    Renowned Author and Broadcaster David Barsamian Speaks in Vancouver

    Vancouver, B.C. November 20, 2012. The CounterCulture Speaker Series is proud toannounce an upcoming talk with renowned journalist, broadcaster, and activist David Barsamian

    taking place November 30, 2012 at SFUs Harbour Centre Campus (515 W. Hastings St.)

    beginning at 6:30PM.

    Barsamian is well known for his best-selling collaborations with famed intellectuals including

    Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Edward Said. His latest is Occupy the Economy:

    Challenging Capitalism with radical University of Massachusetts economist Richard Wolff. In

    his Vancouver talk, Barsamian will offer attendees a critical look at economic crises in achanging world, and speculate on how we might act to prevent future collapses.

    Outside of his writing, Barsamian the award-winning founder and director ofAlternative Radio,an independent, internationally-syndicated, talk radio program now in its 26 th year. Alternative

    Radio can be heard regularly here in Vancouver on Coop Radio (CFRO) 100.5FM

    His commitment to showcasing prominent progressive and humanitarian thinkers has garneredwide-spread acclaim. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten

    Media Heroes. In addition, he is the winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU's Upton

    Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the

    Lannan Foundation.This free event will be held on Friday, November 30, 2012 at the SFU Harbour Centre Campus

    CounterCulture will help to create a significant presence for non-commercial alternative,independent, and democratic media in Canada.

    The Media Democracy Project is a group of people from both academic and activist communities

    who are committed to democratizing the media. We believe that the media are central to thequestion of democracy for at least three reasons: (i) they are a significant source of political and

    cultural information for Canadians, (ii) they make some perspectives or messages part of the

    public discourse and neglect or omit others, and, (iii) they are owned by large corporate

    conglomerates, who wield significant political and economic power. Our project is to promotedemocracy of the media system itself and through the media, and to do so we focus on three

    principles, as identified in our tag line:
