Over 100 policy makers and stakeholders of public health came together at the
first edition of Healthcare Sabha – The National Thought Leadership Forum on
Public Healthcare.The two-day conference saw an interdisciplinary group of
professionals working in public healthcare deliberate, discuss and debate on
cohesive, unified and innovative ways to achieve The National Health Mission of
providing ‘Universal Access to Equitable,Affordable and Quality Healthcare
Services.’Public health champions in India were also honoured at the
concurrently held Express Public Health Awards

The 1st edition of Healthcare Sabha began on an auspicious note with the
ceremonial lamp lighting ceremony by the Chief Guest, Navin Mittal, Secretary
Finance & Commissioner & Ex-Officio Secretary, Information & Public Relations
Dept, Govt of Telangana; and the Guests of Honour, Dr Henk Bekedam,WHO
Representative to India; Dr Srinath Reddy, President, Public Health Foundation of
India; Dr Kenneth Thorpe, Chairman, Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases and
Viveka Roychowdhury, Editor, Express Healthcare.

The event began with an address by
the Chief Guest, Navin Mittal,
Secretary Finance & Commissioner &
Ex-Officio Secretary, Information &
Public Relations Dept, Govt of
Telangana. He said,“ The two-day
conference would be a great
opportunity for the best brains in the
country and abroad to deliberate and
find solutions to a lot of issue that the
healthcare sector faces and create a
roadmap for the future.”
The first keynote of the Healthcare
Sabha 2016 was delivered by Dr Henk
Bekedam, (WHO) India
representative. His message to the
audience was,“Investing in health is
investing in India's growth”

Several thought provoking panel discussions and sessions were part of the event.
Industry experts deliberated on significant topics such as: Road map to achieve
UHC, Best practices in medicine procurement, Effective models on financing
healthcare, Effective implementation of PPPs in healthcare and Role of frugal
innovation in healthcare

Knowledge SessionsIn addition to the interactive panel discussions, Healthcare Sabha also saw
knowledge sessions from experts such as Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Director
General, Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr Damodar Bachani, Deputy
Commissioner (NCD), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India
and Dr Kenneth Thorpe, Chairman, Partnership for Chronic Diseases (PFCD)
Dr Soumya Swaminathan, highlighted the importance of evidence-backed public
health strategies while Dr Damodar Bachani spoke on the ‘Emerging threat of
lifestyle diseases and their risk factors – Where are we today and the way forward
to deal with NCDs as a public health priority. Dr Kenneth Thorpe highlighted that
NCDs have emerged as one of the major health concerns in India and there is an
urgent need to implement strategies which would help tackle these challenges
effectively.

The Express Public Health Awards sought to honour the visionaries, innovators,
and game changers from public healthcare.The Public Health Foundation of India,
was the Knowledge Partner and Glenmark was the Presenting Partner for the
awards. Dr Srinath Reddy,the Chairperson of the jury for Express Public Health Awards
explained the concept behind the awards.Dr Akun Sabharwal,Director,Drug Control
Administration,Telangana was the Chief Guest at Express Public Health Awards
