Gonzaga University Report of the President 2012-13& Donor Recognition

  • Gonzagas 125th Anniversary in 2012-13 surprised and inspired

us. This year-long collection of events originated as an important

opportunity to reflect on Gonzagas many wonderful traditions and

to marvel at its ongoing transformation. And so we honored our

Jesuit and Native American Indian roots, as well as the intertwined

history and growth of the University and the little hamlet by the river,

    once known as Spokan Falls.

Almost as soon as the year had begun, we honored our heritage with

two significant events: the annual Pilgrimage to the Mission of the

Sacred Heart at Cataldo, Idaho, and the Historic First Day of Classes

celebrated precisely 125 years to the day that Gonzaga began

to educate students. The Zagapalooza All-Class Alumni Reunion

brought thousands of Zags back to campus in October, honoring the

University with their affection and high regard, and giving us a chance

to do the same. Throughout the festivities we shared stories of a

University that is so clearly on the rise, an institution committed to

its faith, its intellectual mission, and the critical work of transforming

men and women for leadership and service. Gonzaga has created a

national presence that is due to our intentionality and vision, and we

    continue to build on three core elements: our academic excellence;

    our emphasis on a community of care, concern, and responsibility;

and our network of alumni and friends encompassing far-reaching

resources that nurture our students on their path into todays

    complex world.

During this historic year, Gonzaga called upon world-class

perspectives for our students welcoming Archbishop Desmond

Tutu as the 2012 Commencement speaker; three-time Pulitzer Prize

winner Thomas Friedman; Sir Ken Robinson, renowned futurist

and creativity guru; and in April, Jane Goodall, the world-famous

primatologist, to round out our Presidential Speaker series.

    PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

No. 1 in the Peace Corps, No. 1 in

    basketball: Gonzaga has created

a national presence that is due to

    our intentionality and vision.

    Thayne M. McCulloh, President

  • Midway through the year, as 10,000 Zags celebrated our first National Gonzaga Day, we turned to

consider this Universitys capacity to establish a strategic future. On National Gonzaga Day, I shared our

vision for a new University Center a portal to the world, a game-changing facility, designed to nurture

an integrated education that encompasses learning in and outside the classroom. In a move pointing to

our future, the placement of the Center for Global Engagement at the heart of this new Center locates

the hub of international education at our very core. In April, the Board of Trustees approved construction,

    which begins in Fall 2013.

The University recognized in July 2013 the largest single gift in Gonzagas history $25 million given

by longtime friend, supporter and Trustee John Hemmingson. It is a gift we receive with profound

gratitude. Such generosity augurs well for Gonzagas hope that a spirit of philanthropy will make possible

this all-important facility, allowing the University to move forward without further financial encumbrance.

Amid the good news, we recognize that a great deal remains at stake: foremost, an imperative that

Gonzaga ascend to a new level of excellence in national and international Jesuit education. Our Catholic

foundation supports a community filled with a genuine commitment to advancing knowledge in the

service of faith and the culture. At a time when economic disruption and changes in public attitudes

have placed many universities under duress, Gonzaga has positioned itself in a stance of opportunity:

We continue to attract highly impressive students, both undergraduate and graduate; we continue to

explore opportunities for development of new, competitive programs; and we continue to search for and

    hire brilliant faculty and staff.

As we look to the coming year, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gonzaga-in-Florence. Firenze

represents the foundational experience of cultural and spiritual exploration that has transformed

more than 6,000 lives. We are deepening our network of international university partners, affording

every opportunity to students. Finally, as is fitting today, our faculty is working to imbue international

perspectives and sensitivity to global issues across the curriculum.

All of these components allow us to claim a place at the forefront of higher education today, and will

continue to enable us to become a beacon to other universities that hope to offer an integrated educational

experience. With your help and generosity, we are reaching toward the next level of excellence and we

are grateful. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

When the heart is touched by direct experience, the mind may be challenged to change.

Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, Superior General of the Society of Jesus 1983-2008

  • 2012-13 YEAR IN REVIEW

    One (& only)

    Gonzagas School of Engineering

    and Applied Science rose 10

spots to become the 17th best

    undergraduate engineering

    program in the nation.

Gonzaga is the only private regional university in the West named to a

new operating-efficiency list published by U.S. News & World Report,

featuring schools that produce the highest educational quality for a

    relatively low price per student.

85 students, one award: The KEEN Living and Learning Community in Goller Hall opened in September 2012 with 85 engineering and computer

science students in residence. The Kern Foundation gave Gonzaga an

Outstanding Award for the program, which offers entrepreneurially

oriented tutoring, speakers and dinners as well as other community-

    building support.

In May, Gonzaga received $1.2 million from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, its second grant from the biomedical- and science-

oriented philanthropy. Four years in duration, the grant strengthens

Gonzagas sciences. Freshmen learn through conducting their own

research; and science majors deepen their understanding by teaching

    K-6 students.

Engineering students took the top two awards in the September 2012 Innovation Chase Competition in Chicago and then hosted the

next competition in April 2013. The Innovation Chase tests teams on

projects involving engineering, entrepreneurship and design.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Gonzagas graduate accounting

program the 14th best specialty accounting program nationwide. Ninety percent of graduates find employment within six months.

  • Led by the Guy and Madeline Ossello family,

12 donors came together to create the gracious

new Gonzaga Grotto, located between College

Hall and St. Als Church. Dedication of the Grotto

occurred in October 2012, during Gonzagas

    125th Anniversary all-class reunion.

  • 2012-13 YEAR IN REVIEW

    328The 125th Anniversarys Pilgrimage drew a record 328 students,

faculty, staff and friends of the University for the 11-mile walk to the

historic Mission of the Sacred Heart at Cataldo, Idaho.

A record-breaking number of students 2,020 total participated last year in University Ministry programming, worship

and retreats. A new retreat held in February focused solely on men

    and mens spirituality.

The Pursuit of Justice Conference in April attracted internationally

and nationally recognized speakers. The project emerged from

a collaboration between Gonzaga School of Law, the Gonzaga

Institute of Hate Studies, and the Washington State Task Force on

Race and the Criminal Justice System. The three-day conference

marked the 15th anniversary of the Institute for Hate Studies.Gonzaga was selected to host the international Opus Prize, a

leading faith-based, humanitarian award, in October 2014.Gonzagas Center for Teaching and Advising, with visiting scholar

Pat Hutchings, launched the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Initiative, allowing 12 faculty to investigate their own teaching and their students learning as research projects.

    Gonzagas Trustees signed a rewritten

    Mission Statement in Febrauary 2013.

While the roots of the mission remain

unchanged, the new version of the

statement is 140 words, down from

654 words. GUs first formal mission

    statement was enacted in 1979.

  • Planning for one of the most significant buildings in Gonzagas

history became an integral part of our work in 2012-13. Multiple

activities will draw students into the John J. Hemmingson University

Centers four levels and 167,000-plus square feet: Exploring faith at

University Ministry, and international conversations in the Center for

Global Engagement. Finding services for veterans and non-traditional

students. Seeking out the new Terry Payne Center for Experiential

Leadership. Serving others through the Center for Community

Action and Service-Learning. Building friendships and breaking bread

at several dining options. Learning from the buildings sustainable

ecology. In short, this globally-oriented portal will create a Gonzaga

    experience for the 21st century.

    56

167K THE JOHN J. HEMMINGSON UNIVERSITY CENTER

    Vision:

The Hemmingson will transform delivery of a contemporary,

rigorous and relevant Jesuit education. As students discover and

take advantage of the offerings found in this campus hub, they will

come to understand that these are all elements to incorporate into

their life journeys. Gonzaga provides such holistic development for

    its students.

    The Hemmingsons advanced heating

and cooling system will utilize the

    Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie

    Aquifer 56 degrees, year-round

    as a renewable resource.

  • Working in Washington, D.C., thanks to a

    federal engineering scholarship. Creating

a Faith and Justice Retreat. Planting an

orchard in an African village. Just a few

    ways Katherine DeGreef (13) integrates

    academics, faith and justice.

  • On average, 1,352 students each day during 2012-13 used resources

at the Foley Center Library including databases, e-books, full text

periodical articles delivered to your computer or smart phone. Those

are just the digital resources. Add 363,213 hard-copy books, DVDs,

microfiche, also interactions with librarians and staff through in-

person reference queries, online chat or texting and students

enjoy unlimited ways to gather, analyze and present information.

Now, reimagine Foley. Ever-changing technology will afford new

possibilities for collaborating on research. While well-written papers

will always be important, digital tools will encourage students to

express their ideas in videos, web sites and the latest in digital

media. This enriched, dynamic environment provides a perfect

setting for experiential learning and the discovery of knowledge

    across disciplinary lines.

    FOLEY CENTER LIBRARY REDESIGN

    Vision:

The Foley Center Library will provide a hybrid collection of the best

resources, whether print or electronic, and will offer the space,

services and digital tools that enable students to create new

    scholarship.

  • GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

    Within the next five years

    Gonzaga will be recognized

    as a leader in comprehensive

    internationalization.

5Global engagement is a two-way street. As we send our students

into the world, we must help them perceive the changes in their

own sense of self, just as the institution itself is transformed by on-

going engagement with the world. In the 2012-13 academic year

nearly 400 international students came to campus, and over 640

Gonzaga students studied abroad. With over 6,100 alumni, Gonzaga-

in-Florence, Gonzagas flagship study-abroad program, will celebrate

    its 50th anniversary in 2013-14.

    Vision:

Global engagement connects academic learning and lived experience,

building a critical perspective for students to engage people and the

world around them in mutually transformative exchanges.

Students must let the gritty reality of this world into their lives.

    Father Kolvenbach, S.J.

  • Zambian lecturers Lewis Chulu, left, Peggy

Chilema, right, along with 23 colleagues from

the Charles Lwanga College of Education spent

two weeks this summer on Gonzagas campus in

a customized masters program. Completion of

this two-year graduate study will give the faculty

of this Jesuit institution in Zambia the ability to

teach with modern methods and to award four-

year degrees. Its a great example of the kind

    of faith-based, international, higher-education

    collaboration at which Gonzaga excels.

    GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

  • 15 At Gonzaga, on average 42.6

    percent of each graduating class

    studies abroad. The national

average is just 1.4 percent. GU

ranked among the top 15 masters

    institutions sending students

    abroad to study for 2011-12.*

    * 2013 Open Doors: Report on International Educational Exchange, Institute of International Education, New York.

In 2012-13, students chose among 29 study-abroad programs,

including faculty-led summer programs as well as semester

exchanges and partnerships with top-ranked institutions around the

world. Destinations ranged from Italy and Zambia to China, South

America and elsewhere. Exchanges, as well as focused recruitment,

will bring more international students and scholars to campus.

    Vision:

The Center for Global Engagement will deepen our international

networks and outreach, while expanding the opportunities for faculty

and students to collaborate using technology blended with direct, in-

person collaboration to enhance the global competence of students,

    faculty and administration at Gonzaga.

  • 4,626 undergraduate students received scholarship aid from Gonzaga

in 2012-13. Total Gonzaga aid for the year surpassed $73 million. Yet

a significant need for greater scholarship funding remains. The need

stems from a still-lagging economy, federal and state cuts, and rising

costs of higher education. Nearly 20 percent of GU students received

Pell grants. Of those, 316 students are from families who can afford

    no tuition at all.

    Vision:

Gonzagas endowment totaled $173 million in 2012-13. A growing

endowment creates a steadying force. It allows the University to

provide more deserving students an exemplary Jesuit education with

a vibrant range of experiential learning. Thats a signature piece of the

    Gonzaga experience.

    STUDENTS AND FACULTY

    16Increasing the number of endowed

professorships from 16 to 60 will

help attract and retain brilliant and

    caring faculty. They improve the

    value of a Gonzaga education.

  • Economics major Kate

    Catlin (13) needed

    more than $100,000 in

    scholarship funding. Her

    accomplishments so far?

    She became a Rhodes

    scholar finalist. Two-time

    U.N. Climate Conference

    veteran. Member of

    Venture for America.

  • The top student in their department?

Gonzaga chemistry faculty agreed on one

choice: Matthew J. Smith (13). Next up

for this Fulbright and Hertz Fellowship

    candidate a doctorate from UC-Berkeley.

  • The sciences at Gonzaga are taught through inquiry and research. This

approach works. The demand in science majors has surged in recent

years; our 2012-13 figures show 662 science majors. Step into Hughes

Hall any time. Early in the morning or late at night, students not only

occupy laboratories, but fill them to capacity. Our short-term need? $1

    million to expand lab space.

    Vision:

However, the long-term answer to this demand includes building a new

interdisciplinary sciences center. Facilities are, of course, just one part of

the equation. What makes Gonzaga so distinctive is our commitment to

framing education as a transformative life journey. This is of the highest

priority in our newly launched School of Nursing and Human Physiology

    and all across campus.

    the incoming undergraduate

    students in fall 2012.

  • 48.4Ascending to No. 1 on the hardwood. Winning a conference champ-

ionship on the diamond. Making postseason history on the links and in

the water. Gonzaga athletics enjoyed unprecedented success in 2012-

    13. Now imagine the things our student-athletes could achieve with

full financial support. Gonzaga is 48.4 scholarships short of the 149.2

allowed by the NCAA for the Division I sports in which GU participates.

Closing this gap will put our athletic programs at a competitive

advantage within the West Coast Conference and nationally.

    Vision:

The growth and future success of Gonzaga student-athletes, on

and off the field of play, depends largely on a firm foundation of

endowed scholarships. Investing in this pillar helps our student-

athletes become leaders on the field, in the classroom and in life.

    992Gonzagas Academic Progress Report

    score, 992, ranked highest among

    West Coast Conference schools and

10 points higher than the average

in 2012-13. Six GU teams earned

    NCAA Public Recognition Awards for

    exceptional academic performance.
