    Procedure for chess piece mold making

    1. /he chess piece is cleane# an# #rie# as any #irt present or *nsmooth s*rface will affect the

    s*rface finishing of the caste# oect.

    2. clay e# an# clay walls were ma#e from clays. /he clay e# is taller than the lie #own chess

     piece. /he chess piece was presse# ro*ghly halfway in the clay e#. /he interior cre%ices (hole at

     ottom chees piece) were co%ere# *sing remaining clay.

    . /he mol# parameter3 clay walls are ma#e taller than the height of the clay e# an# the chess

     piece. /he remaining clays were *se# to sec*re the e#ges of the wall to a%oi# lea-age when POP

    is po*re#.

    . few layers of mol# soap were sprea# all o%er the *pper s*rface of the clay e# *sing

     paintr*sh. /his will ser%e as non4stic- layers an# allow for easy remo%al of the chess piece.

    !. While waiting for the layers of the mol# soap #rie#3 a mi,t*re of plaster of Paris an# water is

    ma#e. i,ing owl is fille# ao*t 15 f*ll with water. /he plaster is a##e# gra#*ally to the water.

    /he plaster is a##e# to the water *ntil it no longer sin-s elow the water *t mo*n#s *p on top.

    /he mi,t*re is gently stirre# with a spoon *ntil it smooth an# creamy.

    '. /he mi,t*re then is po*re# into the clay walls *ntil it almost f*ll. 6f there any air *les3 spray

    water on the s*rface.$. /he plaster is left to sit for a goo# amo*nt of time *ntil it f*lly #ry.

    7. fter few ho*rs3 when the plaster is rea#y3 a sc*lpt*re -nife is *se# to c*t one corner of the tape#

    e#ge an# the clay walls are remo%e#. Caref*lly the clay e# is p*lle# to separate the chess piece

    from the plaster mol#.

    8. /he plaster is sintere# in the f*rnace *ntil it f*lly #ry.

    10. /he steps are repeate# for another half of the plaster mol#.

    Procedures for chess piece slip casting

    1. /he raw material9 -aolin3 all clay3 fel#spar3 silica were meas*re# accor#ing the meas*rement

    gi%en.

    2. ll the raw materials were mi,e# an# meas*re# its total weight. /he amo*nt of water is e*al to

    the total weight of the raw materials oeye# the ratio 1:1 an# separate# in #ifferent owls.

    . By *sing a mi,er3 little y little the raw materials were mi,e# with the water. fter all the raw

    material was p*t into the water3 the slip was eing mi,e# within 10 min*tes.

    . Before casting3 the mol#s are inspecte# for clay or #*st on the insi#e as it will affect the s*rface

    finishing of the caste# oect. /he #irt is cleane# from the mol#s with an air hose or a soft #ry

     r*sh. +e%er *se# water to clean3 it will #amage the mol#s.

    !. /he mol#s are tightly oine# together with r*er an#s.

    '. /he slip is stirre# efore casting an# chec-e# that it shall not contain air *les.$. /he slip was po*re# into the mol# slowly an# e%enly witho*t stopping an# splashing. /he slip

    sho*l# hit the ottom of the mol#s an# top *p the mol# e%ery few min*tes as the plaster starts to

    s*c- water from the slip an# a #enser layer of clay o#y is *ilt *p ne,t to the plaster.

    7. /he mol# is set *ntil the casting has reache# correct thic-ness.

    10. a-e s*re not to completely flipping the entire mol# o%er *t rather tilting it so that the slip

     po*re# o*t from one si#e of the mol#. /his allows for cleanliness an# ease of po*ring.

    11. fter all the e,cess slip was po*re# o*t the mol#3 the mol# was tilte# for a co*ple of min*tes to

    ens*re that e%ery last #rop of slip ha%e lea-e# o*t.

    12. /he mol# was tilte# to its si#e an# allowe# for #rying of the slip insi#e the mol#. Wait for 

    appro,imately 2 ho*rs efore releasing the mol#.1. Once the 2 ho*rs were #one3 remo%e# the caste# piece from the mol# y p*lling slightly on it.

    goo# cast sho*l# allow the piece to *st fall o*t. ;o not p*ll too har# as this may tear the piece. 6f 

    the piece was har# to remo%e3 wait for a few more min*tes efore trying again.
