College of Engineering is conducting 5 days Level Faculty development program

on “Machine Learning with Python”. This Technical faculty development program is aimed as a

Research Frontiers in Machine Learning. This event is being jointly organized by Department of

Information Science & Engineering, Computer Society of India, New Horizon College of

Engineering and Free software Movement Karnataka (FSMK).

The campaigning process was starting from adding brochure to VTU website, sharing the

information via whatsapp to the academically reputed groups like Workshops/Conferences, Indian

Research Group, Vtu Shikshakara Balagavi, Nptel Course Groups,Wipro Talent Next Group and

other academic groups. We got very good response from academicians/research scholar and IT

professionals across the country.

Faculty from various organizations actively participated in the FDP. Naming the

organizations as follows,

National Institute of Technology (NITK)-Surathkal ,

Acharya Institute of Technology,

Atria Institute of Technology,

K S School of Engineering and Management,

Bengaluru Technological Institute (BTI),

CMR Institute of Technology, Punsuit Technologies,

University Vishveshwaraih College of Engineering (UVCE),

Oxford College of Engineering,

Ramco Institute of Technology - Tamilnadu,

Sambhram Institute of Technology,

Vemana Institute of Technology,

Ramaih Institute of Technology,

VTU PG Centre – Kalburgi,

New Horizon College – Kasturi Nagar and New Horizon College – Marathalli & New

Horizon College of Engineering.

The Inaugural ceremony of Faculty Development Programme was conducted on 7th January, 2019

at Falconry Seminar Hall, New Horizon College of Engineering, with the invocation song followed

by Lighting the lamp by the Chief Guest, Dr. H C Nagaraj, Dean- Research, VTU and Principal

of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore. A warm welcome speech was delivered

by Dr.R.J.Anandhi, Head of Information Science and Engineering Department. Dr. Prashanth

C.S.R, Dean Academics, highlighted the significance of Machine Learning and its applications in

the industry and academics. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Manjunatha, Principal,

New Horizon College of Engineering in which the significance of industry-institute interaction

was highlighted so that the faculties and students will be exposed to recent developments and

innovation in the industry.

The Chief Guest, Dr. H C Nagaraj, gave a motivating speech to all the Faculties on teaching

learning process and life long learning and its importance in his inaugural address. The guest of

Honour and the Resource person Mr.Guruprakash Sivabalan, Founder & Chief Executive

Officer of Xobin Technologies Private Limited, Chennai explained about machine learning, a

cutting edge technology and the agenda for the 5 days FDP. The Course material on Machine

learning with python was released by the dignitaries. Participants from various Engineering

colleges have registered and will ripe the maximum benefit from this session. The Inaugural session

was succesfully concluded with Vote of Thanks by Dr. S.Mohan Kumar, Associate Professor,

New Horizon College of Engineering.

On Day 1 contents covered are Introduction to Machine Learning, Issues and Case studies,

Descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics which is most essential for any learning algorithms.

The last session covers Introduction to Python and problem solving in python.

On Day 2 Session 1and Session 2 continues with problem solving using python followed

Hackathon in Python using Xobin bootcamp online platform. Session 3 and 4 covers Pandas for

handling real dataset, Numpy for using mathematics library and Matplotlib for visualization using

Jupyter notebook. For each of the content trainer solved one case study followed by second

problem to be solved by the participants. All participants completely engaged with Python

Hangover.

On Day 3 Session 1 and 2 covered Randomized Algorithms for predictions, Binarization

of the dataset, Confusion matrix and performance metrics for predictions like precision, accuracy

and recall. Session 3 and 4 covers Linear regression, logistic regression and Multivariate regression

for Raw Datasets and Actual data sets.

On Day 4 Session 1 Covered Percepton which is a modeling of Human Brain Neuron and

all are implemented with different datasets and observed the behavior of the Perceptron. Session

2 Covers most powerful classifier Naiive Bayes for different datasets. Session 3 and 4 covers

Support Vector Machine and K Nearest Neighbor classifier with case studies.

On Day 5 , Concept of Back Propagation,Linear Vector Quantization (VCQ) Principal

Component Analysis, Natural Language Processing / Text Mining using Tensor flow and

Recommendation Systems / Sentiment Analysis using Tensorflow.

For all the algorithms covered it was a complete hands on and engaged all the participants

for all 5 days. It was like 80 % Hands on and 20 % theory and had a flavor of Internship also.

The FDP was concluded by the valedictory function conducted on Day 5 afternoon 3.30, at

Falconry Seminar Hall, New Horizon College of Engineering. The session started with the

welcome speech of Mrs. Kavitha K K, Assistant Professor, ISE Dept. She gave a warm welcome

to the gatherings and to the dignitaries, Dr. Prashanth C.S.R, Dean Academics, NHCE, Dr.

R.J.Anandhi, Head of Information Science and Engineering Department, NHCE and

Mr.Guruprakash Sivabalan, CEO, Xobin Technologies. The overview of the FDP was delivered by

Mrs. Vandana C P, Senior Assistant Professor, ISE Dept. Few participants shared their wonderful

experience during the FDP. Participation certificates were distributed to the participants by the

dignitaries. The valedictory function ended by the Vote of Thanks by Mrs. Kavitha K K, Assistant

Professor, ISE Dept.
