    Introduction

Steeltech Industries Ltd. (SIL) is located in Gazipur, Dhaka (Bangladesh) and is the largest Stainless Steel

(SS) Pipe manufacturer in Bangladesh. SIL currently holds fifty percent of the market share. It has a

factory of 40,000 square feet equipped to manufacture formed sanitary, pharmaceutical and value-

added engineered products. Copper bars, pipes and tubes (which are mostly used as electricalcomponents) and various rubber products (conveyor belts and rice rollers) for major industries (cement

    factories, rice mills, etc.).

    Product Review

Round pipes Half Circle pipes Rectangular pipes Square/ Box pipes These pipes generally come in the following sizes: 1, 2, 4 and 8.

    Process layout

SS pipes of varying sizes as well designed pipes. This implies the presence of batch process where

reasonable varieties are achieved by changing dices providing flexibility in production and also much

customized production for specially ordered designed pipes Therefore process flexibility is moderate.

The presence of specialized machines makes the whole production more standardized because the

equipment used is large and rigid. These characteristics are inherent in repetitive processing. The

machineries used are geared to achieve large economies of scale. In addition, the labour skills used are

fairly low with the exception of one or two workstations with moderate skill requirement.

    Facilities layout

The layout used for the production of SS pipes is a mixed layout. This is a mixed layout because of a

combination of product and process layout.

Dices of different sizes are placed according to desired pipe size in the forming section; whereas for

producing designed pipes, the produced round pipes are sent to a section specially meant for producing

designed pipes where there is large number of dices for crafting designs on the round pipes according to

    customers orders.

The pipe manufacturing line resembles an assembly line with slight flexibility of equipment. Other than

uncoiling machines being able to take different size of coil strips and the installation of different pipe

size of dices in the forming section rest of the stages are repetitive in nature. These machines aid in

producing large quantities of standardized good. This makes the process economical in nature. On the

other hand, the presence of large machineries makes the system very rigid.
