Page 12: REPORT BALANCE - Lincolnshire Co-operative

iThe duties devolving upon us yearly become more arduous, and iu their faithful discharge we need the earnest support of themembers, ss well ss their thorough confidence: in the future even more so than in the psst. We do not look on the immediate ad-vantages of our Society to its members, iu increasing their incomes, as the sole reason for joining us, but we look ou Co-operation ass means by whish the mass of the population may accumulate capital without feeling burdened by the process, since the saving ismade out of what, if they did not lay by for themselves they must pay to some one else. Our main object will be to make the re-serves of the Society stmng, so that it may do its work better as its growing importance becomes more marked. We speak thusbecause it is plain to us that the rapidly increasing surplus capital will demand our best judgment to dispose of it profitsbly to theSociety. Hitherto we have successfully planted Branch Stores iu districts where they were needed, and this hss been a profitableoutlet for our Capital, because nearly all these businesses sre carried on in Freehold Properties, purchased with money lying idle at thetime of their purchase. B further extension in this direction be needed in any neighbourhood, members sre requested to take steps in sbody, to bring such want before us, when it shall receive our best attention, and a Branch shall be opened if we consider the require-ments of the members snd the interest of the Society wifi be best met by taking such a course. We should all bear in mind that s BranchStore, ss well ss being s great convenience to existing members, always causes en increase of membership, end that the Co-operativemovement, is above all things, wide-reaching snd universal in its sympathies. Let each of us therefore, whether in otfice or out of oifiee,do our best to perfect and extend our organization and not shut ourselves up and wrap the mantle of selfishness about us because weazedoing well. Let us beware of anything whish msy tend to narrow the Society down to individualism, for this is against the vezy prhteiples under which we sre incorporated; —against our old and well-tried mottoes; —snd this alone has menaced the very existence ofSocieties greater snd more powerful than our own.

Purchases made st Co-operative Wholesale Society: Grocery 91820, Drapery 8129, Shoes $677, Tailoring 868. Total 8 2689.
