2005 REPORT OF ACTIVITIES “Recently, the Québec government announced that it intends to make mental health one of its priori- ties. We can only applaud such a decision. However, I’d like to paraphrase John F. Kennedy and say to you: ‘Ask not what your government can do to reduce the consequences of mental illness. Ask what you can do for those affected.” “I feel proud today when I look back on how far we have come and what has been accomplished by the Mental Illness Foundation since its creation in the fall of 1980. But what pleases me the most is to note the change in attitude that has taken place with regard to those affected by mental illness. If the Foundation exists today, it is not just because of me, it is thanks to all of you.” “Which of us, which of our friends or relatives can say that they’ll never be affected by some kind of mental illness or come into close contact with it? Mental illness does not discriminate. It can hap- pen to anyone. It can affect children as well as seniors, the haves as much as the have nots. It is not necessarily hereditary. It is not clearly associated with lifestyle.”

NOTHING WORKING? IN 2005 –DEVELOPMENT & PARTNERSHIP

PARTNERS FOR LIFE – SEVEN YEARS ALREADY!

In September 2005, Partners for Life embarked on its seventh year of touring Québec. The totally new team, composed of eight activity leaders and two team leaders, Geneviève Berteau-Lord and Catherine Burrows, had already met more than 20,000 students by the end of December. In total in 2005, 63,850 students as well as 2,795 parents and care providers benefited from the services of our team.

To better respond to requests from care providers and teenagers themselves, the presentation format has been modified a little to put the emphasis on what should be done if a student recognizes signs of depression in him or herself or a friend. Teens and care providers have enthusiastically welcomed these changes.

SINCE THE START OF THE PROGRAM:

• Meeting a grand total of 464,000 people, including: - 441,700 teens - 500 parents - 4,800 care providers• 503 schools, or 89% of the secondary schools solicited• 4,264 known cases, followed up and treated for a problem related to symptoms associated with depression• 629 known hospitalizations.

“We consider the Partners for Life tour an essential service for health and well-being, even for the safety of our young people. In our opinion, a program like yours is indispensable, and we hope it will be continued …”

ROBERT TESSIER Drug Prevention Educator

The year 2005 was devoted to development and partnership for the Nothing working? program.

Two new workshops for corporate managers were added to the program. The first covers personality disorders and the behaviour to adopt and practise as a manager. It suggests possible ways of intervening with an employee and indicates attitudes to be avoided. The second workshop deals with the role of managers in safeguarding the mental health of their employees. Its aim is to make them aware of certain aspects of their management practices in an organizational context that have an influence on the psychological health of their staff, as well as what are desirable interventions.

The addition of these new workshops means that the Nothing working? program can offer a wider range of training that better meets the needs of companies. In 2005, more than 60 companies welcomed Nothing working? trainers not just for one, but, in the majority of cases, for several training workshops/presentations.

The program also saw its credibility increase with the signing of important partnerships. The Ordre des CRHA et CRIA du Québec (ORHRI) (Québec order of Human Resources professionals) renewed its partnership with Nothing working? for a third consecutive mandate, while the Centre patronal de santé et sécurité du travail du Québec granted the program exclusive rights for their mental health training. These two associations thus recognize the relevance of the program in preventing mental illness in the workplace.

“Mental health problems are weakening the human capital of organizations and costing them more and more. The situation has to be corrected imme-diately. The ORHRI is convinced that the Mental Illness Foundation, through its Nothing working? program, has proposed an original solution for both workers and employers.”

SPECIAL EVENTS AND DIRECT-MAIL CAMPAIGNMARK A RECORD YEAR

From left to right: Jocelyne Cousineau, Honorary President of the 10th prestige wine-tasting event, Dr Yves Lamontagne, Founder, and President-Director General of the Collège des médecins du Québec, Jocelyne Monty, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, and Suzanne Dubois, Executive Director of the Foundation.

THE DOCSPOKE TO US OF LOVE

How better to begin celebrating the Foundation’s 25th anniversary than by “speaking of love” with none other than our Founding President, Dr. Yves Lamontagne. On St. Valentine’s Day, February 14, the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal resonated to the warm voice of Dr. Lamontagne, who interpreted more than 20 old favourite French and Québec songs for the occasion.

It was a wonderful evening for the 450 or so guests, lulled by Dr. Lamontagne speaking to them of love, and a financial success for the Mental Illness Foundation, which raised more than $100,000 thanks to the show, will go toward ensuring the continuity of the Partners for Life program. A huge Thank You to Dr. Yves Lamontagne for his generosity.

15TH EDITION OF THE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Almost 230 golf enthusiasts met up at the Elm Ridge Golf Club on Île Bizard on June 13, 2005, to take part in the 15th edition of the Foundation’s annual golf tournament. Under the honorary presidency of Roch L. Dubé, President & CEO, Bell Nordiq Inc., the tournament, silent and vocal auctions, helped the Foundation raise net funds of more than $147,000.

The arrival of Réal Bellemare, Senior Manager, Special Loans Group, RBC Royal Bank, brought fresh energy to the Organizing Committee, which showed extraordinary energy and enthusiasm.

The Foundation’s 25th anniversary year set a record for fundraising. The special events alone brought in net proceeds of nearly $315,000, while the direct-mail campaign to individuals and companies enjoyed unprecedented success, raising more than $134,000.

TO THE HEALTH OF THE FOUNDATION

Almost 300 guests raised a toast to the Foundation’s 25th anniversary at its 10th annual prestige wine-tasting event, held at Marché Bonsecours under the honorary presidency of Jocelyne Cousineau. The event garnered high praise from guests, some going so far as to say that it was the grandest and best of all ten wine-tastings to date.

The Pol Roger Brut champagne and the excellent Côte Rôtie 1992 La Landonne, E. Guigal, were particularly appreciated among the eight wines tasted. The wines were accompanied by specialty cheeses and exquisite hors d’oeuvres.

The event enabled the Foundation to raise net funds of more than $65,000.

SECOND EDITION OF EMOTIONS BALL

Committee of Honour for the 2005 Emotions BallSuzanne Dubois, Executive Director of the Foundation, Lyse Senécal, Director, Michèle Dionne, Honorary President, Dr. Yves Lamontagne, Founding President, Jocelyne Monty, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Francine G. Saint-Pierre and Mihaela Firsirotu, Ambassadresses.

In addition to the financial results, the evening was an opportunity to raise the awareness of the business community to what people with mental illness and their family experience. At the outset, Michèle Dionne, Honorary President of the Ball, caused the audience to reflect when she asked: “If you had to hire someone today, would you give the opportunity to reintegrate into the job market to someone recovering from cancer; someone recovering from a serious car accident; or someone recovering from a severe depression?”

The large-screen projection of testimonials from people who had lived with mental illness touched many. All, in their own way, aroused emotions among the audience when recounting their experience. Following the testimonials, several guests said they were quite moved and that they understood better what such people go through.

The Mental Illness Foundation would like to thank all those who, directly or indirectly, con-tributed to the success of this superb evening. We thank the participants for their support. We also thank the Ball’s Committee of Honour and the hundred or so ambassadresses of the Foundation for their hard work and commitment. Thanks also go to our financial partners, to our generous sponsors and donors, without whom the Emotions Ball would not have been possible.

Thank you to Guy Latraverse and his team, as well as to the guest artists who performed in the show. And thanks to all those who contributed to the videos presented. Finally, thank you to all our volunteers who helped us make this evening so spectacular.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Emotions Ball in 2007.

THE FOUNDATION’S FIRST MAJOR AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

First shot in the public interest message for TV.

TO REALLY “GET” DEPRESSION

During October and November 2005, the Mental Illness Foundation ran a vast campaign in several media to raise awareness about depression. The campaign, which was carried out in collaboration with, and through the great generosity of Arthur & Merlin Communication Agency and its President, Michel Proulx, represented a first for the organiza-tion in its 25-year existence. It included an 8-page insert in Le Soleil, La Presse and Le Droit, a pubic interest message in English and French for TV, a message for radio, 12 billboard panels, as well as publicity on well-known Internet portals. The aim was to convey a better understanding of what people suffering from depression experience and to change perceptions with regard to such people. As a bonus, it gave the Foundation new province-wide visibility.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED – THANKS!With an estimated commercial value of $350,000,

the campaign would not have been possible with-out the contribution of all the talented people who participated in its creation, realization, production and distribution.

We would like to thank Arthur & Merlin Communications Agency, Les films Sputnik, La Majeure studio, Diabolo, as well as all the actors,

musicians and technicians who graciously helped make this project a reality. Our thanks also go to the TV and radio stations affiliated with Astral Radio network for broadcasting the public inter-est message, as well as to Astral Media for post-ing the billboard panels.

The two visuals designed for billboards were also publicized on various prestigious Internet sites such as Sympatico, Cyberpresse and Infopresse, thanks to CloudRaker, a firm that specializes in computer design, and its President, Jean-Sébastien Monty. Internauts who clicked on one or other of the icons instantly jumped to the Foundation’s Website, which saw its number of visitors double in the space of two months. Again, thanks to CloudRaker, visitors could also listen to the pubic interest message on our site’s home page.

Comments we received about the campaign show that the objective was achieved: people with depression recognized themselves in the message and more people are now more aware of depres-sion. So, to all our collaborators, we say:
