Report Card Published during the school year and mailed to the patrons of the district. Millwood School to be new Kindergarten Center The Washington State Legislature has designated funds to reduce class size for kindergarten through third grade beginning with the 2016-17 school year. Having fewer students in each class creates a need for additional class- room space. A committee of stakeholder representatives was formed in September to study the options for creating the necessary classroom space. After months of research, staff presentations, and a public forum, the committee completed their work and made a recommendation to the school board to repurpose Millwood Early Childhood Center into a dis- trict kindergarten center. The School Board voted unanimously to take advantage of the funding to reduce class size and repurpose Millwood to house the district kinder- garten students. Kindergarten students will attend the Millwood Kinder- garten Center at 8818 E. Grace beginning with the 2016-17 school year. After diligent research and extensive planning for the transition, an agreement has been reached with St. Paschal Parish to house the district Preschool programs in their vacant school building. Our youngest students will attend the West Valley Early Learning Center at 2523 Park Road beginning with the 2016-17 school year. . Truancy Board Honored The West Valley Community Truancy Board has been awarded the district Community Leadership award. For the past 10 years the award winning board has been helping truant youth in a successful, proactive and positive manner. The intervention from the board entails efforts to avoid formal adjudication and processing in the juvenile court system and provide resources needed to overcome barriers to school attendance and success. One of the boards greatest strengths is the combined participation of community resources which include school administrators, teachers, counselors, para-professionals, volunteers and community organizations/ agencies. The Truancy Board has been identified by WSU as a “Promising Practice” and has been replicated in numerous counties in Washington and 16 counties across the country. The annual event features free dinner, student performances and displays, robotics, kids crafts, door prizes, and much more. The thank you event was founded 15 years ago by school board directors and sponsored by local business donations and community engagement grants. STAR Program a shinning success

West Valley elementary students are reaping the

benefits of a new after-school program. STAR

(Students, Activities & Relationships) Club’s objective

is to provide a safe, fun, nurturing environment for

students. The free program is made possible by a

grant awarded to Millwood Community Presbyterian

Church from the Inland Northwest Community Foun-

dation. Volunteers run the Club and facilitate

breakout sessions which include homework area and

various activities. Special sessions include the Spo-

kane Library and their STEM Kit, the WV Robotics

team, Whitworth Basketball Clinic, paper making with

Inland Empire Paper Company, and responsible pet

ownership by SCRAPS. Organizers plan to partner

with Big Brothers Big Sisters to match mentors with

students. If you would like to volunteer with the

STAR Club, please call (509) 340-7204.

WVHS Band to New York

The WVHS Marching Band and Color Guard is one of only 15 bands selected to march in the 2016 Veteran’s Day parade in New York City. They will also partici-pate in The Band of Pride Tribute com-memorating the 15th anniversary of 9/11.

Above and Beyond Award

The district Above and Beyond Award was recently presented to community member and City School neighbor Julie Perrira and Custodian Duane Statler. The duo worked together to identify vandals who had been breaking windows at the school. District Security Officer Bill Peterson was also honored for the award for his role in the apprehension of the vandals.
