Neither all-steel or solid rubber rollers provide the top performance required of modern day folding

machines. Steel has a problem gripping coated stocks, even with the addition of roller tape. Rubber

has a shorter life and tends to harden with age, becoming even more susceptible to ink build up.

Polyurethane is tougher and more durable than rubber. It also grips better. But urethane is obviously

not as hard and enduring as steel.

Efforts by some manufacturers to add to the gripping power of the solid urethane roller through the

addition of ribbing only compounds the problem. Ribbing diminishes the surface area of the roller by

as much as one-half, thereby halving the working life of the roller. Moreover, ribbing crevices tend to

accumulate paper dust and offset powder and aggravate cleaning problems.
