INTRODUCCIÓN

Magsafe cables are known to break off close to the connector. This article explains how to dismantlethe magsafe and re-connect the cable to it.

Paso 1 — Repairing MagSafe Connector

Open the jaws of the vice so themetal shell of the magsafe just fitsbetween them. Place the magsafebetween the jaws with the cableupwards and the white plastichousing resting on the jaws.

Cut off the cable as close to thehousing as possible.

Use a cross-head screwdriver toforce the metal section of themagsafe out of the plastic housing

Gently prise apart the strain reliefmetal band around the remains ofthe cable and put it aside for later.

Cut down one side of the soft plasticinner and peel it away from the wiresand circuit board. You are veryunlikely to be able to re-use it sodon't worry if it tears.

The image shows roughly what youshould now have. The braid issoldered to two places (one on eachsite of the circuit board at oppositeends - middle and right in thepicture); the white core is soldered injust one (left in the picture).

Paso 2

Unsolder the braids and core from both sides of the circuit board.

Paso 3

Cut back 15mm of sleeve from thecable.

Peel back the braid

Tease out the fibres that arecontained within the braid

Split the braid in to two equal partsand twist together.

Paso 4

You will probably want three strips ofheatshrink. They will need to fit overeach other shrunk in place so likelyneed to be different sizes.

Cut the smallest diameter sleeve to2cm long. Once shrunk into placethe white plastic outer will need to fitover this. You might wish to checkthat this will work, as otherwise youwill need to enlarge the hole in thehousing (now, not later!).

Cut the others a little longer eache.g. 2.5cm and 3cm.

Slide the largest diameter heatshrinkover the cable.

Slide on the next largest size

Push the remains of the strain reliefout of the white plastic outerhousing. Now slide on the plasticouter part of the magsafe connector.Make sure that you get it the rightway round!

Finally, slide on the smallest pieceof heatshrink.

Paso 5

Peel back the braid

Tease out the fibres that arecontained within the braid and thencut them off as close to the cable aspossible.

Split the braid in to two equal parts.Twist each part separately to maketwo neat wires.

Strip back 3mm of insulation fromthe inner core. Twist the core byhand and then tin the end.

Paso 6

Solder the core on to the oppositeside to the chip (in the oppositecorner).

Cut two pieces of the smallestheatshrink - roughly 4mm long.

Slide on to the braid leaving roughly3mm of braid free at the end whereit joins the cable.

Shrink in to place. If your heat gun isa bit powerful, use the soldering ironto supply the heat.

Cut off the braids leaving about 3mmfree beyond the heatshrink.

Solder the first braid on to the chipside in the opposite corner to thechip.

Paso 7

Make sure that the cable comes offthe centre of the circuit board so thehousing will fit over it.

Also check that there is about 3mmof stripped cable on top of the circuitboard as the strain relief has to fithere (see next photo)

Solder the other braid on the otherside, in the opposite corner to thecore. Try not to extend beyond theedge of the circuit board

Carefully file off any solder or cablethat extends beyond the end of thecircuit board.

Paso 8

Reattach the strain relief. It needs tofit under the two lugs on the circuitboard above the solder points for thebraid and core.

This is just visible on the left handside of the core in the picture. Theright hand tab is a bit short of the tabon the right because I didn't get thecable decently centred!

Paso 9

Slide down the first bit of heatshrinkand shrink down.

(You can see the right hand side ofthe strain relief is short of the tab inthis picture.

I have since found (and others too)that the heatshrink doesn't stay inplace that well and so is not so greatas strain relief. More in step 10.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Paso 10

Slide the housing back over themagsafe connector. It goes on eitherway round (there is a hole for the ledon both sides.

Squeeze in place with the pliers. If itdoesn't fit over the circuit board fairlyeasily, check that you don't need tofile down the solder joints somemore.

Slide the first of the pieces ofheatsink up against the plastichousing.

Keeping it tight, shrink it in place. This is important to help avoid afuture failure.

Repeat with the outermost piece ofheatshrink.

Try powering it up! Remember that itwill take a few seconds before theLED illuminates.

Orange light - success!

Abrading the top of the casing andapplying a big blob of hot-melt glueseemed to provide more permanent,if less elegant, strain relief!
