REPORT ON A HELICOPTER-BORNE MAGNETIC AND ELECTROMAGNETIC SURV1Y

Airport, Post Creek, Hess 6 and Foy Poperties Sudbury Area, Northern Ontario

l. INTRODUCTION

Tlus report describes i hclicoptct-borne geophysical survey carried out on behalf of l.Y Minearls Jnc on several claim blocks in the Sudbury Area, Ontario

Principal geophysical sensors included AeroQuesl's exclusive AeroTEM0 six channel Time domain helicopter electromagnetic system and a high sensitivity cesium vapour magnetometer. Ancillary equipment included a OPS navigation system with OPS base vi alio 11, radar altimeter,

r, and a base station

This report describes the survey, the data processing and presentation. EM anomalies were picked and graded according to tl\e number of channels of response. A late time resume (in the later channels^channel 6 being the latest) indicates a better conductor. A list of EM picket! EM anomalies may be tound in the appendix

2. SURVEY AREA

The regional and local settings of the survey area are shown in figures 1-6

The Post Ctcck claim block lies in Parkin Township, Sudbury Mining Division, rou^nly 10 km northeast of Capreol, Ont. The block is centred at latitude 46*4874 and longitude 80"5;vw NTS shrci* covering the survey urea is 411/15 and the Mining Land Tenure map is (i-ZVl 5.

Nominal EM bird tcrraon clearance was 2S mcucs (75 ft). The magnetometer icnsor ,vas mounted in a smaller bird connected to the tow rope 2 1 metres above the EM bird an M 7 metro below the hebcopter. Nominal survey speed was 75 km/hi. Scan rales tor data acquisition was O l ^econd tor iVw magn^omew, decuomapnetics nnd altimeter and l .0 second tor i lie (jPS deienuiiicd positwiv This iiamlate* lo a ^eopliyiicjl reading about every 2 metre;- al^ng flight track.

Navigation was assisted by a GPS receiver and the RMS data acquisrtion system whj' h nsports OPS co-ordmaies as WGS-84 UtimdeAongiiude and directs the pilot over a pre programmed survey grid The x-y-z position of Ihc aircraft, as reported by the OPS, is recorded a' one second intrrvfOs. The GPS positions were differentially corrected in. real-time using the RAC XL saieUite bused system.

Unlike frequency domain electromagnetic systems, the AcroTkM*' system has negligible drift Jje to thermal expansion and therefore high altitude zero calibration lines are not required. The inherent static offset is removed by identifying areas of no response and employing local levelling Unes.

The operator was responsible for ensuring the instrument was properly warmed up p'ior to departure and that the instruments operated property throughout the flight He also maintained a detailed flight log dta mg ilic survey noting the times of the flight as well as any unusual isophysical or topographic features.

On return of the aircrew to the base camp, the RMS acquisition svstcm survey data (*n was downloaded to the data processing work station The MDAS recorded data on Ia?^Disk was aJso downloaded to the processing station for back-up purposes. In-ncld processing included Qiitht preparation, transfer of the RMS axxuiired data to Geosoft GDB database foiniat and production of preliminary EM, magnetic contour, and flight path maps. Survey Lneit which showed excessive deviation after differentia) correction were reflown.

The electromagnetic system employed was an AeroQuest AeroTbM0 Time Domain lowed bird system It is currently the only commercially available helicopter TDEM system vising a coincident Tx-Rx loop combination. Six channels of the off-time EM decay are mea'ured in two components , i.c the x and z directions. Although both x and t components of the d icay field were recorded, only the z component data is presented in the final maps (although x: appears in the stacked profiles) The transmitted waveform is triangular with a base frequency of l ^0 Hz., yielding 300 decays per second- The Transmitter Dipole moment is 48,000 NTA Tlie AeroTEfv^ l.-tvc! ^.i1;, I'.u.c'J I-S iuou'i s (i- 1* \\) btlow i!\; hcliuupicr Muu- icchim-ul delays of U': ^ybiciu m:i) be found in the tedinical paper in the Appendix

4.3 Magnetometer

The Aeroquest airborne survey system employed the Geometrics G-822A cesium va| tour magnetometer sensor installed in a two metre towed bird airtoil attached to the main tow line. 17 meires below the helicopter. The sensitivity of the magnetometer is O 001 nanoTesla at a O l second sampling rate The nominal ground clearance of the magnetometer bird was '\1 metre.1; (167 tt.).

6. DELIVERABLES

The survey a described in a report which is provided in three copies. The report includes a set of four flight path/geophysical maps. Ajl the maps show the flight path trace with time reference fiducial* marked al on appropriate uitci val

The underlying topography was obtained from the digital topographic database series (OHM) published by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resouces and commercially available through

t Data Services, Toronto

The basic map coordinate/projection system used is NAD 27 (Canada Mean) Univenal Transverse Mercator Zone 17 For reference, the NAD27 latitude and longitude are also noted on the maps

The following table describes the map products accompanying the report:

7. DATA PROCESSING AND PRESENTATION

7.1 Base Map

The geophysical maps accompanying this report are based on positioning m the Canada Mean local datum ot NAD27 The survey geodetic GPS positions have been map projected using the Universal Transverse Mercator projection .in /-one 17

7.2 Flight Path Muo

The position of the survey helicopter was directed hy use of OPS satellites with (he HACAI. real-time differential correction The recorded flight path was converted from WOS 84 daturn latitude-longitude into the local UTM co-ordinate system using the NAD27 Canada Mean datum The flight path w drawn using linear interpolation between x,y positions from the navigation system. Positions are updated every second and expressed as UTM listings (x) anci UTM northings (y).

The time reference fiducials are drawn on the map at appropriate intervals and arc u cd to reference the data filr to the plan inap

7.3 Ekctronngnctk Data

A two stage digital filtering process was used to reject major sferic events and to re-luct system noise.

Local sferic activity can produce sharp, large amplitude events that cannot be remox-ed hy conventional filtering procedures Smoothing or stacking will reduce '.heir amplitud but leave a biOodci jciiJual lopujiic that can be confute J with geological phejtomcna. To avoid tlus possibility, a computer algorithm searches out and rejects the major sferic events. The filter used was a 0.8 sec non-hnear filter.

The signal to noise ratio was further improved by lit applkation of a low pass linear *]igjial filler This.fther has zero phase shift which prevents any lag or peak displacement from occurring, and ii suppresses only variations with a wavelength lej.i than about 2 seconds or 40 metres. This filter is referred to as B 2.0 sec linear filter.

EM anomalies have been manually picked from the analogue profiles. Each anomaly has been given a letter label and is graded according to the channels in which the- anomaly is di icetnible ami the direction of the excursion, either positive or negative A listing of these AnoniaJK i rruy bc (bund in the appendix.

The EM channels have been levelled to remove Jhe residual //ero offset.

7.4 Magnetic Data

The aeromagnetic data were corrected for diurnal variations by adjustment using the magnetic base sthUon and and, where necessary, the intersections of the tie lines. No corrections for the regional reference field (IGRF) were applied. The corrected profile data were interp. dated on to a grid usjing a random grid technique. The cell sue was 10 metres tor the L 10,000 grv.l. /vny levelling errors still apparent in th? magnetic grid were removed by micro-levelling w hich involves the use of a frequency domain directional fiker. The final levelled grid-provided the basis for threading the presented contours. The minimum contour interval was 10 nT.
