The Aeronautical Engineering Department, MVJCE, organized an event Drone GP on2nd March
2019, at theNational Level Technical Fest, VerTechX 9.0, held at MVJCE. The event was held at
the Football Ground of MVJCE.
The competition was about testing the flight characteristics and piloting expertise of the
participants. The competition consisted of 3 rounds. Round One was a qualifier, at which the
Drone/ Quadcopter was inspected by the judges. And a brief technical report required to be
submitted at the venue during registrations, was verified. The first round did not carry any scores;
scores were awarded only to the performance at the second and third rounds, and were considered
to determine the winners.
RoundsTwo and Three involved obstacle avoidance and maneuvering flight display, with
thelevels of difficulty increasing as the teams progressed towards Round Three. Each round carried
a maximum of 100 points, and the event was totally evaluated out of 200 points. In Round Two
there were 5 sets of vertical poles, high pass maneuver and 4 sets of hurdles, low pass maneuver.
Totally, there were 9 obstacles. 10 points were awarded for successful crossing of each obstacle
and 5 points each was counted for perfect take-off and landing from and at the designated zone
marked on the ground.
The third and final round consisted of more intricate obstacles. The obstacles were elevated
hoops/ loops, kept in such a position as to check the piloting skills of the drone pilot. As three of
the participants were using mini drone of frame dimension of about 250 mm diameter, necessary
modifications were made to reduce the diameter of the loop, to keep a fair competition. This
round had 5 separate sections of obstacles, each were evaluated for 25, 15, 15,25 and 10
respectively. As in the previous round, the take-off and landing were evaluated for 5 points each.
In order to discourage skipping of obstacles, there was negative markingin both the rounds. In the
second round, if any obstacle was missed/ skipped,it would be penalized with a negative marking
of 2 points. In the third round the negative marking was 2 points for sections 1-3, 3 points for
