Spring 2016

Dear Fellows & Members,

The first objective of the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong

is to promote for the public benefit the advancement of knowledge

in the field of Dental Surgery and its associated subjects.

What is knowledge? In our context, this means information,

know-how and wisdom.

In this age of electronic data over-flooding, the environment is

overwhelmed with useless misinformation. We have all

encountered patients presenting with self-conceived ideas obtained

from Google and dictating their own treatment plans. Technical procedures can be easily seen from

YouTube, Facebook, etc. These need to be filtered, and conceptualized before regarded as

information.

Even for the dental profession, explicit information is only referred to as know-what. A higher level

of tacit knowledge is sometimes referred to as know-how. After gathering the know-whats and

know-hows, experiences mature the knowledge with wisdom. That calls for the need of supervised

training.

Structured Specialist training pathway is but one way of refining our delivery of care to the

community through the tedious process of knowledge sharing, refining and accreditation. The role

of the College goes beyond the person-to-person delivery of knowledge.

President’s Message

The College is responsible for the management of knowledge. With the expertise from our own

eight specialties and general practice, the College is in the position to be a ‘Central Bank’ to manage

the dental knowledge - with a mission to create, share, store, refine and disseminate new knowledge.

Examinations and courses materials should be regarded as communal intellectual treasures under

continuous refinement. An organizational knowledge data bank should be gradually accumulated

and formalized. With the co-operation of the Hong Kong Dental Association, in fact this is being

done the direction of Membership in General Practice (MGD) training.

With such a prospective ‘Central Bank’ of knowledge, modular courses can be valued with credit

points. A “multiple-entries, multiple-exits” modular training format can cater for different level of

training demands.

In a parallel development, the College has ipso facto become the ‘Clearing House’ for CME/CPD

points. It goes beyond bean-counting. We calibrate and record the transactions and sharing of

knowledge. By setting and upholding the standard of allocated CME/CPD points to educational

activities, the dental profession is seen with a will to update our yesterday’s knowledge openly.

Knowledge is to be shared. Our professional knowledge is impacted by our predecessors and to be

handed over to our successors. It is something we shall all enjoy to share with our peers, our

organization and our community.

Happy Chinese New Year to Everyone!

Dr CHAN Sai-kwing

The Winter Scientific Meeting 2015 on “Digital Dentistry” was successfully held on 22nd November at

the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine with more than 280 participants. “Digital Dentistry” relates to

dental technologies or devices that incorporate digital or computerized components for controlling

workflow in dental practice. At this meeting, a total of seven local experts from diverse dental

backgrounds shared their experience on aspects of “digital dentistry” in the Hong Kong context, the

process and outcomes of digital dentistry, communications with dental manufacturers and dental

suppliers, and the research in this newly-emerged field.

The event was kicked off by Dr Alex Chan, a Specialist in Endodontics, on

the topic of “Endodontic Applications of Cone-Beam Computed

Tomography (CBCT)”. Dr Chan has been using digital radiography in the

field of Endodontics for a period of time and he shared his valuable

experience and cases during the lecture. He also illustrated how CBCT

allowed three-dimensional assessment of odontogenic and non-odontogenic

lesions, root canal morphology, revision treatment, root and alveolar

fractures, and resorptive lesions which would definitely be beneficial to our

patients during treatment planning stage. As the development of digital

dentistry offers many advantages in our treatment planning, Dr John Wu, a

Specialist in Orthodontics, followed by presenting a topic on “Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatment

Planning with Digital Technology”. Dr Wu discussed on the fundamental importance of treatment

planning in orthodontic treatment and shared with the audience the advantages and disadvantages of

applying digital technology in this aspect.

After the coffee break, two other local speakers broadened our scope on the

use of digital system for clinical workflow with topics “3D Printing – Is It a

Revolution or a White Elephant in Dentistry” by Dr James Chow and “Why

Use Digital Clinic Management System” by Dr Johnny Wong respectively.

Dr Chow brought us to understand the basic of 3D printing and the

possibilities as well as limitations of its application in dentistry, with

illustrations from the perspective of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

While we all knew that using digital approach would be the future for our

clinic management system in handling records, Dr Wong put the emphasis

on the circumstances we would encounter when using such system in our

Scientific Meetings

clinic since not many practitioners were willing to change and use digital records completely at this

moment. We were happy to have comments and feedback from the audience after these two

innovative and informative lectures.

In the afternoon sessions, two speakers, Mr Alwin Ngai, an experienced

dental technician, and Dr Daniel Fang, a Prosthodontist, spoke on digital

technology in Restorative Dentistry. They both have adopted digital

system in their dental laboratory / dental clinic workflow respectively for

many years. Mr Ngai spoke on the topic of “Inside a Digital Dental Lab”

illustrating the whole digital workflow process in a dental laboratory with

in-depth knowledge that tremendously helped many clinicians to learn the

know-hows in bringing the best out of the dental laboratory so to provide

clinical work of good quality for our patients. It is also very important to

incorporate a digital workflow in our dental clinic to complete the process of

digital use and Dr Fang presented the topic on “Digital Workflow in

Restorative Dentistry – Are You Ready for the Change”. He talked about

the advantages and disadvantages and more importantly his experience on

the use of different clinical tools in daily clinical practice for the digital

workflow. The audience, no matter whether they are looking for a change

to digital dentistry or already using it, found it very practical. We were happy to have Dr Wilson Lee,

an Orthodontist, to wrap up the day, by sharing his clinical practice in orthodontics using digital

technology, with topic “Myths and Facts of Invisible Orthodontic Appliance”. He shared his clinical

cases using digital workflow and showed how it helped give patient satisfaction with up-to-date

technology and high quality clinical work in orthodontic treatment which traditional approach might

not be able to offer.

The close of the 2015 Winter Scientific Meeting on “Digital Dentistry” probably leads us to start

thinking seriously on how we can adopt digital concept in our daily work which can predictably

improve our service to the patients. We are well aware that “Digital Dentistry” is the way forward in

modern dentistry and with its fast-changing nature, we may need to prepare ourselves to take steps out

of our comfort zone. We are looking forward to seeing you all in the 2016 Spring Scientific Meeting

on 15 May, with our tentative themes on “Special Care/Needs Dentistry” and “Implant Dentistry”.

HKAM Council Dinner with Distinguished Young Fellows

Since 2013, the Academy Council has initiated a dinner gathering with distinguished young fellows

from constituent Colleges so to recognize their achievements and give an opportunity for them to meet

and share their experiences with HKAM’s Council Members and distinguished young fellows of sister

Colleges.

Each College is invited to nominate 1 or 2 distinguished individuals who are (according to priority):

1. Young Fellows (who have obtained their fellowship within 5 years); or

2. Potential Fellows who are still trainees at the moment.

Thus, annually, the College Council invites each specialty board to make one nomination, if

any. Each specialty board can recommend an outstanding nominee who has contributed special

achievements in their specialty. Among all the nominees, the College Council will select one or two

Fellows/Trainees to attend the dinner.

In the past years, the following nominees had taken part in this meaningful occasion:-

1. Dr CHOI Wing Shan, Winnie (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), 2013

2. Dr HO King Lun, Dominic (Periodontology), 2013

3. Dr Wan Kong Yuk Annie (Prosthodontics), 2014

4. Dr TSE Chee Choong Micheal (Endodontics), 2015

Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF)

The aim of the Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF) is to encourage

Specialty Boards and the Committee in General Dentistry (CGD) to organize or conduct education

and training activities for trainees, fellows, members, and/or trainers.

This is a pilot fund of which application for the SETDF will be valid for two years, from April 2014

till March 2016, and a maximum accumulative amount of HKD30,000 will be allocated for each

specialty/CGD. So far, the Specialty Boards in Periodontology and Prosthodontics had organized

their first functions under this fund on 10 October 2014 and 3 July 2015 respectively.

Both specialty boards give positive feedback and view that the fund provides an opportunity to nurture

trainer-trainee relationship which is essential for building a stronger team of trainers as well as

encouraging trainees along the road to becoming a specialist.

Towards the close of the funding application, the College Council will look into the possibility of

extending the period of provision for the SETDF and will keep the Specialty Board/CGD Chairmen

updated.

CDSHK Scholarship

The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong Scholarship (“Scholarship”) has been set up to support

Fellows admitted in or after the year 2011 and higher trainees in our specialist training pathways to

participate in overseas training. Preference will be given to young Fellows, i.e. those who are

admitted within the previous 5 years.

The maximum amount of the Scholarship will be HK$50,000 for the year 2016. The training

programme will be self-arranged for duration of not more than 8 weeks and needs prior approval by

the College Council. The Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with any other award, grant or

sponsorship that will give financial support for the same training.

Successful applicants will be required to write reflections about their training which will be published

in the College Publication and they may be required to participate in some College activities in the

subsequent year, for example, representing the College in some promotion functions, etc.

Application forms and details of the Scholarship can be obtained at our website at <www.cdshk.org>.

Deadline for application will be 31 July 2016.
