Repak Update

Welcome to this edition of the Repak Update.

Throughout the year this short magazine gives Repak members and stakeholders the latest news from Repak, the inside track on new developments in packaging, and information on upcoming Repak events.

This edition provides information on the latest members survey and on recent changes to the member scheme rules. There is a feature on the Pakman awards which were held in Dublin last month and there is also information on Recreate and the Smurfit Packaging Audit; two services which Repak members may find useful.

If there are any issues or topics that you would like to see raised in future editions, or if you wish to supply any content, please contact the Repak Membership Services Department at the email address below.

In mid-2015, Repak carried out an omnibus survey of members across a number of key areas.

The main findings were:• Overall satisfaction with Repak membership

was positive;• There was a certain lack of clarity of the Repak

value proposition in some sectors. This was more prevalent among smaller members in areas such as the hospitality and the independent retail sectors;

• Many members had not fully picked up on messages in relation to Ireland’s strong recycling performance and Repak’s comparative low cost charges compared to other EU countries;

• Most members were clear on the information relating to fees charged, even if the system is somewhat technical;

• Member communications were generally considered to be good and to the point with targeted letter / email the favoured method. There was little support for the Members Conference;

• There was broad support for the key Repak membership value proposition, with sizeable majorities regarding the Repak fee charging system to be broadly equitable;

• The overall producer responsibility system for packaging recycling is working well.

Repak has been working hard to ensure that the responses received from members are fully incorporated into Repak’s ongoing communications and relationships with all stakeholders.

The Repak Board recently approved some amendments to the Members Scheme Rules. The rules constitute the basic contract between Repak and its members, and need to be updated from time to time to take account of issues such as changes to the legislation and other practices relating to membership. The last such changes took effect from 1 July 2014.

The amendments took account of the following:

• Changes to legislation – Companies Act 2014, Data Protection legislation, European Union (Packaging) Regulations 2014;

• Revised Repak Corporate Governance structure – provision for AGM, Member Directors, Board elections etc

• Provision for fee rebate to members• Provision for changes to Scheme Rules and

period of notice to members.

The new Scheme Rules became effective from 1 October 2015. They can be viewed on the Repak website: https://www.repak.ie/for-business/members-area/

Copies are also available directly from Repak

Allied Irish Bank (AIB) were the big winners at the inaugural Pakman awards in the Shelbourne Hotel last month, scooping the 2015 Pakman award for their outstanding work in recycling, energy and waste management. Leading the congratulations among 300 representatives from leading businesses, organisations and community groups was Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly TD: “The Pakman awards are an excellent example of organisations in the recycling and waste management industry coming together with a common purpose to highlight and reward best practice initiatives and excellence across a number of waste streams”.

The Pakman award, which has replaced the Repak Member of the year award, seeks to recognise complete excellence in the environmental approach taken by a business, organisation or community group in all aspects of their operations. AIB demonstrated best in class practices across a number of green initiatives including waste recycling, water, energy, transport management and a bio diversity partnership with Boyne Valley Honey to install the first corporate roof-top apiary in Ireland.

Among the other winners were Lidl Ireland, whose efforts in working closely with their waste service providers to achieve zero waste to landfill earned them the Retail Recycling Champion Award. Currently between 75%-80% of Lidl’s waste is diverted away from landfill and over the past 6 months a huge effort has been made by the retailer to further reduce their waste and increase levels of recycling in all areas.

The Sandymount Hotel secured the Waste Prevention Business award for their integrated waste management and prevention programme, while the town of Ballycanew in Wexford was awarded the Community Recycling Project of the year award for their efforts in the Tidy Towns competition.

Family run waste management company Dillion Waste was awarded the Waste Collector of the year award (small) while Panda, Ireland’s largest waste collection operation, was selected as the Waste Collector of the year (large). Panda offers services to 150,000 households and over 16,000 commercial businesses throughout Ireland. Family run McElvaney’s Waste and Recycling were awarded the Bring Centre of the year.

cReative Reuse with RecReate iReland

Repak is this year celebrating 18 years of packaging recycling success in Ireland. This is founded on the consistent commitment of its 2120 members, who are now responsible for funding the recycling of 800,000 of packaging, which they place on the market, ensuring consumers are now recycling more than ever before. Irish businesses have invested over €350 million through Repak in ensuring that their packaging does not go to waste.

ReCreates members pay a nominal subscription fee and in turn have unlimited access to the materials stored in ReCreate’s Warehouse of Wonders (WOW) in Ballymount in Dublin 12.

ReCreate’s vision is to make art materials affordable and accessible to the whole community, inspiring curiosity, creativity and care for the environment.

ReCreate aims to:

• Divert materials from landfill and raise environmental awareness around reuse.• Provide accessible and affordable art materials and educational supplies to all.• Facilitate social inclusion and social gain particularly in areas of disadvantage.• Provide quality work experience opportunities for those most distant from the labour market.

What ReCreate offers, in particular for young children, is the opportunity to work and play with high quality open ended materials, this has a very positive impact on their developing brain because all aspects of a child’s development are interconnected. Now just over 18 months old, ReCreate has been welcomed with open arms by schools, crèches and community groups across Ireland with just under 1,000 members signed up to date. The overwhelmingly positive feedback is testimony to the Creative Reuse concept and its benefits. ReCreate also facilitated over 150 workshops in schools and other venues across Ireland throughout 2015 so far and hope to build on this further in 2016.
