Kamiloiki Elementary Receives

$51k from American Savings Bank

It is hard to believe that just one year ago Kamiloiki Elemen-

tary was on the verge of closing. We fought hard to keep a

high performing school open in East Honolulu—and won.

Fast forward to today. The amazing efforts of the PTSA, stu-

dents, faculty, and staff of Kamiloiki won them a check for

$51k from American Savings Bank! A great gift to help sup-

port our students’ education. I commend the level of effort

everyone in the Kamiloiki Elementary family puts into a qual-

ity education for our keiki.

Aloha Friends,

I am happy to report that the budget amendment

I supported for Aina Haina Elementary will be

released. The funds will provide the following:

A new fence at the back of the school adding

more security.

Plan, design, and construction for a

new parking lot on campus.

Design and construction to wire the school

with broadband internet and to install a wire-

less internet system.

A new public address system in the cafeteria.

I also secured funds for Kalani High School.

These funds will provide:

Planning and design for the first phase of a

girl's locker room and shower facility per Ti-

tle IX requirements.

Ground and site improvements, new athletic

equipment, and other miscellaneous athletic

equipment.

Security screens and stairwell gates for 10

stairwells to deter vandalism, theft, and tres-

passing on the second floor classrooms.

When I joined the legislature in 2010, it was my

goal to work with constituents and fellow legis-

lators to bring improvements to East Honolulu.

It is a joy to see our progress together.

Mahalo,

Thanks to all of you for your correspondence. Your

Beginning in July/August, the City and County of

Honolulu will begin removing underground bypass

piping as shown on the map. The project is scheduled

to end in Jan/Feb 2013. The project will remove 680

feet of sewer pipe that was initially installed in 2005.

Many residents may remember the black above-

ground bypass piping on Kalanianaole Highway be-

tween Puuikena St. and Niuiki Circle. The pipes

scheduled to be removed are the underground compo-

nents of that same emergency project.

The piping will be removed to allow easier main-

tenance of the roads in the future. This projects comes

at just the right time as Rep. Hashem worked to have

Kalanianaole Highway repaved in 2013. Expect traf-

fic control and pedestrian detouring during the day

and evening. For more construction and traffic con-

trol information contact Raj Rath at 768-8767.
