REPORT OF THE ZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION
AND
DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES
The election of the office bearers for the zoology association, 2018 -2019 was held on 20th June
2018.
Athira Menon T of 3rd DC was elected as the association secretary.Anna Susan Roy was elected
as the 1st DC representative,Jomol Joshy as the 2nd DC representative, S.A.Marathakarani as the
3rd DC representative and Kavya Anilkumar aa the P.G representative. Dr.Helvin Vincent and
Ms.Cynthia Mathew Thalathil were nominated as the staff advisors of the association.
INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION AT BHARATA MATA COLLEGE,THRIKAKKARA
As part of the environment day celebrations, intercollegiate competitions were held at Bharath
Mata College ,Thrikakara on 5th June 2018. Students of our department participated and secured
prizes. Sreenandana B of 3rd DC won the first prize for painting competition. K.A Vaani of 3rd
DC and Aneeta of 2nd DC won the 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively for the essay competition.
INTERCOLLEGIATE QUIZ AT MORNING STAR COLLEGE, ANGAMALY .
Our students participated in an intercollegiate quiz on environment with special emphasis on
plastics which was held on 19th June 2018 at Morning Star College, Angamali.
INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION AT AL-AMEEN COLLEGE EDATHALA
Four students from the Zoology Department participated in the intercollegiate competitions and
seminar on plastic pollution held at Al-Ameen College,Edathala on 25th June 2018. Navina
Mable Francis of 3rd DC won 1st prize for poster designing. Athira Menon T and Parvathy K.R
of 3rd DC won 3rd prize for quiz competition.
DBT - STAR college scheme
Two seminars were conducted as part of the DBT - STAR college scheme.
1. SEMINAR ON GENOMIC DNA ISOLATION
First seminar was on Genomic DNA isolation, conducted on 21st June 2018 for the 3rd
B. Sc.
Zoology students.The resource person was Dr.Anju .T.R, Assistant professor of Department of
Biotechnology ,Newman College.
2. SEMINAR ON ELECTROPHORETIC TECHNIQUES
The second seminar was on Electrophoretic techniques , conducted on 28th June 2018 for the 3rd
B. Sc. Zoology students. The resource person was Dr.Smitha, Assistant professor of Department
of Zoology ,Sacred Heart College,Thevara.
REPORT OF INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON “EMERGING TRENDS IN
BIOPHYSICAL RESEARCH AND CURRENT CHALLENGES IN ARTIC SEA
MONITORING”
The Zoology Department hosted an International Seminar on “Emerging trends in biophysical
research and current challenges in artic sea ice monitoring, on 13th
July, 2018. The seminar was
formally inaugurated by Dr.VishnuNandan, Scientist, Cryosphere Climate research group,
University of Calgary, Canada by handing over a sapling symbolizing life to Principal Dr.
Sajimol Augustine.
The seminar had four sessions handled by four eminent resource persons. The first session was
the keynote address by Dr.VishnuNandan, Cryosphere Climate research group, University of
Calgary, Canada. The topic handled was “Diminishing Artic sea Ice: Why should we care about
it? Current challenges in artic sea ice monitoring. The various research options in Cryosphere
Climate research was also discussed.
The second session was addressed by Dr. Anu Gopinath, Assistant Professor, KUFOS on
“Organic matter characterization from Artic Fjord sediments.
“International cooperation in Artic Research –Opportunities and Challenges” was the topic of the
third session delivered by Dr. K Ajith Joseph, Executive Director, Nansen Environmental
Research Centre, KUFOS, Amenity Center,Kochi.
The final session was handled by Dr. Nandini Menon N, Senior Scientist, Nansen Environmental
Research Centre, KUFOS, Amenity Center, Kochi on “Remote Sensing and marine
phytoplankton –An introduction.
The seminar officially marked its end by a note of thanks by Dr. Meera Jan Abraham, Associate
Professor, Department of Zoology.
ZOO FEST IN BMC COLLEGE THRIKKAKARA ON AUGUST, 2018.
The students of zoology department of St Teresa’s College participated in the zoo fest 2018
conducted by zoological society of Kerala held at
Various competitions were conducted for respective years and a single group event was
organized. A total of 25 students participated from our department out of which there were 9
students from third year, 10 students from 2nd year and 6 from 1st years. The students received
prizes for various competitions.

The overall trophy was bagged by BharataMatha College, followed by St. Teresa’s College and
Sacred Heart College which secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
Department of Zoology Hosted an Inter- collegiate Quiz Competition - The
Rosalind memorials quiz competition organized by the dept. of zoology, St
Teresa’s college, in association with the rotary club, ERNAKULAM was
held on Thursday 9th
august 2018. Students from various colleges
participated.
The preliminary round started around 11:30am, which was organized by Mr.
Renjith. After the preliminary round 6 colleges were selected for the main quiz
which was conducted by Mr. Ajimon who was the quiz master. The quiz had seven
rounds. The winners were Mahatma Gandhi university, Kottayam, 2nd
prize was
secured by Maharajas College and 3rd
prize by Christ College, Thrissur.
The valedictory function was held at 2:30pm and Rev. Sr. Dr. Vinitha was the
chief guest and she handed over the prizes to the winners.
