3. ACTIVITIES OF

PORTFOLIO

1. Law Library Update

• In my last meeting with Melissa De Zwart (30th August), I

was informed of a few options the library management has proposed in response to our survey. I have been given a copy of the options and will present them verbally.

2. AULSS/AMSS Collaboration

• I met with a few Executive and Committee members from the

AMSS last Thursday to discuss the interfaculty sports event and after party. After re-evaluating, we’ve decided to push the sporting event until next year. We have each agreed to include some notes in our respective handovers so that it can be implemented in 2019!

EXECUTIVE REPORTS

COMMITTEE MEETING 8

• We will be focussing on the Suits and Scrubs social event and

will be working together on this. I’d like to create a little sub-committee (of current committee members) to assist in an ad hoc capacity with this event. If you are interested, drop me an email or message on Facebook.

3. ABSS Collaboration

• I would like to continue exploring the idea of a combined event

with the Business Students’ Society. We shared their Business Ball event and they shared our M&A Information Session and they have been doing some great work this year.

• I’m happy to reconsider a joint Closing Party event if the

committee and Activities Portfolio are also happy to. I can get in contact with Ali Amin to propose this idea and further discuss it!

4. Beyond Blue Initiative

• As mentioned at our last committee meeting, a law student got

in touch with me personally about the possibility of organising a fundraiser/awareness campaign about suicide prevention with Beyond Blue. We all agreed that this is a fantastic idea and an issue definitely worth addressing through the AULSS.

• I’ll get in contact with the interested law students over the mid-semester break and will get the ball rolling with our Social Justice Sub-Committee.

5. ALSA September Council

• The Executive and I discussed the possibility of sending a

representative to ALSA September Council being held in Perth during the mid-semester break. I am unable to attend due to our Law Dinner. My preference would be to send a committee member who is not in their final year so they can share what they gain at Council with other students.

• The council is being held in Perth which will involve a higher cost in terms of flights so this was considered when we decided to send one delegate. I will create a nomination form for interested committee members to fill-in and send back to me.

EXECUTIVE REPORTS

COMMITTEE MEETING 8

• The Executive will consider these nominations when choosing

a person to send. There are a few expectations in attending ALSA Council which I will make clear in the nomination form.

6. AULSS Election

• As per the AULSS Constitution, Melissa De Zwart and I have appointed a Returning Officer for the upcoming AULSS Election. James D’Alessandro will be this year’s Returning Officer.

• Melissa and I also discussed the idea of having a Faculty member available to assist with the election. She has emailed staff members to gauge interest. This person will also act as a scrutineer during the counting of votes.

• I apologise for not drafting the Election Rules earlier. It

was on my Week Six to do list but due to a personal reason, I was not able to dedicate adequate time to this. The proposed election rules will be circulated to the Committee by Sunday 6pm. This gives you 24 hours to read them. Thanks for your understanding.

7. Law Revue

• Another reminder that Law Revue is happening in Week Eight.

Great work by Nick Garbas and the Hilarian team in cross-promoting the event!

EDUCATION DATE 30 August 2018 REPORT BY Azaara Perakath

1. SUMMARY OF

REPORT

• Legal Research Seminar • GDLP Information & Networking Event • Electives Guide

2. UPCOMING EVENTS

• GDLP Networking Night • Electives Guide (ongoing)

3. ACTIVITIES OF

PORTFOLIO

1. Legal Research Seminar

• The Education Team held an additional (new) legal skills

seminar this year – a ‘Legal Research Seminar’ last week on Wednesday 29 August from 2-3 pm, in Ligertwood Room 112 (as no lecture theatres were available on room booking system).

• It was extremely well attended, with over 35 attendees from across all year levels

• The event seemed to be particularly timely, as a number of subjects (Corporate Law, PPL, Evidence) had upcoming research essays or group research projects – keep in mind for scheduling in future years if planning an event like this

• There were a number of first years in attendance – largely due to Cornelia Koch’s co-promotion of the event to her PPL students in the lead-up to their SGDE projects

• A big thank you to Mitch Brunker for co-presenting (read: undermining me) and Jasmin Teurlings for all her assistance with the promotion and running of the event

• We prepared Powerpoint slides (which we have now made available to all attendees) and also did practical demonstrations on the various databases, with attendees interjecting with questions whenever they wished to

• Given the level of interest for this seminar, might launch one or two trial ‘legal pop-up workshops’ towards the second half of the semester

EXECUTIVE REPORTS

COMMITTEE MEETING 8

2. GDLP Networking Event • Have contacted the relevant representatives from the

main GDLP providers (College of Law, University of Adelaide and Leo Cussen)

• Also contacted ANU since our last meeting, but have not heard back from them (which appears to be continuing the trend from last year)

• The event is scheduled for Wednesday 12 September (Week 8), 6-8 pm – as external representatives will be present, it would be great to have some committee members there if possible!

• Given the clash with the mooting grand finals, and the fact that the Law School were unwilling to host an event at which their competitors would be attending on Level 5 of Ligertwood, I had to opt for the next closest venue that would accommodate an event like this – ended up booking a large seminar space in Barr Smith South (Room 2051)

• It will be a chance for the GDLP providers to provide information about their respective programs and the general requirements for successful completion of the GDLP, and for attendees to ask questions / network

• Light refreshments will be provided – see attached budget

3. Electives Guide • To reiterate my gratitude from the Committee facebook

group, thank you so much to everyone on the Committee who has agreed to help the Education Team with write-ups for the forthcoming Electives Guide

• As of Thursday 30 August, we have allocated over 35 electives to various people and only have the following three outstanding:

o Australian Legal History o Aboriginal Peoples and the Law o Anti-discrimination and Equality Law

• Once we get all the material (estimated to be sometime in the next week), I will liaise with Rob as to the actual compilation and aesthetics of the final product.

On the 23rd of August we held our second Social Justice Breakfast at Public Café on Franklin Street. The breakfast was a great success with over 30 students and staff in attendance. I would like to acknowledge Erin Mack for her hard work in making the event the success that it was. The AULSS also gives thanks to our guest speaker Mandy Brown for providing for us a fantastic insight into some key indigenous affairs. The portfolio has now begun planning for our third and final Advocacy Campaign for the year as we start to look to issues surrounding asylum seekers.

We had the semi-final of the Novice Moot last Wednesday. It all went very smoothly. Thank you to Enzo Belperio for judging.

3. Grand Finals There is now a 2 week break for each moot before the Grand Finals. Both the GFs for the FYM and Novice Moot are on the same day (12 September). We have confirmed Chris Bleby SC, Simon Ower SC and Ashley Files to judge the grand final, which should be a great night! The FYM GF will start at 6pm, and the Novice Moot GF at 7:45pm. Please come along to support our moot grand finalists!

4. Mergers & Acquisitions Comp We will have had the oral advice round of the M&A competition by the time this meeting takes place. I will comment on that in the meeting. We had to rearrange the structure of the competition, so the semi-final round will not be on Thursday of Week 7 and the Grand final will be on Thursday of week 8. I would suggest in future years that a longer term structure be adopted (i.e. spread over a couple of weeks), as we found it incredibly difficult to source judges who were willing or able to give up time on a weekend. (Together, Mitch, Jack and I contacted professionals from over 10 firms and a number of other professional service firms, as well as academics and other contacts, and there were very few people who could help out). Everyone thinks it’s a great idea though, so it would be great to keep it going in the future.
