REPORT ON WORLD SCIENCE DAY ACTIVITIES HELD AT ADEYEMI BERO AUDITORIUM ON MONDAY 18 TH OF NOVEMBER, 2019. THEME: OPEN SCIENCE, LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND ORGANISER LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT; (MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY) World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. The initiative is celebrated annually every 10 th November ensuring that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The programme which was held on the 18 th of November, 2019 served as a platform to mobilize all actors; from Government officials, the media to School Pupils and to strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies. The MD/CEO, Lagos Waste Management Authority Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegeshin felicitated with the Ministry of Science and Technology. He likewise implored Lagosians to join hands in ridding Lagos State of recyclable waste by sorting waste from source and placing them in the Purple Bags (Recyclable bag) as this recyclable waste could be reused and turned into wealth. LAWMA had a stand at the exhibition arena within the auditorium of which the A&E department and Recycling Unit were present at the venue of the programme (ADEYEMI BERO AUDITORIUM) to showcase what the present administration programme on solid waste management. Mrs. Bimpe Adeshina of Partnership desk, LAWMA, spoke extensively to the dignitaries and the attendees on the Blue Box Initiative launched by the Executive Governor of Lagos State Mr. Babatunde Olusola Sanwo-Olu on 5 th September, 2019 at Simpson, Transfer Loading Station. World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. The initiative is celebrated annually every 10th November ensuring that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. Some shop owners on Liasu road, Egbe said the operator has not been coming to cart their waste, they patronize cart pushers.

Street sweepers, residents and shop owners were sensitized on good solid waste management practice at Modupe Shitta street junction, in front of No 17 Liasu road, Egbe, Ikotun.

Street sweepers at Ikunna street junction, Liasu road, Egbe complained about a parked bus put up for sale by the road with contact number pasted on the bus causing hindrance for them to work effectively.

BLACKSPOTS No black spot was observed during the

monitoring exercise.

Residents/shop owners were sensitized on the need to keep their environment clean, sort waste from source as well as implications and unethical patronage of cart pushers.

The team called the number pasted on the bus but the line was not reachable.

ENROUTE

Aggreko Power Solution is a multi-level supplier of temporary power generation equipment based in Lagos who organized a Clean-up to extend its understanding customer service as a way to give back to the community. The HOD A&E Mr. Adewunmi Adetona sensitized Aggreko Power Solution staffs and all present on LAWMA activities, expectations and visions. He urged them to imbibe the culture of waste sorting at source by dropping all recyclable items in the purple bag provided and biodegradable/organic waste items in the black bags for effective sustainable solid waste management in ensuring a cleaner Lagos. The MD/CEO (Aggreko Power Solution) Mr. Kweku said his company used the occasion to encourage Lagosians and ensure a Cleaner, Healthier and Fresher environment. Passersby were sensitized and given trash bags for waste collection. Also in attendance;

ADVOCACY / CLEAN-UP FROM OBA-AKRAN AVENUE (GUINNESS NIGERIA PLC HEAD QUARTERS) THROUGH AKILO ROAD DOWN TO ACME ROAD, (GUINNESS NIGERIA PLC PLANT)

ON THURSDAY 21ST NOVEMBER, 2019. SustyVibes in partnership with employees of Guinness Nigeria and LAWMA carryout cleanup exercise to promote awareness on environmental issues and knowledge on recycling. The organization is focused on drawing awareness to environmental, climate and waste issues also, sustainable development and advocacy. Guinness Nigeria Plc is an iconic African company, renowned across the continent and internationally, partners with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to carryout cleanup exercise as a way of giving back to communities within which it operates. The HOD A&E Mr. Adewunmi Adetona sensitized SustyVibes volunteers, Guinness Nigeria Plc staffs and all present on LAWMA activities, expectations and visions. Garden and recyclable waste with other waste was seen by The Laundry Box fence on Wemco road, Off Agidingbi road, Opp Wacot Ltd, Ikeja.

Waste seen at Mechanic Empowerment bus-stop, Ikeja

Clean Clear ventures truck with spilled waste was seen parked on Amara-Olu Street, Off Agidingbi road, Ikeja.

Waste was seen on Industrial Avenue road, Off Acme road, Ikeja.

Pictures were taken.

The PSP operators assigned to cart waste within the mentioned areas were contacted on phone.

Operators within the mentioned areas need to improve on services rendered and cart the waste at various spot regularly.
